Resident ā€¢ 2008

4/27/2008

Good value for the money

When we found out that we were moving to Houston, we only had three months to make plans. We found Brompton Court through a relocation service and after a number of e-mails and phone calls, we signed a lease for a place sight unseen. Overall, we've been quite pleased. We live in a newly-renovated apartment, and the paint & carpet were fresh when we moved into it. Unfortunately, some of the paint on the windows and trim is so cheap that it seems to practically flake off when something rubs up against it. In the last year, a number of major renovations have been taking place, including a garage overhaul and major water pipe replacement. Not having parking and water for a period of time is annoying, yes, but management have been great at letting residents know ahead of time. There have been a few car break-ins on the property (nothing new for any apartment complex in the loop), but Kit and the rest of the staff are very proactive about alerting residents so that they can take the proper precautions. One thing that's weird here is that there is not much of a sense of community among the residents. In fact, I'm not quite sure I've ever seen my neighbors before. This may be due to the particular demographic that lives here (students, medical professionals, long-term Texas Medical Center patients). Pros: Convenience store ON THE PREMISES! They have recently installed free wi-fi by the pools, and since I live in apartment right by one, it's saving me a bundle right now. The shuttle to the med center is fantastic -- the other residents on the bus have been really helpful at making sure that people who don't know their way around (like myself) can find their way. Also, the Brompton Court staff has always been helpful. Thriving ecosystem within the complex, complete with cute squirrels and birds if you're into that kind of thing. Maintenance staff is pretty nice, and gets stuff done within a reasonable amount of time. Cons: Fuse boxes are outside, which is annoying. Fitness center is unlocked, so I feel a little uncomfortable going there at night by myself. Bathroom has an incredibly loud exhaust fan, smells a little bit moldy. The occasional roach -- but it's mostly a Houston thing. A note to future residents: After a heavy rain, a tree in the parking lot fell on top of our car and dented the roof. Parking mishaps are always at the expense of the resident, but at least the maintenance staff was nice enough to get their chainsaws out and cut us out. If you plan to live here, try not to park in the spaces next to the trees that busting through the sidewalk and leaning over. Overall, we like Brompton Court. It's not the fanciest place we've ever stayed, but it's certainly good value for the money and the staff is friendly and attentive. The only real reason that we're planning to move is to find a place with W/D hookups.
