Lived here for a year...and ready to move

You obviously get what you pay for here...the rent is the cheapest around, but the apartments themselves are the oldest and most outdated. I live in a 3 bedroom 1 bath apartment, and the living room is just too small. The size of the kitchen in my particular unit is decieving at first glance because without a table in the eat-in kitchen, it looks much bigger. There is little to no counter space and little cupboard space. I actually have air duct vents going through three of my cabinets restricting the storage in each by half. There isn't a dishwasher either, so having a drying rack...even temporarily takes up half of one of your two equally sized counters. There is a washer hook up, but nothing for a dryer. They do offer to rent a stackable washer dryer unit...which they do install a dryer vent for, but it requires you to lose a full size cabinet. The closet space is very minimal with the exception of the bathroom closet, which is very accomadating. The air return for the heat pump is in the living room and is super loud in every apartment that I have been in. I constantly have to adjust the volume on the tv to be able to hear it. Most of the apartments have tile floors, which are easier to keep clean, but they look like old asbestos tile from school houses in the 70's and 80's...and they are not in good shape. I have replacement tiles randomly installed that don't remotely match the majority of the tiles. My next problem is the lights...each bedroom has wall fixtures that require you to twist a nob to turn on and off, giving less than adequate light aside from being cumbersome and difficule to operate. All the walls have lead paint, which you are warned about when moving in...supposedly, there are enough coats of latex paint to make exposure minimal, but the amount of paint coats causes the paint to flake off in chunks and flakes from housing that has huge mold issues. The windows are extremely dated and less than energy efficient...In the last year I have had 4 months with electric bills around 150 dollars for less than 800 square feet! The mail slot in the door doesn't help either, since you can't cover it. The bathroom is very small and has a window in the tub/shower that is easily seen through...and they reccomend you open the window when you are showering to minimize the mold. I guess if you are an exhibitionist, you might enjoy this free built in feature. In the duplexes, you only share one wall, but the walls are thin enough that when I am asleep I can hear the tv and conversations with ease on the other side. I routinely have to call maintenance to come fix issues with my apartment and rarely have I had someone come in 24 hours...I actually got scolded for calling the 24 hour hotline to fix my AC on the 2nd day after I made the original call during regualr business hours. The temperature was 90 degrees inside and the maintenance man told me that I just needed to be patient. I routinely had to make complaints about maintenace people coming into my house and not leaving a notice that they came in...on one occasion, all the lights in my house were on and my tv was blaring when I came home. Also, there were several different instances when the maintenance team would come and just leave a note saying that I wasn't home and they didn't have permission to enter even after I gave permission verbally over the phone, and left a note taped to the door that they could come in. One maintenance man refuses to do any work in my house because I have a dog inside...but it is a 20 pound cocker spaniel that is always crated when I am at work...and crated when I am home and people come in to work (not a violent bone in her body, just to keep her out of the way). On the positive side, you do get a personal trash can with weekly pick up...you can have a grill outside, and the lawns are well manicured and a couple times a week. The front office staff is very friendly. I have never heard gun shots are had issues with theft or vandalism. The back of the complex does back up to the runway for the Navy's airfield, so you do get a lot of jet noise...but I got use to it fairly quickly and it doesn't bother me. It seems like all the roofs are being replaced (as of September 2011) All in all I would only reccomend this to people with low cash flow. It is liveable, just personally below my standard of living.

      worst staff, ever

The staff at merrimack landing is horrible. Very unprofessional, and clueless. All this company cares about is money. They're maintenance is a joke. The apartments themselves aren't too bad, considering the age. They have less based paint, which they warn you about. However, they do not warn you of the deteriorating fiberglass duct work. When we had to have our air vents cleaned by a third party company, they informed us that we needed to get filters for the air vents, as we were breathing in fiber glass. Much worse than the lead paint that's covered by layers and layers of paint. If anything is damaged in the apartment, they try to make you pay not only for the item damaged, but also punish you financially because its a lead based item that needs replaced. Maintenance takes their time, and your lucky to be informed if they even came. They will leave lights on, not clean up after themselves, and I've even talked to a few people that said maintenance eats their food. I have had to call Lawson Realty three times, because things cannot be settled in the office. But surprise, the company won't even call you back. Definitely breaking our lease early. The cheap rent is not worth the headaches.

