Professional relocation services can do just about anything you need done when you’re going to move, whether locally, to another state or province or abroad. They vie with each other to offer transferees satisfaction in terms of service quality and cost. The following paragraphs show what they will do for you to eliminate or minimize the hassles of moving.

Services at Departure Point

  • Consultation/planning of your move, possibly with just one expert member of staff especially designated for you, so that you will need to contact  only one individual about your relocation from start to finish. At this opportunity, try to get a good idea of the total cost for your move, including the fees for accessorial services, i.e. fees related to packing/unpacking, your appliances and other additional services
  • Free relocation estimates
  • Assistance in selling your home (finding a buyer for your home)
  • Professional packing of your belongings
  • Door-to-door service (in case of an international move, this means transportation of your removals to the departure seaport/airport, doing outbound customs clearance at this port, collecting the shipment at the destination seaport/airport, handling inbound customs clearance at this port and then transportation of the goods to your new home).

Services at Destination Point

  • Collecting your removals, clearing them through customs and transportation to your new home or temporary storage facility (see door-to-door service above)
  • Set up of your furniture at your new home
  • Assistance in finding a temporary housing rental
  • Assistance in finding a new home (in the purchase of a new home)
  • Assistance in finding a temporary storage facility for your goods.

Other Services

  • Transportation of your car;
  • Transportation of your pet  (in case of an international relocation, taking care of quarantine formalities at departure and destination);
  • Dismantling and re-installation of telecommunication equipment in case of a corporate office relocation.

Other Things to Know

You may choose to use the moving company’s complete package or just some of the services they offer, as you see fit. You must be present when the moving company at the departure point is doing the survey of your belongings for packing and when the items are being checked off the van at destination (in case of a local or interstate move) because you have to sign the inventory list (delivery receipt) and make a note (inventory exception) on it if any irregularity is found (a missing item or damage).

If you intend to pack yourself one or two boxes, be careful not to include hazardous materials, flammable or combustible liquids, like paint, alcohol, (a bottle of) gas for your lighter, etc.

Plan your relocation well in advance so that your mover may have enough time to do their work. Remember also that you must prepare and have all papers ready, e.g. regarding visa, working permit, etc., in case of an international relocation.

International relocation services, corporate relocation services and domestic relocation services each have their own aspect. An international move involves immigration, customs and maybe quarantine. A corporate move may involve telecommunication and IT services, while federal law may affect a domestic relocation.
