Resident 2012 - 2013

1/18/2014

I lived in Kirby Station from March 2012-March 2013. I moved out of town and naturally when I decided to return to Memphis it seemed easiest to rent from the same complex. Now, Kirby Station is nothing spectacular. The prices are a bit high for the square footage and lack of amenities/luxury (4700 for barely 600sq feet). However, the grounds are nicely kept and surrounding neighborhood is quiet and safe so I guess that is what you are paying for. At any rate, for convenience and familiarity, it seemed best to return. That is where the problem arose. I contacted the office, told them I was returning and completed all of the paperwork. They remembered me as it was less than a year ago that I moved out so everything seemed all good. I had an excellent history with them, was NEVER LATE ON RENT NOT ONCE and had zero issues. However, to my horror I was not approved through their management company. Of course, I questioned this because I know I do not have a negative rental history or anything like that. However, I am a Grad student and I do have student loans...in the high numbers. But that's what comes with furthering your education. After days of waiting and them contacting their corporate office it finally was confirmed that my amount of student loan debt is too much. My issue is that this company (MAA Management), despite my very recent positive rental history with them and every other complex I've lived in chose to deny me based on STUDENT LOANS. Which by the way are in deferment as I AM STILL A STUDENT. Therefore, it has NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER ON MY ABILITY TO PAY MY RENT/OTHER BILLS. This is upsetting to me. Feels like regardless of my past experience with them and positive rental history I am still just a number and my credit score/student loans are all that matter. Anyway, Beth in the from office was awesome, she sympathized and tried her hardest to work things out for me but unfortunately her hands were tied. So, if you are a student or have any type of "debt" (auto loans, bank loans...)you may not want to waste that $50 on this app. Plus as I stated, for them to be so selective, there's nothing spectacular about the units! Luckily I found a nicer complex nearby w/better rates that had no issue with my educational pursuits and the financial burden that comes along with it! :) Happy renting! :)
