Bicycle storage hooks can be an effective way to manage storage for your bike when it is off-duty. However, apartment dwellers have mixed success with using these kinds of installations in order to keep bicycles safely stowed away. Each kind of space has its own accommodations for various kinds of storage, and even though bike hooks don’t take up a lot of room, they may not go with some kinds of interior designs. Here are some of the benefits and disadvantages of using bicycle hooks in your apartment.
Pro: Neat Bike Storage
Storage hooks often provide a very tidy “resting position” for your bikes. Instead of standing in a tangled mess in the entryway, your bikes can sit neatly against the wall, leaving you more space to go in and out of your home. Bicycle hooks are also good for stabilizing a bike to minimize the chances of it getting knocked over, scuffed, etc. while it is not being used.
Pro: Security with Storage Hooks
Another great thing about bicycle storage hooks is that they give owners an incentive to bring their bikes in from the outdoors when they are finished riding. A popular alternative is to leave bicycles in bike racks or other outside areas, but this can lead to theft or damage of a bike, which can be expensive depending on what you’re riding. Even with good bike locks, parts of the bike can disappear. Bike hooks help to ensure security for a bike rider’s best asset.
Pro: Wheels Off of the Ground
Another thing about bike hooks is that they can keep bicycle tires off of the floor, limiting the amount of dirt and grime that these items track into an apartment.
Con: Installation
Bicycle hooks can be difficult to install, for example, in a brick wall or a plaster façade. They can be even harder to uninstall, since the large holes required will be left on the wall after the hooks are removed. This means that, for a lot of renters, bike hooks are not a viable option, and for many others, it’s not worth destroying part of a wall in order to have this handy storage option.
Con: Aesthetics
In some cases, bicycle hooks just don’t complement the overall interior design of a room. They can make a space look tacky or unrefined, which can present a problem for roommates or others. In addition, bike hooks can be an annoying protuberance from a flat wall, where they might get brushed up against or hook onto passing items. Look out for good interior layout when installing this storage equipment in your space.
Bicycle owners can think about all of these things before going ahead with installing bike hooks in a shared apartment or other similar home. It’s best to think the situation over carefully before proceeding with the significant alterations involved in putting a set of bike hooks up on the wall.