Undeniably the best rate for what you get

I've had my lease for almost a year and I have no complaints. Its quiet and clean...couldnt ask for much more. If you want to spend $1000 or more on an apartment, then be my guest. But if your looking for a decent place with a fairly decent rental rate, then this is your place. To deter mold...CLEAN UP! No, you cant complain about the parking, because they tell you about parking before you sign the lease. No, you cant complain about the size of the apartment, because they show you the model before you sign the lease. Bottom-line...if you dont like what they offer DO NOT SIGN THE LEASE. You get what you pay for.

Click on this link if you have doubts about a murder at Merrimack Landing that the leasing office wont tell you about. You will notice that Monitor Way is the same street the leasing office is located and the townhouse where the baby died at is across the street from the leasing office. http://hamptonroads.com/2010/04/norfolk-mother-gets-17-years-neglect-murder Still want to move in here with black mold growing in your apartment, a micro mini stove, walls so thin you can hear your neighbor talking or having sex. Just because its cheap doesnt mean it's a good place to live.

Lived there with my husband and kids for almost 2 years before moving

And I have to say, I don't get where you all have all these complaints. Yes the place is old. Yeah it could use some upgrades. But upgrades mean higher rent, and that means single people who want to be on their own can't do it cause a single bedroom apartment anywhere else is expensive as heck. I'm also a military spouse by the way and the only complaints I can say I had are: 1. When we were first in a town house on Nipsic, I'd just moved in with my husband back when we were dating and neighbors moved in next door. They had a little girl who'd wake up screaming at night and the mom only squawked at her to shut up. I called the cops a couple of times. They never answered their door though and we eventually RENEWED our lease for a 3 bedroom duplex on Albemarle to take in a room mate. 2. The duplex started growing black mold from the condensation trapped around the windows. Heck it was my fault for not getting to it right away but bleach took care of it. Nothing else. No other complaints. My kids could go right out back and play in the playground almost anytime they wanted. If something broke, maintenance was there if not that day, the next morning or while you were gone. As for crime, care break ins. But I can tell exactly what kind of cars get broken into. Any car sitting too long or a supped up rice rocket. My husband's race car got broken into long before I moved in. He was underway for 5 days and left it at the apartment. That's the ONLY crime there. No murders or robberies. And if you don't believe me, click on this link and you can see a map of areas with certain crime patterns for up to the passed 90 days. All you do in input the info for the area. I used cross streets of Granby and Westmont since that's where I live now and it's less than a mile away. http://gisapp2.norfolk.gov/CrimeViewCommunity/wizard.asp Obviously the place is fine because they never have vacancies unless they're 1 bedroom. In the end you get what you pay for. If you want cheap, you get cheap. If you have high expectations and want that prim and proper luxury looking crap, go right ahead and pay out the arse for it. Oh and i still have friends who live there now and the only reason we left is because we wanted to own our own home, and living at Merrimack allowed us to SAVE money to do that. And the only people who write reviews are the people with complaints, so you're really making a pretty decent place look really nasty right now. Not hurting the rental offices turn over though.

                not worth it

I lived in a dump for 11 months. The neighbor I had, they had really bad domestic violence issue. The office people would not do anything about it. I ended up calling the cops every other week. I never felt safe there, especially when my husband was gone for duty or work ups that they had at sea. And i've been out of there for three months, and all of a sudden I got another bill from them for $300. And since today is saturday I have to wait till Monday to call them and ask why i have a bill. This is stupid. I would not recommend that anyone lives here. And Parking by my place was a nightmare. Our other neighbors had like 6 vehicles and they always took up the spots.

