Apartment Decorating: Designing around a TV in a Corner

Staff Writer · Apr 15, 2010

Apartment decorating includes designing around a TV in a corner if you own one. It’s tough to do, and bare walls don’t help. It ends up looking like an eyesore to everyone in the apartment if you don’t try to make it blend into the decor somehow. You shouldn’t make it the focal point of the room either, but if you don’t decorate around it properly, the TV itself will be the main attraction. Unless that’s what you want, decorate the walls and floors around your TV.

Use Artwork

A common technique used in apartment decorating is to use artwork to draw attention. Do this on the walls near your TV. Select great art prints or posters that match the decorating style you choose and hang them up on one wall close to the TV, and work your way out. The wall becomes the focal point then, and not the TV. The bolder and larger the artwork, the more this technique works. However, there’s no need to overcrowd your wall, especially if you’re working with a contemporary or minimalist decorating style.

Hang Quilts

If you apartment decorating style is country or something similar, consider hanging a quilt on the wall. It’s the perfect opportunity to display the work of family or others who might have sewn one for you as a gift. If you’re a quilter, then display your own work. Patchwork quilts give the room an authentic feel, but a quilt with any design will look great in the room, while “hiding” your TV in the corner.

Accent with Wallpaper

You have an opportunity to accent the walls behind the TV with wallpaper coverings. You don’t have to cover the entire room, just enough to make a statement where you TV is. Textured wallpaper or one with large patterns will make a great statement. Find one that makes sense for your favorite apartment decorating style. The colors should match the rest of the wall, or accent it. For this design technique to work, you should use neutral colors on the walls underneath the wallpaper. If you don’t have neutral colors, you should consider painting the walls (with the landlord’s permission). It will help with your overall decorating, because most decorating styles require or benefit from the use of neutral colors on walls.

Substitute Wallpaper for Fabric

If you don’t have permission to hang up wallpaper or don’t want to, use the same idea as accenting with wallpaper, but use fabric instead. Find a piece of fabric that will add to your apartment decor and bring your bare walls to life. This works to design around your TV in the corner when it’s shut off, but it may be distracting when you’re watching it. However, you’ll get use to it, or pick a fabric that’s not so distracting, such as one without a pattern on it.

Any of these techniques will help your apartment decorating efforts in the room with the TV.
