Home Organizing Tips for Workaholics

Workaholics barely have time to read organizing tips, and you have even less time to implement them. However, the following list of tips is well worth your time, and will help you to keep a safe and sanitary environment, that’s less cluttered. Realistically, you’re too busy to have a pristine looking apartment that requires you to clean and dust it all the time. Focus on these tips and you’ll improve your environment and organizing habits along the way:

Use Boxes

Assign a box to everyone living in the apartment. If you’ve got 5 or 10 minutes to pick up a room, throw the belongings into the appropriate box. For example, your spouse might be reading a book this month that ended up on the floor, or you left the paperwork that you were reviewing on the end table in your living room. You would put the book in your spouse’s box, and the paperwork in your box (unless it’s very important and you need to be more careful with it, then put it in its proper place). Set a time once a day for everyone to go to their box and put their items away, or have them stick their box where they want to, and organize when they please. You’ll have removed clutter and saved the time it takes to put individual items back where they belong. The most efficient way to use this tip is to have a central location for all the boxes. A hallway closet, or hidden behind the couch are two ideas that might work well in an apartment.

Set a Timer

Whether you’re organizing paperwork in your home office, doing laundry or organizing the kitchen pantry, set a timer for 10 minutes and don’t go over it. For example, if you want to organize piles of clothes in the bedroom corner, set your timer for 10 minutes and only work on that. When the timer goes off, stop what you’re doing. Walk away. This organizing tip is difficult for the perfectionist who wants to see the work complete. You will finish it, just not right then and there. Return to it the next day, or if the thought of the unfinished work drives you crazy, do another 10 minute session at the end of the day after you complete your other tasks. Keep in mind that with the time constraint, you’ll get more efficient about how you do things and you’ll finish small projects within the set time limit.

Choose A Theme for the Day

Back in the day when it wasn’t easy to organize and clean homes, women organized their chores according to the day of the week. For example, wash day (laundry) was every Monday. This is wisdom that busy people can use. Instead of trying to cram in various tasks throughout the day, choose certain days to complete tasks. For example, shop for groceries the day after all the sales flyers are available and you’ve had a chance to review it and make a list. Pick Saturdays for deep cleaning projects around your apartment.

These 3 organizing tips can lead to a safe and clutter free apartment for busy people. The best part is, they don’t require a tremendous amount of time.
