Blinds or curtains? The question of what will best cover your windows is not an easy one to answer. However, by considering your needs and wants in a window covering, the task can become a simpler one.
Privacy Considerations
The first concern in deciding between blinds or curtains is the amount of privacy you seek. Blinds are easily closed but often leave about a half inch of open space on each side even after being fitted. Similarly, curtains may not close all the way in the middle, leaving a partial amount of space. Additionally, you must consider the ability of individuals outside to see shadows through either window covering. Unless the curtains are dark colored or lined, or the blinds specifically identified as thicker than usual, both will show some amount of shadows should a light be turned on in the room. Blinds will show less shadows than curtains, but are not shadow-proof.
Light Considerations
The next concern is how much light you want in the room. In a living or dining room more light may be appropriate. In this instance, drapes may be a better fit since they will allow for full window exposure when pulled aside. In contrast, you may want to block more light in a bedroom to allow for easier and longer sleep. Dark colored or lined drapes or thicker blinds may be needed in this instance.
While blocking most light, because of the space between each slat, blinds will never completely block all light. However, it is easier to control the amount of light in a room with blinds since you can choose how far to open them in different situations. Curtains are either open or closed, and therefore either let in all or no light.
Creativity Considerations
Think about how creative you want to be with your window coverings. Drapery fabrics come in a variety of colors, patterns and styles and are therefore more creative than blinds. If you want your windows to be focal-point of the room or enhance the room’s color or décor, curtains may be your best choice. If, however, you desire something sleeker and more functional for the room, blinds may provide these features.
Cost
Of course, a main concern when deciding between blinds or curtains is their cost. Knowing the amount you can spend on window coverings is essential before shopping. Remember that your budget must extend to all windows in the house and that you may need to include installation charges, if applicable.
Installation
Another factor to consider is the ease of installation of the coverings. Blinds often come with the hardware to mount them inside the window frame, but certain blinds may require professional installation. This cost must be included in your budget. Curtains require a curtain rod and hooks, neither of which is typically included in the purchase of the curtains themselves.
Two aspects that are often overlooked for installation are space and wallboard requirements. A curtain rod needs several extra inches on each end to accommodate its end caps, and the depth of a set of blinds must match the depth of the window frame. Most important, though, is what surrounds each window frame. It is not uncommon for builders to frame windows with metal or materials other than wood, which makes it harder, if not impossible, to hang certain types of curtain rods or blinds. Before hanging your window coverings, check the window frame to make sure you buy the proper materials.
Community Requirements
Prior to making your purchase, check to see if your community regulates window coverings. Certain homeowners or rental associations restrict the type, size or color of curtains or blinds. Researching this will prevent mistakes or the need to re-purchase and re-hang window coverings.
Blinds and curtains each offer unique and different decorating and privacy elements. Contemplating what you want and the community’s requirements prior to shopping will make the job easier. Do not forget to measure the space and ask for help from the store’s experts, doing so will make the job a great deal easier!
