SLEEZY! Applied for a rental, was given a "quote" that clearly stated it would guarantee the price for 48 hours. It did note that they would not hold a specific unit, but I would still be guaranteed the price. Well, after calling back within 24 hours, they had given away my 'quoted' apartment and told me they wouldn't honor the price they gave me because the unit was gone. When i noted I did not care about a specific unit, just that they honor their price, they made up some -------- and wouldn't give me any unit for the price I was quoted... bassically, IT WASN"T a quote! Didn't honor, price, move in date or style of unit. I walked..

Poor Maintenance
While the apartments are lovely, beware if something breaks as the management is slow to respond to requests for repairs - even on necessary items like AC, Furnace or leaks. When they do show for repairs, they try to take the cheapest route which often necessitates several return trips to get it right. I don't think it is the fault of the maintenance staff - I think they are taking their orders from the Property Manager on-site.

Satisfied renter
After selling my home in 4 days, I had to find a place to live pretty fast. I wanted to stay in an area that is convenient to most things. I chose Somerset Lakes because of location and apt. size.It was a rough start moving in since they forgot to put me in their computer system so I couldn't get the gate open for the moving truck at night. They did, however, come to my aid fairly quickly. The maintenance staff has been great and responds to my needs within 20 minutes or less (even on holidays). The apts. do need updated, but you just can't beat the view!

Apt. Office Staff is NOSY!!
Have liked my apt. and the location. However, the nosy apt. staff watching everything you do and every move you make can make you very paranoid to even set foot out of your apt. I have witnessed the apt. manager slowly driving through the complex and then stopping to stare. She'll then claim that a "neighbor is complaining," when it's really her SPYING! If you pay rent, that should be good enough, but you'll also have to deal with an EXTREMELY particular apt. manager and staff. Oh, and the fancy clubhouse that they now have is more like a museum. Look, but don't touch anything or sit on the furniture! The apt. office claims it was for the residents, but then won't even let residents have access to the clubhouse area! Parking has also become an absolute nightmare. One assigned spot per apt., but very little places for guests to park. Such a shame, when the apartments themselves and the area is pleasant...

I just moved in about a month ago and I rented a renovated apartment. I looked at serveral places in the area and noone else had the size that Somerset offered. The location can't be beat and the price is just right!

A rather unpleasant housing experience.
I wish that I had more positives to share about a place I have called "home" for the last year. Sadly, I cannot. Somerset Lakes is considered a more affordable option for most who are looking to reside in this area. What comes with the lower price tag are a few hassles that should definitely be taken into consideration before signing your name on the lease line. Yes, the apartments are rather spacious...but they are drafty and cold in the winter. Yes, there is parking...one spot per unit--all others must park further away in an area by some dumpsters. Yes, there is a rather incompetent office staff that will talk over you when you voice your concerns, will bad mouth you to other staff and residents, will lose important paperwork, and will CONSISTENTLY tell you INCONSISTENT information about policies and procedures. To mention a positive: the maintenance staff has been great about coming out in a timely manner. No, I'm not happy with my experience at Somerset Lakes. Would I recommend it to a friend? Unless you want to sign up for a year of hassles, stay away.

Terrible neighbors can erase all of the positives of living at Somerset Lakes -- beautiful setting, large apartments -- and unfortunately some of those people live at Somerset Lakes.

Keep Looking, Better Options are Out There!
I wanted to like this apartment complex, I really did! So maybe the building's a bit old, that's okay 'cause there's a beautiful lake nearby. Maybe the parking is insufficient, but the location seems so great. Maybe the staff and service could be better, but the...well, there's not much to off-set this negative As a business professional who works in Indy, I was originally excited to live in the seemingly quaint Somerset Apartments. But, please head my warning, and that of other reviewers, and reconsider renting here. The perceived benefits are at times a mirage and the negatives will continue to grow until you start counting down the days until you can get out of your lease. From what I can tell from the various web reviews, many former tenants end up taking legal action against this place after being hit with very high move-out bills or sub-standard living conditions. The potential stress and financial frustrations caused by the unprofessional management is just not worth it! In conclusion, I would recommend taking pen to paper and crossing this apartment off the consideration list. You'll be glad you did.

