Using a long distance moving company is typically a very good idea. It will save you from a lot of hustle and bustle of a big move. Most people are unaware of all the services that a long distance moving company offers. In addition to shipping your boxes of belongings and furniture to a new city across the country or across the state, long distance moving companies provide help to get you settled in your new hometown.
They may provide you information and application assistance with schools in the area, something that’s especially helpful if you are moving mid-school year. Some moving companies even help with finding a new home or apartment in your destination city if that’s something you haven’t been able to do prior to the move.
Hiring a Long Distance Company
Before hiring a moving company, get estimates from several national companies. First go with the companies that service national moves with offices in your local area. Do price comparisons. If the price is significantly less with one not in your area, go with it. Otherwise, opt for a mover whose main contact is someone you can personally meet while planning the move. Make sure to have the number close at hand. Don’t be afraid to use it.
Price Considerations
After receiving your estimates and citing exactly which services go along with each estimate, research the companies with local consumer organizations and the Better Business Bureau. If the clearance is good, go back to the company. If you are budget-minded, you may try to negotiate with the mover at this point. Moving prices often fluctuate. If you’ve gotten a better estimate somewhere, yet would rather go with a better company, tell your company of preference the estimate that was cheaper. It’s even more effective if you have the estimate and services it provides in writing. Ask the company to meet the price, and it just might do so.
Vehicle Shipping
If you are not personally driving to your new destination, you likely require vehicle shipping. Many moving companies offer this alongside the services for moving the contents of your home. Others don’t, but most at least have recommendations. You can often get a better deal on vehicle shipping when going through your long distance moving company so be sure to ask them. It’s usually less stressful to fly to the destination than drive, especially if it’s a very long distance.
Tips for an Easier Move
Always remove all items from closets and drawers prior to moving furniture. If you are having the movers pack your house for you, they will take care of that. Otherwise, all furniture items must be completely cleared out prior to the move.
What some people don’t realize is that you don’t have to be in your destination locale in order for your things to arrive there. As long as you sign a third party authorization form with most moving companies, you can send your stuff along before you get there. This can prevent stress for some people who are moving while dealing with last minute business at the original destination.
