Where to Find Cheap Portable Air Conditioners

Staff Writer · Apr 14, 2010

Cheap and portable air conditioners may seem like an oxymoron. You are going to have trouble finding one that’s less than a few hundred dollars. There are exceptions, and you may stumble upon a moving sale where a desperate owner wants to get rid of one for quick cash. For the most part, you’ll have to do a lot of comparison shopping to find great deals. Though the online websites are accessible to anyone, the in store section of this article will focus on where to buy them in the United States.

Cheap Portable Air Conditioners Online

There are several ways to find one online. Begin your search at Amazon. Individual sellers and stores sell portable air conditioners on Amazon, and it’s easy to sort your options from lowest to highest prices. You can find used ones for sale as well. Amazon recently updated its methods of charging customers. Your bank account and cards are charged when the item is shipped. There are also dispute resolution options through Amazon, making it a trusted site to make your online purchase. If you need to return the air conditioner, Amazon will honor that as well.

Nextag.com is another website to use for comparing prices online. Type in “portable air conditioners” and add to the search term the BTUs and some of the features you need. For example, type “portable air conditioners 12,000 BTUs heater dual hose.” The more specific you are, the better. Unlike Amazon, Nextag lists results from many online stores on the web. It even marks the item with the “best value” for you. You can click on the item and get product details and other information without leaving the website. When you’re ready to make your decision, you can visit the store to make a purchase, open an account (if required) or learn more information.

Cheap Portable Air Conditioners in Stores

Wal-Mart is the best store to check for cheap portable air conditioners. Check the fliers often for sales on air conditioners. However, if you miss a sale, you can still take advantage of Wal-Mart’s cheap prices. It’s easy to return it to the store if it doesn’t work out. If you buy an air conditioner with too many BTUS or not enough, you can exchange or return the unit at any store if you keep you receipt. Wal-Mart also sells multi-function portable air conditioners at lower prices, including portable air conditioners with heaters, and air conditioners with dehumidifiers.

Another store to check locally that you might not be considering is Best Buy. They sell more than just computers. They have a line of portable air conditioners that are affordable, compared to many other stores. Some of their air conditioners are almost as low as Wal-Mart, and you could probably beat a Wal-Mart price if there’s a sale at Best Buy. The store’s return policy is not as flexible as Wal-Mart, so check that carefully in case you need to return it if it doesn’t work for you.

Cheap Portable Air Conditioners on Craigslist

You do run the risk of having a used portable air conditioner not work out for you. When you buy it from an individual, you can’t return it, and you’re never quite sure when it will stop working. However, you may be willing to take those risks for a very low price. If so, check ads on Craigslist.com, especially during the spring and summer months when people are moving.

Finding a cheap portable air conditioner will save you money in the beginning. However, you still need to find one that meets all the requirements necessary for the unit to function properly in the room you want to cool.