Home Sweet Home
I moved into the Somerset Lake apartments year 2003, I was 46 years old, and loved them but decided to move out in 2007 to buy a condo that I also loved. I missed the lakeviews, the quietness of the community, watching the senior citizens walk the community excersising and feeling safe, the loved and caring recieved by Cris Harding the office manager and her staff so I decided to sell my condo on the westside of town and moved back. I was greeted by Cris with open arms. Let me assure you I AM NOT an employee at Somerset, I am honestly a resident. I moved into a 2 bedroom den but when my daughter moved out I no longer needed that much space, so I did'nt leave them I only transferred into a smaller apartment, actually the same one I use to live in, how about that. The maintenance staff here are fantastic, Earl and Joe do a marvelous job and are quick to get things done in a timely manner. The company has done a lot up updates to beautify the community. We now have a new fitness center that I need to visit more often :), the tennis court and basketball court is new, the grounds are kepted up, but don't take my word for it just chose a sunny day and ride through to see for yourself. I will make this my home for as long as I can.

Lived here 11 years.
I am in my 30s and have lived here ever since moving to Indianapolis. I do not work for Somerset Lakes and am quick to complain to them when I have a problem so I consider myself fairly unbiased. There is a reason I have lived here for 11 years and it is because the good far outweighs the minor issues. I was not happy when we were told to take trash to the dumpsters and expressed that concern. To their credit, they solved the issue with a new service that allows me to put my trash outside my apartment and someone comes to get it- much better than what we have had for the past few years so I am more than pleased. I think the main problem here is with some of the residents. People who complain about one parking space per apartment- BUY A CARPORT. They are $25 a month and if you are putting more than one person in an apartment and sharing rent, you should be able to afford it. If you can't, perhaps you should live in a cheaper place, or you can walk down to the places with lots of unmarked spaces and park there. Yes, I have had ants- and they sent out an exterminator immediately. My brother has had ants in his $300,000 condo. The maintenance staff is really nice to me and Darlene and Chris have been here for years and have been great with my complaints. I won't be moving until I leave the city or decide my days of renting are over and it is time to buy. I would highly recommend the place to anyone (well anyone who can live here without needing 3 roommates!)

Blue gil and Cat and Bass oh my!
Somerset Lakes has been my apartment home for 9 years but the newest amenity recently added just puts even more icing on the Somerset Lake Cake. A trash service that furnishes a lovely white basket and all the have to do is place it outside your door three times a week and mysteriously the trash disappears in the night you bring the basket back into your apartment until the next schedule pick up.Trash that seemingly empties itself. Trash that seemingly empties itself, a lake so clear you can see the fish swim by....get your own apartment I'm keeping this one.

I'll start with the positives: Great location & quiet for the most part. Now for the negatives: I have lived here for a long time now and maintenance and office staff has NEVER been as horrible as they are now. Poor communication between office staff and maintenance. For the past year, the maintenance staff takes weeks and weeks to come fix something. Excuses, excuses and more excuses are the new norm at the apt. office as to why it takes so long for maintenance to come. The excuses have been the same for the past year and range anywhere from the maintenance is short staffed, there's been too many emergencies, someone's on vacation or the sun is simply not high enough in the sky. The new maintenance supervisor is no good, either. He obviously has no idea how to operate the truck that has a snow plow on it and does a shoddy job at snow removal and doesn't even plow the parking areas, even when there are no vehicles present in the parking areas. The office fires the old maintenance supervisor, who did an impeccable job at snow removal and replace him w/ a new maintenance supervisor who is lazy and has no clue what he's doing. And, to top things off, my rent is increasing the most it ever has and for what???? For services that are supposed to be included in my rent that get done half way or not even done at all and for living in the exact same apartment, with no improvements. But, hey, Glick has to match up everyone's rent to the market rate, right?? Glick must not have quite enough money yet, right?? Note to Glick: You can smooth my response over with words all you want, but I will tell you I am NOT the only resident that feels this way. ACTIONS SPEAK A LOT LOUDER THAN WORDS!!!!!

