The Pros and Cons of Granite and Marble Countertops

Staff Writer · Jun 3, 2011

Granite and marble countertops are generally used in the kitchen and bathroom. The use of granite or marble for countertops is purely a matter of personal preference as both these natural stones have their advantages and disadvantages.

Why Granite Countertops Work for Some People

  • Granite is appealing to people who love a sleek look. Such countertops have a reflective and glossy surface.
  • Granite is very durable. It is scratch and stain proof and ideal for use in the kitchen.
  • Granite comes in a variety of colors, grains and patterns and you can choose granite countertops that match the décor of your kitchen or bathroom.

Considerations

  • Granite is an expensive stone and might not fit all budgets.

Marble Countertops for Your House

  • People who want a sophisticated look opt for marble as this natural stone comes in unique natural colors.
  • A single slab of marble can be used for a complete countertop, making the countertop easy to clean and maintain.

Considerations

  • Marble is porous and easy to stain.
  • Since marble is sensitive to acids such as lemon juice and vinegar, it might not be the stone of choice for kitchen countertops.
  • Marble is soft and can develop cracks if something heavy is dropped on it. Constant exposure to water can also damage a marble countertop.
  • Marble countertops need to be replaced at intervals due to damage, and wear and tear.

Before deciding whether you want a granite or marble countertop, you should think about the look you want for the room and whether the countertop would be exposed to rough handling. Your budget too will help you in your choice.
