Two Questions to Ask an Interior Design Consultant

There are two  questions to ask an interior design consultant before choosing one to hire. Making such a decision isn’t a quick or easy process. Finding out about the Designers previous jobs, getting references, and seeing how compatible the designer is with you are all things to consider before hiring a person for your decorating needs.

Designer’s Background and Experience

When you have your first meeting with a potential designer, this is when you want to view a portfolio of their previous works. Keep in mind though that the pictures reflect the tastes of previous clients, and not that of the designer. Also, this is when you would want a list of two or three references. Calling the previous clients can give you an idea of the designer. You will gain insight as to how the designer listened to their ideas, how congenial the designer was and also if the clients would hire the designer again in the future. While interviewing the designer, ask if he/she has done a project similar to yours. Don’t worry about asking too many questions, it is important that you gain as much background information pertaining to their work history as possible.

Method and Rate of Pay

This is an important topic to have listed out specifically when a contract is signed. Contractors have many methods of payment. Examples are flat design fee, hourly, cost plus method and a mixed method. Getting information regarding how your designer will charge is important so that you can make sure you are aware of the full charges. This will help prevent any surprises along the way.

Also, knowing when the designer wants payment is important. Options can be required in full before work begins, half payment up front and remainder at the completion of the job, or  one payment the end of the job. Again, have this spelled out in the contract. If a deposit is given, this should be in the contract as well. As with any payment, getting a receipt is a good idea.

While deciding on a designer could be a time consuming project, finding out the important information before final selection can save a lot of time in the future. Having everything spelled out in a contract will help protect both parties from any misunderstandings.