big hassle
Parking - Only one assigned spot and they don't clear streets in winter. When they do clear them, they pile snow banks behind all parking spots. This winter, my bumper popped off my car because the snow bank was so big to get into any parking spot. Noise - Occasional noise from neighbors and hooligans having a late night. But honestly the noise from the geese will keep you sleepless. HONK! Grounds - Fine. Sometimes neighbors don't clean up dog poop. Safety - Occasional car break-ins and one recent pedophile alert posted regarding someone trying to lure children into their car.... Construction - Roof leaks and windows are non-existent. I might as well have holes in my walls. Microwave is ancient. Maintence - When my roof leaked, they they told me to let it leak and they would wait until it was dry to paint over i.e. my room smelled moldy and it dripped all the time and i had to move all my clothes out of that closet and the room was unusable. It took 6 weeks. When baby spiders came in the non-existent windows to hatch, I had to call maintence 5 times to spray. It's the same way with any repair. Staff - Constantly lie and put you off. They also like to charge you for things that you don't owe for. They keep no records and like to lose your packages.

A Great Place to Live
I really like leaving here - I've only been here a short time but so far so good. Yes, living off the water you are going to experience a high volume of ants and spider but maintenance had an exterminator out right away and since then I have had no problems. It's very peaceful and the neighbors are nice and respectable. Contrary to what I've read - It's a great place to leave. My washer and dryer is brand new, the office staff is quite pleasant and maintenance has answered all of my few calls.

Dont Move Here! BEWARE!!
Somerset Lakes Apartments are horrible!! The apartments are old, we have had leaking under the carpets, toliets not working, and infestation of ants and spiders in the summer just to mention a few problems. The apartment above , every time, she took a shower, our shower ceiling start to leak and drop and began to cave in. It was not safe! We recently moved out due to all the maintenence issues. They are now trying to charge us for ew carpeting. At the pre inspection, I was told that everything looked good, we cleaned that whole apartment. Now, we get a letter, saying they are charging us $994.00 for new carpeting and clean up. That is absurd! If we have to go to court over this we will. This is crazy. We put up with this crap for three years and I even had to call the Corporate office concerning the maintenence issues. That same day, they came out, but not since then. They are tring to charge us to remodel that apartment. I think not. Plus, the break ins of the apartments was getting too much. I was afraid. I am glad that we were able to move out of this hell hole! That Darlene and Christine is prejudice as well against certain races. I called several times regarding people parking in my spot and the noisey neighbors upstairs. I was told there was nothing they could do about it. Please reconsider if you are thinking about moving here. You will regret it!! Oh the parking is horrible, wven with a paid carport spot, people will park in your spot and when you call the office to report it, they will do nothing. They told me, they can not police the parking, even if it was a paid carport. So wrong!! Again.. BEWARE!!!

Fed Up!!!
I have given Somerset Lakes a poor rating in the past and unfortunately, I have another one to add. We recently moved out of these apartments after a one-year lease. The day prior to move out, I noticed an unpleasant sewage smell in the apartment but could not find the source. On the move out day, we discovered that a large corner of the living room carpet was soaking wet and smelled like sewage. This was not the first time this had happened. I notified management; they thanked us and said they would take care of it. A few weeks later, we received a $1000.00 bill for the replacement of the living room carpet due to pet stains/odor ! The bill also states that we will be turned over to a collection agency if we do not pay. Of course, we do not intend to pay this trumped up bill and plan to fight it in court. Our former landlord in South Bend, IN as well as our movers has told us that they will gladly testify on our behalf should we go to court. We have had a miserable experience at these apartments and have regretted our decision to move here from day one. I feel a great injustice has been done here and do not want this to happen to another current of future resident. I ask that anyone who has had an unpleasant experience at this apartment complex run by the AIMCO Corporation to express your grievances on apartmentratings.com in order to bring down its rating. I would also like to hear from past, present and future tenants of Somerset Lakes apartments of Indianapolis, IN. I have set up an email account specifically for this purpose: fedupII@hotmail.com You and I must take action if we are to put an end to corrupt business practices. I will continue to keep you posted on the progress of this matter so that you may make an informed decision as to whether or not it is worth your while to rent here.