                  Good

I haven't lived here long, but so far i love it . My husband can ride his bike to work since we are right outside base. There is always plenty of parking, i can usually park right in front of my apartment. The neighbors are so quiet, in fact i never even see them. I will randomly see someone walking to there car. Lots of grassy area for my dog. The apartment IS OLD, but it's fine. I mean i'm young and married, the one bedroom is Small but its FINE for my husband and i. We don't have much, two closets in the hallway. We've had a couple of problems with the A/C and the maintenance people come out right away. There is a washer hook up in the apartment. The kitchen is small, and so is the bathroom. There is a little mold in the bathroom on the window seal, but that's easy to get rid of, just some maintenance. The apartment can use some renovations, but i love it. It's fine for a first home, and with rent price i can't really complain. I wouldn't want to stay here forever, but it's short term. I love that it's not typical apartment set up. All the neighbors are so far away, sound proof windows.

It's good for students or someone just starting out

I lived at Merrimack Landing for two years while in undergrad. I must say that I liked it there. My neighborhood was nice and quiet, my neighbors were very friendly. I felt safe being a single female, living alone. Mantinence was wonderful, they were very friendly and usually came out to fix whatever issue the same day. It's true that the bathrooms have some mold issues over time, a little bleach and water mix with a good scrub can fix that. The apartments are a bit old and small, but they are comfortable. I think they are perfect for college students just starting out.Or a couple just starting out. The staff were nice as well. Overall my stay at Merrimack Landing was nice, I didnt have many issues during my stay.It was my first apartment, I reccommend it to anyone who wants to save money, yet still want a decent, clean, and safe place to live.

                    The worst apartments ever!!!!!

These apartment are the worst. Me and my husband and our son moved to Merrimack Landing to be near Norfolk Naval Base. When we asked the people at the office how it was they were like they couldn't tell us. That was a for sure sign, but because they were right near the base we decided to stay away. Big mistake!!! There are all types of people living there and they watch your every move. The walls and everything is old. When they say you get what you pay for, yes, you get worst here. My apartment got broken into and my husband was there. Lucky he didn't get killed, and lucky me and my son wasn't there. This is the ------! I mean the ------!!!! Several people have had things happen to them in this apartment complex. I advice anyone who wants to live to see another day and not have to worry about are they next, needs to just pay a little more and live better. i wish that I would have done it!!!! I have moved out and glad of it. I wish that I could go back there and tell the staff a peice of my mind. The only people that are writing good reviews is the staff cause I doubt it that anybody likes.

You get what you pay for - which isn't much.

My husband and I have been living here in a one bedroom, one bath duplex for a year and a half and I cannot wait to move out in one month. In fact, I have already started packing, I am that excited! I'll start with the positives, as that list is much shorter. It's inexpensive, nobody can deny that. My experiences with the maintenance have been good. Every time I had an issue, it was resolved within 24 hours, sometimes immediately. The office staff is average. The only complaint I have about them is that they tried to tell me that I did not pay my $450 pet deposit and my dog had to be removed from my apartment within 24 hours. However, as soon as I showed them my signed pet contract, the issue was dropped. You have your own personal trash can, where most apartment complexes similar only have a community dumpster that you have to carry each individual trash bag to. The grounds are always well-kept and neat. However, I think this is a tactic used to give prospective renters a positive impression of the community. The location is great for commuting to base. My husband works on the opposite side of base from which we live, and it still only takes him 8 minutes to get to work each morning. And lastly, safety has been fairly good. Minus a few incidents, which could honestly happen anywhere in Norfolk. As for the negatives, in my opinion, they strongly outweigh the positives. The one bedroom duplex is ridiculously tiny. In the kitchen, there is an extremely small amount of cabinet and counter space. And to make matters worse, there is no dishwasher. As a result, you have to have a dish-drying rack which takes up more valuable space counter space. There is also zero storage space. If you have anything but the bare essentials, you must rent a storage unit which, in this area, isn't cheap. There are no washers or dryers, only a small community laundry facility that is small and terrible, as well. And DO NOT think that your own duplex will look like the model they show you, espcially the kitchen. The model has been updated, most of the other duplexes have not! The duplex itself is very low-quality, built in the 1940s and being old military housing. Old carpets, old counters, old cabinets, plaster walls, etc. As a result of this place being so old, it is not energy efficient at all. If you are planning on moving here, be sure to plan on paying more for your energy bills. I once had a $150 electric bill during the summer just from keeping the tiny 500 square foot place cooled at 72 degrees. And when I first moved in, you didn't have you pay for your water, but now you do. Also, the earwigs and spiders tend to think this place is home more than you do. It's very common to find a few a day, especially during the winter months. And don't forget the mold! MOLD, MOLD, and more MOLD in the bathroom! Once you get rid of it, it comes creeping right back. It's a never ending process or ridding it. So if you still plan on moving here, make it temporary. It's livable for a few short months at most until you can afford a nicer, better quality home.

