Strategies to Save Money: Rent DVDs from the Library

Staff Writer · Sep 29, 2009

One of the best strategies to save money is to cut back on unnecessary spending, but how can you effectively unwind if you’re unable to keep yourself entertained? Watching films and TV shows is a commonly enjoyable pastime, but it can be an inexpensive hobby unless you head to the library, where you can rent DVDs while saving money.

Skip the Cable or Satellite

People have become so accustomed to having dozens or hundreds of channels that they’ve stopped thinking of cable or satellite TV as a luxury. Cable and satellite offer movie channels that play non-stop movies, but they’re not always playing a movie you want to see. Plus, unless you preset your DVR, you have to catch the movie at the start and not get up from the TV or you miss out on the entire story.

Some TV shows are exclusive to cable and satellite channels, but most eventually wind up on DVD. Heading to the library, where everything is free, is always among the biggest strategies to save money – and libraries often make a point of specifically stocking up on DVD box sets of shows that play exclusively on cable and satellite channels to make these shows accessible to everyone. So cut out the cable and satellite bills and rent the movies and shows you want to see, when you want to see them, from the library.

Stay Home from the Cinema

Heading for a night out at the movies can be an enjoyable experience, but it can also be unpleasant. Although you get to see the latest movies long before they’re available on DVD, you’re not the only one who wants to see them. Cinemas are packed with crowds. You pay good money to see a movie, but you can be easily distracted by your fellow moviegoers instead.

If you can wait just a few months, the latest movies will be available on DVD and many libraries stock up on even the latest releases. You may have to put your name on a waiting list, but saving money is worth the wait. Since movie tickets cost $5, $10 or even $15 each, depending on when and where you go, you shouldn’t make a habit of heading to the cinema. Most strategies to save money include cutting back on unnecessary expenses, so rent movies for free from the library instead.

Don’t Bother with Rental Companies

DVD rental chains are unable to keep up with online DVD rental companies and DVD rental kiosks because they overcharge. But even online DVD rental companies and DVD rental kiosks are only a good deal when you watch the DVDs quickly and return them in a rush. A better deal, the best when it comes to strategies to save money, and a more relaxing experience is renting DVDs from the library for free and watching them at your leisure in the one to two weeks you get to keep the films, and often you can even renew your DVD loan at no extra cost.

Include strategies to save money like renting DVDs for free from the library in your budget plan and you’ll find yourself on the path to saving money and building for your future.