OK, so I am not one to strictly complain people on web postings, in fact, I much prefer to give kudos. Living in this apartment complex, however, has given me enough reason to post on this site about my displeasure. Yes, the apartments are quite large. Yes, it is nice to be close to Castleton and Nora and yes, the general grounds are nice. Other than that, there is no reason to live here. The rent is too much and goes up insanely after your first lease, instead of staying at an acceptable rate. We have lived here since August of 2007 and are signed a 2nd year lease against our better judgement. The maintenance staff is OK, however, the apartments are NOT updated and have issues that are system wide and require major renovation the complex/mgmt company refuses to do. These are old apartments and need new wiring. >1/2 of our plugs don't work, spark when you plug them in, or are so dirty (wires and all) that we feel we could easily come home to a burned down apartment. In addition, the appliances are ancient. Our built in microwave is only 650 watts and the dishwasher never puts out a clean load of dishes. When we discussed with the management about replacing these, they came, did some tests and said they worked fine and refused to replace them. Meanwhile, you can put a bag of popcorn in the microwave and in 6 minutes it isn't even 1/2 popped. Parking here is ridiculous. One spot per apartment with like 2 extra parking spaces available per 8 apartments. That means people are parking all over the sides of the road and blocking the drive way. Now, for the rough part. There are gates to the complex, implying a safe/secure neighborhood. Since we moved in, these gates have NEVER worked properly and they are a hinderance because only one had a keypad, so if you don't have a clicker, you are up a creek. When the gates are broken, they get left open, often for weeks at a time (the "main" gate is open ALL DAY-really secure when there is an open entry all day). Recently, our apartment was robbed in the middle of the day, during which the "main gate" was open as usual and the gate closest to our apartment was broken and wide open. Others in our building were held up at gun point; in response to this (which was not the first robbery in the quarter) the apartment complex held a neighborhood watch meeting. A NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MEETING. No true fixing of the gates, no changing the exterior doors to locked entryways, no security cameras...NOTHING despite us, as victimized people asking for it. Instead, we were directed to install our own individual security systems (of course we'd do that in an APARTMENT) and make sure we knew our neighbors and called in anything suspicious. Yeah, like that is going to help. Then, when we asked to be let out of penalties on our lease if we were able to find a house, we were told, Nope, "our safety isn't your responsibility, so you still would have to give 60 days and pay 2 months as penalty." And to get that information from them, it took like 3 months to get any response from the ridiculous, unprofessional management. Truthfully, the complete lack of response from management has infuriated me more than anything. I e-mailed the manager to discuss our concerns after we were robbed and NEVER received a response from her. Instead, she forwarded my e-mail to another renter in the community (the head of the neighborhood watch, mind you) who then called me. I felt completely violated that she passed my information on and then didn't even have the good sense to call me herself. Recently, I spoke to her in person, at which pooint she said she would get back to me in 2 business days. 2 weeks later, I had to e-mail her and threaten to talk to the property mgmt to get a response from her. Overall the worst apartment manager I have ever dealt with. Truly-rent somewhere else. There is more to type, but I can't fit it all in this posting. Also, I would avoid AIMCO properties, which is the mgmt of this complex.

Big Mistake
We moved here in January. I fell in love with the breathtaking lake views. Our first night here was just a prelude of things to come. We were awakened in the middle of the night by the sounds of cars honking and police helicopters with their search lights on. There must have been at least fifty cars packed with rowdy teens from a party that had gotten out of control. We were scared to death and seriously questioned our decision to move here. We chose Somerset because they are "pet friendly". Watch where you step however, residents don't typically pick up after their dogs and management doesn't enforce the policy! We also have new neighbors above us with small children who run through their apartment making unbelievable noise until 11-12:00pm on week nights! They take showers at 11:30 at night and do their laundry at 10pm! What was the managements response to our complaint? "I'ts not our problem. Learn to live with their neighbors!" We are counting the days until our lease is up!

