How to Get Rid of Dog Urine Stains

Dog urine stains can be a difficult type of stain to get out of carpet. If you are a dog owner it is probably an accident waiting to happen. Proud owners of a new puppy will probably also have their share of urine stains to deal with while going through the training process. Or maybe you have just moved into a new apartment to find that the old tenant left behind some urine stains on the carpet for you to deal with. Regardless of the situation, before you go tearing out that old carpet try these trick to getting out the urine stains.

Store Bought Products

Your local grocery store may have a limited number of products to choose from, but visit your nearby pet supply store and they should have a wide range of products that will not only get the stain out of the carpet but the odor as well. Look for products made from organic items. Because pet stains are organic stains themselves, cleaners using organic products are the best at getting them out.

Vinegar and Water

Many people report having just as good success, and sometimes more, with mixing up their own cleaner to get the stain out. This can save you money as well. Mixing up equal parts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and blotting with a towel is a good solution that works well. Remember to test on a small hidden patch of carpet first. The vinegar will get rid of the smell as well as the actual stain.

Detergent and Water

Laundry detergent gets out stains in your laundry so why not use it on your carpet as well. Mix up some laundry detergent with some water to apply to the stain and scrub. You only need to use a couple of tablespoons of detergent with some hot water and then it can be poured or sprayed on. After scrubbing, use a wet/dry or shop vacuum to vacuum up any excess moisture. This process is similar to using a steam cleaner on the stain.

Peroxide

Using peroxide on stains on the carpet is a well known fix as well. Again, be sure that you test a spot on your carpet the first time you try this to be sure that it will not dye or bleach your carpet. Mix some with some water in a spray bottle and spray on the stain and then scrub. This solution is also known for getting out the smell of the urine as well. Remember, using spray on perfume type carpet sprays only temporarily covers up the smell of the stain.
