Portable Air Conditioner Installation: 3 Safety Tips

Staff Writer · Jan 31, 2011

Many people have ended up hurt due to mistakes during portable air conditioner installation. Whether the harm is done during the process or long afterwards, some forward thinking can prevent damage.

1. Read the Instructions

Many people choose to ignore instructions when installing household items. Normally, this would not be a problem. However, note that your air conditioner is a piece of heavy machinery that draws a lot of electrical power. This is one manual that you should at least skim.  Usually you will find a page that explains what the safest way is to feed power to your unit.  Understanding the electricity behind this machine will not only avoid the relatively slim chance of electrocution in the near future, but also a potential electric fire in the more distant future. There are plenty of other safety tips that can be found in the paperwork that comes with the unit.

2. Use Two People

Though by definition these units are portable, they are still very heavy. There are plenty of tragic things that can happen if you overestimate your strength. Of course, it is possible to lift it solo. However, note that the installation process will require some precise placements of the machine. Once you lift the unit into the window sill, you still need to keep it there while you secure it. Therefore, it is best to get help during the installation process.

3. Think about Household Security

When you are deciding where to put your air conditioner, you will probably be looking for the most strategic window for cooling the room.  However, you should also note that air conditioners are notoriously an excellent point of entry for robbers.  If you have a window that is higher off the ground than others, intruders will have to increase their own height to take advantage of such an opportunity. If such a window does not exist, then be sure to use the hardware provided with your air conditioner in order to attach it to the window. Many windows are made of metal so you may need to invest in a new drill bit in order to protect your property. The solution will vary with each apartment, but this is not an issue that you should overlook.

Summer in the city makes air conditioning an important part of life. Though heat may cause the need to feel extremely urgent, take the time to consider your safety before leaping into an installation project.
