Innovative Family Room Decorating Ideas

Looking for some new and fresh family room decorating ideas? Here’s some tips to get you started and help you bring inspiration to a room so frequently used.

Turn Your Bookshelf into Storage

Very little detracts from a room more than lots of clutter. Use that large entertainment center or bookshelf for storage by getting a few attractive baskets to put things in. These baskets can store magazines, books, toys, games, DVDs or anything that clutters up your space as it is. Inexpensive baskets are available from Target, IKEA, Pier 1 and Bed Bath and Beyond.

Turn a Wall into a Chalkboard

There’s nothing like the promise of chalk art on a chalkboard to make children flock to a family room. No need to buy a large chalkboard: this addition is available for under $5 for the cost of a can of blackboard spray paint. If the idea of a black wall is objectionable to your decorating sense, have no fear. Chalkboard paint comes in a wide variety of colors, including the traditional schoolhouse green. To apply to your wall, tape off an area for the chalkboard with tape and cover everything else in the area. After spraying on and letting it dry, add a trim frame around the outside and a cup for chalk at the side or bottom. You will find that the chalk art adds a great look to your family room, and the enjoyment the children will get out of it will please everyone in the family.

Make Modern Art Collages with Kids Drawings

For an innovative art idea for a family room, take a collection of art from the youngest members of the family and cut out the colored or painted sections. Cover a canvas with this artwork and layer it around. Glue each piece down thoroughly with a white glue, making sure the edges are secured. Keep layering, and feel free to add in wire, rice, glitter, or other additions to spice it up. When completed, brush a watered down glue mixture over the top. When you hang it on the wall you will not only enjoy the memory of your children’s artistic endeavors, but you will have a unique piece that will catch many compliments from visitors.