                        Not that bad...

I've been reading the reviews on here, and some are just plain ridiculous. I lived there for a year, I moved from PA there to be with my husband. We chose Merrimack because it was referred to us by many people living there, and b/c it was so close to base/interstate. The neighbors I had on Albemarle Drive were great. We didn't talk too much, but it was nice having cookouts outside and getting knocks on the door with cookies there. I had a problem with maintence once, and the prob was fixed the same day I reported it. My apt was really clean, had abosuletly no probs with anything. The size in the 2BR duplex was good enough for myself, my husband, and a friend that stayed with us for awhile. The office staff was nice, all but one lady, but once you sit and talk to her, she was extremely nice. She is prob. just sick and tired of all the a**holes going in there running their mouth and being disresceptful to everyone. It was a safe place, close to base, parking wasnt bad, where I lived, everyone basically reserved their own spot. I had 2 cars and never had a prob parking...If people want an amazing super safe apt, then go find a gated community or move into military housing down the street. Merrimack was there when I need somewhere to live, didnt have a problem with anything too bad. Just a hint -- go on base to do laundry -- its cheaper, and alot quicker =)

I really did enjoy living at Merrimack Landing. Maintenance is fast to respond to any problems and the offices is very efficient. The only con to living here is on the weekends I can be hard to find parking depending on where you live and the walls were thin (I lived in a two bedroom). Otherwise it was a positive experience, right by the highway and not too far from downtown.

The staff is nice except this one black lady name Pam, never talk to her because she is always in a grumpy mood. Maintenence will always be there to help with any problems. We refered our friends and they like it too. The only problem is that we live on Congress Road and the parking on this street sucks. Merrimack is outside the Norfolk Naval Base and people would use our street as a park and ride. I wish there was controlled parking for situations like this. Many people are lazy to renew or get base decals. We are military as well and it pisses me off to see that they are lazy to go to the decal office and get decals to go on base. I have talked to the manager and there is nothing they can do because the street is a public street EVEN THOUGH THE MERRIMACK LANDING SIGN WHEN YOU COME IN SAYS THAT IT IS A PRIVATE PROPERTY. Overall a really nice apartment complex BUT DO NOT LIVE ON CONGRESS ROAD BECAUSE YOU WILL BE FIGHTING OVER PARKING!!!

I just moved in less than a week ago, and have been perusing these reviews. I feel like they are giving the place a bad reputation, because they're almost all bad. I know I haven't been here that long, but so far the perks are: *Always parking *Landscaping is very nicely kept up *Feels pretty safe *Haven't heard my neighbors *Office staff are friendly and helpful *Maintenance responds quickly *Was very clean when I moved in *Great prices Some negatives: *Obviously, the place is very old and I'm a little freaked out about all those reviews referencing the mold problem. I haven't seen any yet, but sounds like wintertime is the worst. *One of the maintenance people came in and did a terrible job, but I called them back to fix it and Russel was extremely helpful and polite. *One of the ladies in the office told me that it was really easy to get fined here (wonder what my first one will be...) Honestly, that's all I can think of. I'm a student, so I can't afford a super nice place but I'm very pleased with it so far. I guess if I start feeling sick in a month I'll be singing a different tune. Overall grade, A-