I agree with the Big Brother mentality here
I lived here '05-'06, and felt the cons outweighed the pros. The only thing I missed was the large size of the apartments. Management and neighbors are very nosey and will spy on you. If you so much as have to leave dog poop to run back to your apartment to get a dog poop bag the neighbors are reporting you to the management and they leave a nasty letter on your door. Or if the kids leave their bikes in front while they are out playing with each other, nasty letter. They took forever to get the pool open, and then made you show member cards, and if the lifegaurds didn't show up they didn't open the pool. You can't leave your teenagers there for one minute, if you need to go back to your apartment for a little while, they kick your kids out. The gate is an inconvienence for your visitors. They only put the gate in back when the walmart was built. They wanted to jack my rent up by a hundred bucks a month when renewal came up, then hosed me on the move out, didn't get any of my deposit back, charged ridiculously for the littlest thing. They charge you way too much for things they shouldn't, like light bulbs and verticle blind slats. Mostly there are alot of paranoid seniors living here.

I am a current resident of Somerset Lakes. I have been here for 4 years and I can only say that it is the best place to be. I have lots of room, great neighbors, excellent grounds, Darlene is the best and you're not going to find a better place to rent with this amount of space.

Identical Posts
Check it out. The 5/10/2004, and the 9/6/2007 postings are verbatim. Either there is one disgruntled resident making these posts, or those who bitterly complain are fond of plagiarism. Somerset Lakes has been maligned. This is truly a fine apartment community. Sure, as with any apartment community, particularly one that has undertaken recent renovation, there will be maintenance issues. However, you will find that they are quickly resolved. I was struck at the comments about cantankerous, elderly neighbors. Perhaps the problem is not with them. Somerset Lakes is a great place to live because there is a wide diversity of people who live here. If you think the earth, moon, and stars revolve around you, then Somerset Lakes is not the place for you.

Absolutely LOVE Somerset!!!
I have been a Somerset Resident for a little over 2 years. I life guarded at the pool for 6 years during H.S. and while attending Indiana University in Bloomington. I absolutely LOVE living here and I am 26 years old. The 4 other tenants in my building are over the age of 60 and I couldn t be happier or luckier. I m greeted every morning before I leave for work and when I get home at night by my neighbor below me who waves to me from his office window! My roommate and I have gotten to know quite a few people around us all in our age range. There is definitely a mix of residents but if you are even remotely social you will meet other people. If you are looking for a college type atmosphere you WON T find it here .maybe it s time to grow up a bit and learn to enjoy your surroundings! Rent is a tiny bit on the higher end therefore the residents are more of the working class upper-scale type who stay busy. You get what you pay for. I have had friends and acquaintances from 20 years old to grandparent age over and every single one has been awe struck by the square footage, lake view, storage/closet space, and over all appearance of the community. When I work out I feel safe running around the community and the surrounding condos. AND the monon is just around the corner in Nora! The pool over looks a beautiful lake where else in Indy are you going to find that! The office staff is extremely friendly and more then willing to help and accommodate you if you need anything. All you need to do is ask! My experience with the maintenance staff has been remarkable. If I call and need something fixed they either come that day or first thing the next morning depending on how urgent the request is. They even went above and beyond their duties to install custom blinds into my dinning room window! Management has also tried to assemble different and fun activities for all age ranges; pool parties, purse parties, girls nights, card games, movie nights, yoga, pilates, canoeing, Holiday parties, even a casino boat trip. Half of the activities do very well. Unfortunately, it s difficult to get any of the young residents to get involved but at least management tries to involve EVERYONE. Please take it from me Somerset is a great place to live! Located 15-20 minutes from downtown Indy, 10 minutes to Broad Ripple ($10 cab ride home from the bars!), and two malls within 5 minutes away! You can t please everyone ALL the time and unfortunately some folks might have had a bad experience (but that could be said with all the other apartment communities around Indy). Then there are the residents who absolutely love living at Somerset and some who have lived here and called it home for 10 plus years! It is what you make it and to me this is where I call home!

