Save Money with a Home Gym

Staff Writer · Oct 3, 2009

You don’t have to spend excess money on membership fees to a health club when you invest in a home gym. There are simple tools and equipment you can buy that will get you the physical and health results you want, for a fraction of the cost of paying to access a commercial gym. Here are some ways to get started:

Buy Used Equipment

The best way to find cheap equipment for your home gym is at yard sales. Sometimes people want to unload bulky equipment because they’re moving and it’s not worth paying the shipping costs. Sometimes, the equipment might need a small part, and the owner doesn’t want to bother fixing it. In a lot of cases, someone was motivated to start an exercise program and bought a home gym, but for whatever reason, they didn’t use it and want to recoup at least a little bit of money for it. In all of these scenarios, there’s a great opportunity to save big on a home gym. Check your local newspapers and message boards for garage sale listings, and visit each one until you find what you need. It can be a hit or miss, but it’s worth it when you do find a deal on the equipment you need.

You can also check for used equipment online on sites like eBay and Craigslist.

Make Small Investments

You shouldn’t have to buy the most expensive equipment out there to get fit or stay in shape. Do you really need to buy $1,000 worth of equipment when you can you use an exercise ball and some free weights? If you’re dedicated to frugal living or saving money, then research alternative ways to achieve the same physical results with cheaper equipment for your home gym. There are even ways to use your furniture or your broom to exercise. You should also build your gym over time, and try not to exceed your budget or unnecessarily dip into your savings to buy everything at once.

Avoid Lengthy Contracts and Penalties

There are countless horror stories about people who have locked themselves into a gym contract and then, due to job changes or family circumstances,  ended up owing high penalty fees for breaking their contracts in order to move. You avoid all of that with your home gym (you just need to pay your rent). You will incur costs to set up your gym, but nowhere near what you’d be obligated to with a health club membership, as long as you remain frugal in your approach.

Save on Fuel

Unless your gym is right around the corner, you may have to travel to get there. With escalating fuel costs, this can add up over the month. You’ll need to add this expense to your membership fees and other gym costs to compare the true savings with using your home gym. You may also add mileage to your vehicle over the course of a year just to go the gym, which factors into your car maintenance costs.

Saving money with your home gym is well worth the effort and research. You should avoid signing contracts with a gym if at all possible, and instead find ways to get fit at home.