                                Not too bad

I've lived here 2 years as of August 2009 and am moving due to space restrictions, husband and I've had a daughter. The apartment complex is basically is you get what you pay for. The prices are great, especially if getting BAH if military, then you pocket a good amount of money. For a 1 bedroom, we've averaged gas: $25 summer- $50 winter. Electric: $58 year round on the budget plan and of course cable and phone and stuff. But it's not the worse place to stay at. The complaints that I do have are that they need to do some remodeling. My carpet looks like it hasn't been replaced in years..like over 10 years...so I suggest getting the apartment without carpet, unless you are willing to shampoo your carpet to keep it nice and clean like I've done. Not too expensive to buy a carpet shampooer. Another thing I didn't like was the bathroom because it has caulk all over ...that is one thing the complex maintenance does to fix things...caulk ...caulk...caulk. But as long as you keep bleach around to clean the bathroom..no big deal, especially to keep the mildew away from the window, since water gets on the window. But, being here 2 years, i've kept my apartment well...some people don't, so it simply depends on how you take care of it. Maintenance I think is great..extremely quick to respond to service requests. I've enjoyed the staff..haven't had any issues with neighbors, thankfully. I'm going to miss hearing the morning and evening taps since the base band plays it & my duplex is literally right by the gate. By the way, they have started outdoor remodeling of new roofs and new doors.

Me & my husband lived here cause we were new in town and didn't know any better. Just before I gave birth to my child, we had to move cause I refused to have a newborn living in a place like 8719 Albemarle Dr. the bathroom was full of mold, old smells, no matter how much i cleaned the kitchen tiles, is was always dirty. keep in mind that the tiles were supposed to be white, but it was brown.

                                    WORST HOUSING EXPERIENCE EVER!

My husband and I lived here for a year. We were more than ready to move when the time came. We had several instances with water leaks(one which an old pipe burst and the emergency line was out of service...go figure.. so I had to call the FIRE DEPT!) The fire dept said the piping was so old they couldnt even reseal it! When I notified the apt front office the very next morning that my entire apt was flooded and I needed to have it dealt with..I was told" It is your issue to deal with"..My husband was deployed and I had to deal with no water and cleaning up a flooded apt and damaged stuff. The office staff is the worst staff I have ever seen. Very unprofessional! We were not given our deposit back bc of this as well..even though it was not our fault in any way. There also is NO parking hardly at all. You will walk forever to your apt and worry that your car will be broken into. Not a safe environment..Apt walls are very thin..loud neighbors and the office staff never deals with that either. Their are no washers/dryers in apts..Laundry Facility is very outdated which you also pay to use. The apts constantly have spiders, bugs of all sorts..Our a/c unit never worked properly or heated either in the winter..reported it several times throughout the year to be fixed they claimed it was working well. The thermostat would never kick off and it would run all day and night and still we would have to plug in a fan to be able to breathe it was so hot! We were also told our apt had carpet..which it didnt have ANY!I could go on and on about this horrible experience. I wouldn't encourage anyone to live here for any reason. not even worth the money!

                                      Shocked!!

I was taken off guard when I read the bad ratings about Merrimack! I lived there for a year (enlisted AF, then I got married and transferred to Tx)and the property and the people were fine. The grounds were well cared for and the leasing office was polite and always willing to help. The place is huge compared to other complexes so of course issues don't get taken care right away but all of my issues (there were very few) were taken care of in a timely manner and with no extra fees. Expectations for an apartment should be high but they should also be realistic and this place met my expectations and then some. The folks in the office are very keen to help and keep the property and the apts were maintained regularly AND they pay off-duty police officers to reg provide security for the residents. Honestly, the place was great and besides a pesky neighbor or two I enjoyed living there....as a single mother living alone with her daughter I never once worried about our security or safety

