5 Tips to Reduce Monitor Glare in Your Apartment

Monitor glare can become a real annoyance whether it is on your television or your computer. It slows down your work on a computer and puts a strain on your eyes. The eyestrain can lead to other problems such as migraines and headaches. Prevent these problems by taking some steps to reduce monitor glare in your apartment.

1. Room Lighting

The most important factor in preventing monitor glare is lighting. Too much light can cause glare on the monitor screen. Overhead lighting can create glare but using only table top lighting will usually not provide enough light. The perfect combination is usually a combination that includes dimmed overhead lighting combined with desktop or floor lighting as well. To use dimmed overhead lighting use a dimmer switch to create this effect or buy lower wattage bulbs to use in the overhead lighting instead.

2. Glare Filters

You may want to consider purchasing a glare filter for your computer monitor. It is a simple screen filter that usually hangs from the top and covers your monitor screen to reduce glare. Many glare filters on the market today offer up to 95% reduction in glare so this can be a big help if adjusting the lighting in your apartment does not seem to do the trick.

3. Right Monitor

If you have had problems with glare in the past in your apartment and are in the market for a new computer or new monitor anyways, consider buying a flat screen monitor. These flatter models do not have as much glare as the screens that are more rounded. Flat screen televisions also offer reduced glare than a regular model.

4. Monitor Positioning

Placing the monitor at the best angle to the light is of big importance. Try situating the monitor several different ways until you find which way offers the least amount of glare. Placing an office or a television near a window in the apartment may seem like a great idea but windows can be one of the biggest causes of monitor glare. If you have no choice but to place your monitor near a window then place it facing away from the window. Put blinds or dark curtains on the window that you can use to lessen the amount of sunlight when using the monitor.

5. Window Film

Window film can easily be applied to windows and removes just as easily. It allows only a portion of the light in and also creates privacy if needed. If you have a window with a great view that you don’t want blocked by curtains or blinds but would like to block some of the light from coming in, window film is a great option. Not only does it block light but reduces glare as well. Window film can prevent fading on your furniture and block damaging UV rays as well as saving energy and money by insulating. It does not appear dark so your view from the inside out will not be altered but it does block light coming in and helps prevent your eyes from fatigue when looking at the television or monitor.
