Saving Energy: Keeping an Efficient Computer and Apartment Office

When you work hard on saving energy in your apartment office, you’ll end up with a more profitable business. Even if you’re just working from home or attending college, you’ll reduce your personal living expenses, or save your employer money if you’re telecommuting. There are many ways to use less energy that involve paying for costly equipment. However, there are simple ways to use less energy without any major investment.

Turn Off Computer Monitors

Every time you walk away from your computer, to take a break, make a call or cook, you’re wasting money if you leave the computer monitor on. It costs money to run the monitor, and depending on the type of monitor, it may cost more in electricity than running the computer itself.  Make it a habit to turn of the monitor when you get up from your chair, even if you think it’s just for a few minutes. Those few minutes often end up being many minutes, and sometimes an hour or two go by. There are times when you’ll forget, so one back up plan is to set your computer to sleep mode. When there’s no activity after five or 10 minutes, whichever you choose, the computer will go to sleep, and the monitor will shut off.

Printers

You probably already turn off printers and copiers when you’re not using them. If you don’t, then start doing so today. Saving energy is a bit tricky sometimes, because it’s easy to forget that some of your apartment office equipment still draws power even when you turn them off. You have to do more than switching the off button. Unplugging the printer from the wall will stop it from drawing power. If it’s difficult to remember to do that, then buy a power strip, plug the printer into it, and then plug it into the wall.  Turn off the power strip when the printer is not in use.

Laptops Vs. Desktop

Laptops are more efficient than desktop computers. They require less energy to run, and you can use the battery to work without electricity for up to 4 hours on some laptops. You can reduce your energy costs if you plug your computer into your electrical outlets, less often. You can’t do that with a desktop computer, which requires you to plug it in to use it. If you haven’t made a purchase yet, consider buying a laptop instead of a desktop if you’re serious about saving energy. If you have a desktop, then save up for a laptop, so that you can use the desktop less often.

Rechargeable Batteries

Try to use rechargeable batteries instead of alkaline batteries in your apartment office. You’ll save more money in the long run, and they have a larger energy capacity. You can use batteries in common devices, such as your telephone, flashlights and digital timers.

Saving energy in your apartment office should be important to you, and you should take the steps necessary to save money in this area. You’ll need the money you save for other portions of your business or personal budget.
