There are dozens of natural ways to scent your home. Luckily, they are all quite simple and budget friendly as well. Almost everything in this article can be achieved with a few essential oils and everyday household items.
First, Absorb Odor
Put an open box of baking soda in your refrigerator, and in cabinets, shelves, closets or anywhere that needs a scent makeover. Place a bowl of vinegar in a room and just let it sit. Soon the vinegar will absorb other odors. Throw away after a couple of hours. After you have absorbed the unwanted odors, you are ready to replace with good ones.
Simmering Water
One of the easiest ways to freshen your kitchen area is by simply adding fragrant household items to a simmering pot of water. Try orange peels, vanilla or almond extract, allspice and cloves or any mixture of the above. The aroma is noticeable and lasting.
You can also add drops of essential oils to simmering water. Eucalyptus, peppermint, orange, lavender, cinnamon and vanilla are popular.
Cotton Balls
To freshen a bathroom and leave it smelling spa-like, you can simply dip cotton balls into essential oils and put them in an empty plastic container with a few holes poked in the lid. You can hide them anywhere. Eucalyptus, lavender, and ylang ylang are especially nice in the bathroom.
Cardboard Tubes
Dab essential oils on the cardboard tube of your paper towels in the kitchen or toilet paper in the bathroom. Every time someone gets paper, scent will be released.
Light Bulbs
Another trick for scenting your home is to dab essential oils onto your light bulbs. Do it when the lights are not on. When you turn them on, the heat will release the aroma of the oils.
Fragrant Plants
There are several plants that scent a room just by existing. Think lavender, eucalyptus, lemongrass, rose, cinnamon, thyme, basil and rosemary. Put them everywhere and you won’t even have to think about freshening. You can dry the leaves from the plants as well and put them in bowls as a home made potpourri, or put them in fabric bags to stash wherever needs freshening.
Flowers
Any flowering plant or fresh cut flowers will add fragrance to your home. Try placing them by an open window or a vent or fan to waft the scent even further.
Spray Bottles
Add water, baking soda and some essential oils (you can’t really mess up the ratios) to a spray bottle. Spritz anywhere that needs freshening.
Garbage Disposal
Grind orange or lemon peel in the garbage disposal. Be sure to use water! The kitchen will be instantly energized.
Vacuum
Put a small amount of baking soda or squeeze some lemon or lime juice into your vacuum bag before vacuuming.
The possibilities are endless. Be creative and in no time, you will have a home filled with scents that are pleasing to you.
