An apartment balcony can make the perfect outdoor extension of your space. With just a little creativity and some well-placed greenery, you can transform a balcony of any size into a tranquil garden that’s perfect for meditating, morning cups of coffee, and evening hangs with friends. Here are some tips to help get you started:

Maximize Your Potential

Even those with teeny-tiny balconies can have a cool outdoor oasis. The key is to use all available space, including walls, railings, and even ceilings. Vertical gardens are gardens, too — think tiered planters and towering trellises.

Weather Forecast

It’s important to know how much sun, wind, shade, and other kinds of weather your plants will be susceptible to. Is your balcony exposed to the elements? Will your plants be safe staying outdoors all year long? Knowing this information will help you buy the right types of plants for your balcony garden.

Know the Specs

Ask your landlord about the square footage of your balcony, as well as the weight it can support. After all, plants and furniture get heavy qui!

Hanging Plants

One of the easiest ways to transform a balcony is to put up a few hanging plants. This works for balconies of all sizes, creating a lovely green curtain that provides you with much-needed privacy and shade.

Ledge Love

If floor space is at a premium and hanging’s not an option, feel free to use any available ledges to prop up your planters. Smaller planters are ideal here, but as long as the pot feels sturdy and level while it’s on there, it should be fine.

Flower Boxes

Want some more color on your balcony? Consider mounting a couple flower boxes on the railing. Fill them with your favorite varieties and watch them bloom before your eyes!

Bring in the Bamboo

Bamboo can be used to separate the seating area of your balcony from the garden. Potted bamboo shoots make a good contrast to the green plants and colorful flowers, resulting in an elegant, elevated look. Additionally, decorative bamboo touches like hanging wind chimes can provide music and add to the space’s peaceful vibes. If you really want to give your balcony garden a zen vibe, put a small bamboo water fountain in a corner.

Herb Haven

Whether it’s in one flower box or several small pots, many herbs are extremely hardy and easy to care for, making them a welcome addition to any apartment oasis.

Think Outside the Box

If traditional hanging or box planters aren’t your thing, feel free to get creative. Scour vintage stores and flea markets to search out repurpose-able items for a fun shabby-chic aesthetic. Old ladders, bookshelves, stools, and baskets are all cool touches that can elevate a balcony garden from blah to beautiful.

Eating Out

What could be better than having an outdoor garden and al fresco dining space? Even a tiny table and chairs or stools is enough to create a balcony dining nook where you and a few guests can enjoy a meal or happy hour cocktails.

Variety is the Spice of…

Once you’ve figured out what kinds of plants will do best in your area, the next step is the fun part: choosing your plants! Variety is key here. Think mix-and-match colors and textures that will add depth and charm to your garden.

Get Cozy

Not a lot of space? No problem! A cozy outdoor hang spot is still within reach when you fill your balcony with seating that doubles as storage. For instance, you could buy a soft bench that doubles as a place to stash gardening tools, then add accent plants and lush, green touches to create the dreamiest balcony garden imaginable.

If you’re a renter who’s been blessed with a balcony, consider yourself lucky. Make the most of the space with a serene balcony garden. No green thumb necessary — all it takes is a little imagination.
