The Benefits of Purchasing a Portable Air Conditioner/Dehumidifier

Staff Writer · May 18, 2010

Until recent years, very few people heard of or considered purchasing a portable air conditioner/dehumidifier. Today, you’ll find home improvement experts, air conditioning service professionals and renters singing the praises of this device. It solves cooling problems, while giving the most flexibility to tenants in an apartment living situation. There are many benefits to owning a portable air conditioner/dehumidifier, which has led to its increase in popularity.

It’s Portable

Not to state the obvious, but portability is a big deal when you have to move out of your apartment some day with an air conditioning unit. The portability factor also helps while you’ll living there, so that you can shuffle it back and forth between rooms. If you rent a house and have access to a garage, you can roll it there and use it too. The alternative would be uninstalling and reinstalling a window unit in every room that you want cooled. It’s not practical to do this time after time, and you’re sure to incur back problems at some point.

Two for the Price of One

A portable air conditioner/dehumidifier eliminates the need for two purchases. You have two in one, which saves space and money. There are many health benefits of using a dehumidifier in your apartment. If you’re going to spend money to cool your room anyway, then it makes sense to buy a system that dehumidifies also.

Easy to Install

A vented portable air conditioner/dehumidifier only requires you to attach a single or dual hose outside your window. The hoses are used to remove hot air from the room to the outside, and to bring air from the outside in. A window air conditioning unit requires you to install front panels, and to set the heavy unit just right in your window. It’s more complex to install than simply rolling a portable unit into the corner or middle of the room.

Perfect for Small Spaces

If your apartment is tiny, then these units are perfect for you. Some of the complaints of the portable air conditioner/dehumidifier is that it doesn’t cool large rooms entirely. However, if the rooms you have to cool have small square footage, then it will work extremely well. One portable air conditioner/dehumidifier can cool or dehumidify an entire studio or efficiency apartment. For larger apartments, you may have to buy more than one, or roll the unit to where you are when you want to use it.

It’s Always Permitted

Some apartment buildings and city ordinances don’t permit window air conditioners anymore. However, if your apartment doesn’t have central air conditioning and you live in a hot climate, life will be unpleasant for you. A ceiling fan just doesn’t do an adequate job of cooling in those situations. However, there’s no problem using a portable air conditioner/dehumidifier in your apartment.

It’s because of these benefits that so many renters are opting to buy a portable air conditioner/dehumidifier. They’re not cheap, but the benefits in the long run more than compensate for the purchase price.
