Flea Market

Summer is upon us! That means sun, fun, and everyone’s favorite, outdoor flea markets and yard sales. You heard it here — yard sales and flea markets are officially back, and they’re usually great places to score great items on the cheap. That is, if you know where to look, and what to look for.

The best part is, you don’t even have to be all that crafty to give new life to yard sale and flea market finds. Often, all that’s required is some elbow grease, basic tools and equipment, a lick of paint, and your own creativity.

The first step to becoming a bona fide yard sale maven is to keep your expectations realistic. Chances are you aren’t going to find brand new items in mint (or even near mint), condition. And that’s okay! After all, one of the best parts of flea market forays is finding a hidden gem among the rubbish that calls out to you, even if it needs a little work.

The following guide will give you some tips and tricks to finding, repurposing, and ultimately transforming vintage yard sale finds into fun new decor for your space.

Know What to Look For

Man examines wares at his local flea market.

While it’s always fun to peruse items at a flea market, sometimes it can be overwhelming if you don’t quite know what you’re looking for. Thinking a bit about what you need or want before going in can help to keep you focused and prevent you from falling down a rabbit hole of useless, frivolous junk.

Another helpful tip for yard sale and flea market browsing is to know what you’re willing to spend and sticking to it. While genuine antiques are (sometimes) worth the splurge, chances are if it’s at a flea market, it shouldn’t have too high of a price tag. Knowing when (and how) to haggle also comes in handy in these situations, as sellers are often amenable to negotiating. After all, you’re looking for bargains here. Know when to walk away if the price is too high, and when to shell out a few extra bucks when you stumble across something you really love.

Change It Up

When is a milk crate not a milk crate? When it’s holding all your vintage vinyls, of course! Which reminds us, yard sales and flea markets are often great places to scope out cheap records, too, so keep your eyes peeled!

One of the cardinal rules of yard sale-ing is to not be limited by an object’s form or function. This is where that good old-fashioned creativity comes in handy. Below are some great ideas to get you started:

Repurposing a vintage flea market find is a great way to elevate your decor and create a conversation piece that makes a splash. Furniture is always a good place to start, especially if you’re handy with tools and have an eye for design. For example, take another look at a second-hand bureau or vanity. With a bit of paint and some creative detailing, you could easily turn it into a desk or handy crafting workspace.

Need some additional storage? Yard sales can be gold mines when it comes to recycling or reusing vintage storage pieces, such as fruit boxes, crates, and even suitcases. Creative storage solutions never go out of style, and a little ingenuity and small touches such as a hint of color or bright fabric can turn even the most basic items into conversation pieces.

Be sure not to overlook smaller pieces such as vintage tins or teacups. Even the smallest items can add a pop of color to a room or become useful storage containers. Vintage tins make desktop and countertop organizing a snap, and the best part is, they’ll last forever with a little TLC.

Decoration Inspiration

Little things often elevate vintage finds into something special. If you are looking to incorporate some new design elements into your space without breaking the bank, then flea markets are the ideal place to find some flair. Here are some of our best ideas for turning that vintage find into an eye-catching accent that’s sure to add pizzazz to your home:

Wall Art

We’re not talking about dogs playing poker here (but if that’s what you’re into, that’s okay, too!) We’re talking about vintage posters, ads, or even magazines that can be framed and turned into your next piece of wall art. Choose simple frames that accentuate the theme or design of the pic for a colorful and stylish addition to any room. The best part is, you can often find frames at flea markets, too!

Textiles/Fabrics

Finding fabrics is a bit more difficult because they’re sometimes not in the best condition. Still, with just a little cleaning and a few sewing skills, you may be able to salvage some fabrics for creative repurposing. Elevate basic pillows with a vintage fabric, or use a colorful silk scarf to add a bit of color. Fabrics can also come in handy when you’re looking to reupholster sofa cushions or create custom chair covers. And be sure to keep your eyes peeled for rugs or floor mats, as these can also be cleaned up and given new life.

Lighting

Light up the room with a new shade, a cleverly-shaped lamp base, or a hanging fixture with industrial flair. While you may not be able to find a fixture that is in perfect working order, it is possible to salvage parts and even have lamps rewired by a professional, if necessary. Vintage lamps are heavily sought after, yet plentiful, so look for deals on colorful bases or shades with unique shapes or styles to take your lighting to the next level.

Plant Life

Looking to add a bit of greenery to your space, but want to go beyond your basic potted plant? Flea markets are a treasure trove for those looking for creative planting solutions, as even items that may no longer work as intended can house your next perfect plant. For example, defunct clocks can be transformed into herbaceous homes just by removing their tops or fronts, while egg cups and coffee mugs can also find new purpose as pretty planters.

Not sure where to find a flea market or yard sale in your area? Thrift stores and charity shops can also be havens for vintage bargain buys. Just remember that it’s going to take patience and a little work to find what you’re looking for, but it’s usually worth it. If you run out of ideas, sites like Pinterest and Etsy are always full of design inspo to steer you in the right direction. So get out there and discover your new fave flea market find today!