Four Seasons
In the spring the white blossoms on the many trees leading to the gazebo on the edge of the lake leads a person to day dream and forget all cares. In the summer the Olympic size pool, slow moving pontoons, paddle boats moving only by someones enthusiasm and the fisherman pulling in their catch take me back home again. In the winter the frozen lake with the snow blowing across sends me right into a hot bowl of chili then out to the garden hill to build a snowman, a bonfire and hot chocolate. In the fall the red and gold colored trees make me lazy, I just want to float slowly across the lake and enjoy the peace and quiet of Somerset Lake. then the sun sets in a beautiful orange haze telling me NO RAIN! A five year resident, you couldn't pull me away with a team of horses.

Great Place to Live
Overall: I have been living here for two years and I recently signed my lease for the third year. I plan on staying here for a long time. This is my third apartment community I have lived in since I moved to Indianapolis 15 years ago. By far, Somerset Lakes is the best of them. Amenities: If you like boating, fishing, or just being on a lake, you will love Somerset Lakes. Yeah, and I know this is a shock, geese and ducks are attracted to water. So, if you are looking for a pristine, sanitized place with no hint of duck doo, you are out of luck. If you like gardening, there is what I would guess, a 2-3 acre area set aside for gardens -- vegetable and flower. In the same area here is also a fire pit where residents often congregate on the weekend evenings. There is a decent size swimming pool, and although the exercise room is not large, it beats paying a gym membership. There are several activities, too, some of which are geared toward older residents, which brings me to my next point. Residents: Most residents are professional or retired. This is not the place for someone who wants to party, but it is ideal for everyone else. Here are my immediate neighbors: a couple in their 30's with no children, a couple in their 20's with two children, a woman in her 70's, and a man in his 80's who still works! I am disturbed with comments from people who did not want to live near older people. Try this: get to know your neighbors, let them know when you are having a party, and then invite them. I'm in my 40's -- in between the age of the previous poster (20's) and the elderly residents. I rankle at the suggestion or mere hint that elderly people should move out if they disagree or otherwise can't get along with someone much younger than themselves. Marginalizing an entire group of people is just plain wrong. Management: The manger, assistant manager, and maintenance supervisor and helpful and approachable. They apply the rules fairly and consistently. I was surprised to read a few acerbic, nasty remarks about them. They are professional, efficient, and just plain nice. Staff: The maintenance crew has very low turnover. Most have been here for several years. They are quick to respond. The only time I had to wait more than 24 hours for a repair request was when they were short-staffed due to illness. The leasing agents have a quicker turnover, but I have yet to find one who was not friendly and willing to help. Safety: I suspect this is the safest apartment complex in Indianapolis. Of course, it is not crime-free, but the crime rate is very low. The neighborhood is ranked 190 out of 213 neighborhoods for safety, meaning it is among the 10% of the safest neighborhoods in Marion County. Go to the Indystar homepage -- indystar.com. At the top of the left column you will see "Indy911." Click on this and look for the link to the crime database. Obviously, no area is crime free, but you will see there are very, very few incidents in Somerset Lakes. Quality of Buildings: Last year all the roofs were replaced and more than half of the buildings had their old siding removed and new siding put on. From what I understand, by next summer all the construction will be completed. At times, the construction has been noisy, but the buildings look much better. I lived in a comparable sized apartment before moving here, and I found my electric bill lower here than at the old place. The only time I hear my neighbors is when I am in the room near the front door and the exterior door opens. On occasion I have heard music from my neighbors, but that is unusual. Grounds: The grounds are well maintained. Litter is picked up quickly. Many residents, including myself, put out potted plants and baskets during the spring and summer. Some residents do a wonderful job of decorating for the holidays. Parking: Each unit has one assigned space, but if you have more than one car, carports and garages are available. I have not had a problem when I have guests, as many as 10, come over. As long as they do not park overnight, parking on the curb is ok. Trash: There are only two locations for the dumpsters, which can be awkward at times. However, if you don t want to take your trash to a dumpster, twice a week you can leave it near the curb and it will be picked up.
