Romantic Bedroom Decorating Ideas

Decorating your bedroom to feel like a romantic hideaway is easier than you think. Your goal is to find a design that makes you feel both sensual and calm. Focus on de-cluttering and creating a cozy, flattering and soothing oasis.

Simplify

First of all, the bedroom needs to be a place of serenity. Get rid of the clutter, remove the TV and computer and turn off your cell phones. It’s very hard to relax or feel romantic when you look around the room and see a mess or are interrupted continuously with distractions.

Texturize

Buy the best mattress you can afford and cover it in luxe linens. Get a down comforter or 100% cotton quilt. Rich pinks and deep crimsons feel luxurious and sexy. Fabrics that enhance or reflect light like satin, add dimension to your room. Buy soft cotton sheets, but keep in mind that they generally don’t get any softer once you’ve hit the 400-500 thread count mark. Don’t bother spending money on anything higher.

Get a padded headboard or put an upholstered bench at the foot of your bed. Make every nook in the room a place you want to touch.

Layer window treatments; this not only gives the room a closed-in, private feel, but also gives you more control over lighting.

Look at Lighting

If you can install a dimmer, do so. If you are stuck with apartment lighting, at least get soft white bulbs. You can even use colored bulbs. Amber gives the illusion of bronzed skin and pink adds a blushing quality. Make the most of lamps and candles and don’t use overhead lighting if it’s too harsh. There is nothing less sexy than bright light in the bedroom.

Appeal to Your Sense of Smell

Candles are classic for a reason. Aside from the sexy light and shadows they produce, scented candles set the mood in other ways. For instance, lavender is known to reduce tension and promote relaxation. Rose and Lily are also good choices. If you’re not the floral type, and you find the following romantic, you might want to go with things that remind you of baked goods. Chocolate, vanilla and caramel scents automatically remind you of indulgences.

You can even dab a little essential oil on your lightbulbs before you turn them on for a steady stream of scent.

Think Hotel Suite

Add a chair or chaise lounge to a corner of your bedroom if you have the space. Pair it with a tidy table and a sheepskin area rug. Have a plush robe and slippers handy. Try serving champagne and strawberries on a classic tray in the candlelight.

You’ll fall in love with your bedroom (and your significant other for that matter) all over again with these simple makeover suggestions. Remember, you’re the only one who knows what makes you feel romantic, so follow the guidelines, but listen to what speaks to you. If you focus on the goal of attaining a calm and sensual space, you’ll know what specific design choices are right for you.
