Poor management mars an otherwise acceptable complex

My review for the complex and maintenance: Well maintained, older apartment complex, with reasonable maintenance turn around. In my experience, problems that are reported generally are dealth with in a reasonable time, although in some cases it may take a reminder or two if the problem is minor. The grounds are well kept, and the management has recently put some effort into making needed updates (refresh parking lines with new paint, updated washing machines, and a new valet trash service ($25/month, required). Pets are allowed, and the community is generally friendly. Crime is an issue, including break-ins (car, apartment) and an rape in Feb 2010, with little evidence of increased security; residents have asked for increased lighting, cameras, and security since then, with little evidence of progress (still many lights out at night, no cameras, and the increased patrols only lasted a couple of weeks). My review for the management: You will be nickel and dimed for everything. EVERYTHING. Also, I've lived under the new management for about a year and a half, and of those 18 months, I had mysterious "fees" added to my account that, when protested, mysteriously disappear. Also, make sure to ask for copies of the rent checks you write b/c (a) I can't get them to give me receipts and (b) I keep getting late notices for rent that I've paid on time. Also, my neighbor had a break-in, which they reported to the management office, and the next day, when I asked why there wasn't a notice of a break in, the staff responded with the question, "Was there a break in?" (It took 3 days to receive a notice.) If it weren't for the hassle of dealing with the management, I would generally recommend this complex for the experienced city dweller, but the ridiculousness of the random fees, the lack of communication about crime, and the hilarity of having to prove whether I've paid my rent, even after my check has been cashed by the complex, has, for me, marred my rental experience at an otherwise quite acceptable apartment complex.
