A Realist's Review: Pros and Cons (More Cons Than Pros!)

This has not been the best experience I've had in an apartment complex. Pros: The maintenance men are friendly and if your need is important, they will respond fairly fast, (ie, microwave shot and needing replacement). The complex is overall very well kept, the courtyard is perfect for pets and there is a great area for walkers or joggers to make a 2.5 mile trek around the apartments. There isn't a lot of traffic in the area and I'm happy with the location. I feel safe and I like the way the complex looks. Cons: The office does not keep good track of your payments....it is absolutely necessary to keep record of payments made in person AND online. I have had several incidences where they will either credit my account unnecessarily or claim that I have defaulted in payment or that my pet deposit was not paid. Cable payment is mandated. You pay for cable whether you want it or not...an extra 45.00 a month. This was not disclosed to us until the day we signed our lease. When I moved in...the apartment was very dirty. The last resident did not clean the apartment and on the day we were to sign the lease, my boyfriend saw one of the agents coincidently entering the office with a bottle of windex and paper towels. Last minute cleaning, I think? I had to scrub the place down myself to feel at home. The tub wasn't clean...and that's really gross. Always view the apartment you are moving into before you sign the lease...our countertop has burns on it from pots or pans...and the countertops are white with accents of coffee cup stains...great! There was also paint dripped everywhere including the carpeting...and a washrag covered in paint was stuffed into our garbage disposal. That is negligent and dangerous. The interiors of the apartments are not that great...crown molding is nice but the carpet is very cheap and matted within a few weeks. The stove and fridge is dated but works. Our dishwasher really sucks. The paint is super cheap and chips when you brush against it. The trash situation is bad. They do NOT pick up resident's trash...and they should because the complex is huge. They have ONE compactor for the entire complex...and the trash just builds into a mess over the weekends in the front of the complex. The workout room is a little dated, but most of the machines work...which is good. A lot of the barbells have been removed, probably by residents. The hot tub rarely works...and when it does...a few residents can be heard late at night shouting or talking loudly from the hot tub. There was people out there at 4am the other night, completely disregarding the apartments near the tub until some guy from a nearby building shouted at them to, "Shut the fu*k up!" Boy, they got quiet fast. Overall, we will be happy to leave to complex when the lease is up and move onto better service. I understand that there will be good and bad about apartment living...but in this case, the bad definitely outweighs the good. That's a little much. I feel that Colonial Grand takes the overpriced rent they charge and spends as little as possible on the complex.