                                        Worst Place

My wife and I moved in back in june of last year. went on a deployment and ever since we got back in Dec of 08. we still have a backed-up tub, so everytime we take a shower its more like a shower/ bath. i've heard my neighbors take a plunger to the tub to unclog it. i personally have put between 8-10 bottles of drano down it since moving in. asked numerous times to be fixed and still nothing. The noise from the base is absurd. All hours of the night and day you hear jets landing and taking off. Oh, and the LEAD paint that is on the walls. i saw and hole in the paint and could stick my hand in it all the way up to my wrist!!! That cant be safe for anyone of all ages. They are more worried about the outside looking good and attractive they dont worry or care about the tennats inside the facility. When we were on deployment they decided not to inform me about my rent payments, I found out from my neighbor that i owed money. Once i called they said " it's not our responsibility to inform you about your payments". I'm sorry but, isn't that part of your job title? To make sure your tennats may they be in the country or not know the status of the appt. and money situation. Also, anyone who wants to can drive in there and mess with anything, last summer, woke up one morning and went outside to find that our friends driver door, glove box, and center console was wide open. As i looked down the street i saw the same thing at about 3 or more cars on the same street. Nothing was ever done. Now when i'm coming or going at night i see 3 or more cop cars driving around the neighborhood. Inside the house, you can hear everything your nieghbors are doing, may it be showering, talking on the phone or even at nighttime. I could probaly tell you the size of their dog and how bad the guy snores and everything the fight about. Needless to say my wife and I are moving next month over to Pelican watch in Virginia Beach to get as far away from that place as possible. If your new to the area and you need a quick place to stay. And you dont want to pay to much for rent the best advice i can give is RUN!!!!!! go somewhere on hampton roads or anywhere else in norfolk. The managment is piss poor and the maintence is on there own time not the time of when you need it. they will get to when they get to it. may it be one or more months away.

never trust a girl named Rose.

Not only upon touring the property, which i think is way too run down, I went to put in an application after being told that i had a two bedroom, only to be told that it was just given to someone else. With the rudeness and hostility I recieved today just getting a number to another rental property from the same girl named Rose, I highly recommend for the managers to hire someone who is professional, and not a child.

                                            I wouldn't reccomend it

I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, then we moved into a two bedroom townhome. At the time, it was all we could afford. The people that lived across the street from us were the ones that had the mold problems. There are so many problems with these apartments. They have a huge problem with earwigs. Only the one bedroom apartments have carpet. Every time we did laundry, the paint on the walls would drip onto the floor and kitchen counters. If it got too hot in the apartment it did it then too. The manager is a really nice lady, but the head maintenance guy is a huge jerk. He thinks he knows everything until he is proven wrong. Last summer, we started getting little bugs in our bedroom that looked like flying ants. We found that it was because there were holes in our walls and they were getting in from inside. We just had way to many problems to list. The only reason someone should move here is if it is temporary and they can't afford anything else. It's in a somewhat safe area.

MerriJack Landing--you get what you pay for

This apartment complex was built in the 1940s and renovated in the 1990s. The apartment is currently owned by NHRA, but maintained by Lawson (and used to be old military housing). The walls retain moisture and the paint is prone to crack and peel. Moreover, there is a lead disclosure and a mold addendum to the lease agreement. If you choose to rent here, bleach or Tilex Mold and Mildew spray will be your best friends, especially in the winter when black mold seems to be at its worst. The apartment is basically an unfinished basement--wet, damp and requires the use of a dehumidifier (and probably an air purifier). Parking is a mixed bag--sometimes there is plenty of it, other times you have to fight for a space. You can definitely hear your neighbors whether they are taking showers, talking on the phone, fighting or being intimate. The laundry facility isn't good either because there are only 8 dryers and 8 washers for the entire complex and half the time at least one of them is broken. The washers aren't the best quality and your whites will look dingy after several uses. If you do choose to rent here, either buy your own washer and pay for a dryer hookup if your apartment doesn't have it or use another laundromat. Also, the grounds are probably more well-maintained than the apartments themselves. These apartments also seem to attract earwigs and spiders. It is also not very energy-efficient and is difficult to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Finally, you will have either really good neighbors or really ------ neighbors. If you must stay, I would definitely recommend going month-to-month and finding a new place as fast as you can. I still don't know why I stayed so long, but I am definitely glad I left. There are much better places to stay.
