Save the Environment: Buy Bamboo

Staff Writer · Jan 20, 2011

The fast depletion of our natural lumber resource has more and more people turning to bamboo to help save the environment. Although trees are often re-planted and Eco-harvested, the supply is slowly becoming unable to keep up with the demand. Bamboo is a fast growing grass (yes it is technically a grass, some say it is a weed), it can grow practically anywhere, has great strength and can even be used as food or clothing. The root system stabilizes the earth preventing erosion and bamboo ingests greenhouse gasses producing up to thirty-five percent more oxygen than most trees. Given the many uses of this renowned super grass, as well as the advanced harvesting and factory technology, more and more businesses are offering it as an environmentally sound choice.

Furniture

Bamboo furniture is as strong, if not stronger, than conventional wood. It is sturdy, durable, will not swell or shrink due to temperature change and maintains longevity that can easily mesh into any household for years to come. When shopping for bamboo furniture the first thing you should look for is that it is manufactured using water-base, formaldehyde-free adhesives with no or low VOC (volatile organic compound) finishes. This will ensure that you are purchasing a green product and not one that will eventually damage the planet due to additives. The company Ecodesignz offers a variety of bamboo furniture products that rival some of the top of the line wood choices. This company also advertises its commitment to sustainable Panda-free, chemical free production practices. Also, looking for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label will guarantees you are purchasing a sustainable, socially responsible product.

Floors

After bamboo goes through a rigorous process of cutting, washing, infestation protection and shaping, the result is one of a fine grain wood-like material that can be installed in any home as impressive, highly durable flooring. Prices can range from about two to four dollars per square foot and up. This is fairly comparable, if not less expensive, than many woods. Home depot has been selling more bamboo flooring as well as the above mentioned company, Ecodesignz. It comes in several different wood-like colors and usually require a tongue-n-groove or adhesive installation. Again, if adhesive is used it is in your best interest to try to obtain the least toxic choice. Also, make sure the bamboo you purchase is at least three years old to ensure a strong long lasting quality. Many companies allege that they only use four to five year old culms (the sprouts or tusks which is the bamboo).

Houseware

Salad bowls, spoons, cutting boards and pretty much anything else you can imagine in a home is easily found made from bamboo. Some designs are so unique friends and family will almost always wonder aloud at the uniqueness of this malleable hard grass. Some companies doing interesting things with bamboo are Enrico’s Products, SLX Housewares and Mountainwoods. Each item is dishwasher and microwave safe needing no special treatment whatsoever.
