4 Tips for Selling Items on Craigslist

When you’re in need of some quick cash or are simply looking to clear you apartment of old furniture and belongings, selling items on Craigslist is one of the best ways to do so quickly and effectively. Since Craigslist is a free tool to use, unlike eBay or a classified ad in your local newspaper, you really have nothing to loose by listing your stuff even if it doesn’t sell. Following these tips will give you the upper hand in selling on Craigslist.

1. Include Pictures

It doesn’t matter what you’re selling-people want to see pictures and are much more apt to look at your listing if you include at least one image. The picture doesn’t have to be super high quality, just good enough so that the potential buyer can get a basic idea of the general look and condition of the item. You’ll save yourself a lot of trouble down the road if you take the time upfront to snap several shots of whatever it is you’re selling.

2. Give a Detailed Description

Posting a picture of the item isn’t enough. You need to include some written details about the item when you list it. Not only will it paint an accurate picture of the item you’re selling, it’ll also help you score points with potential buyers. Taking the time to describe the item’s condition, size and function makes you appear like a more serious seller. People don’t want to waste their time-or be ripped off. Providing an accurate and detailed description is just one way you can boost your sales.

Remember to include measurements, especially in the case of furniture. People will want to know upfront whether or not something is going to fit in their home.

3. Write a Descriptive Title for Your Item

If you’re selling a couch, titling your item “Couch” isn’t going to cut it. Be descriptive enough that someone is going to want to click on your item to learn more about it. Something along the lines of “Black Ikea Couch – Great Condition” is better. If you have something that isn’t in great shape, but has a great price, include the price in the subject line. Price is a huge selling point on Craigslist. Include it whenever possible.

4. Include Selling and Delivery Information

Especially in the case of furniture, finding someone who will deliver the item, even at cost, is a huge selling point. If you have the means to deliver a large item, say so! Just be sure to tack on a reasonable fee (probably between $25 to $50) for your time, effort and transportation costs.

Also, you will increase your selling ability if you offer to meet someone in a place convenient to him or her to look at an item. In the case of smaller things (like clothing, electronics and collectibles), meeting in a public place near the potential buyer’s work or home could lead to a speedier sale. It’s a buyer’s market-anything you can do to cater the sale to them will only help you.

While none of these tips guarantee a sale, you’re better off doing everything listed here than not if you’re serious about selling your items.
