Buy a condo, don't rent here
And use the public bike path next to this complex for free. It runs along the Belmont Slough.

Cheap construction
Very thin walls and ceilings. The leasing person said they were built to condo spec, but that may not have been true, because sound travels freely between the rental units, whether it's babies crying, people having sex, couples arguing, etc.

Requests for maintenance ignored
No matter how many voice mails you leave, the office staff ignores them. It's just understood that voice mail is a useless communications tool when dealing with these individuals. You have to take time off work to walk into their office and speak to one of them face-to-face about your maintenance request. That shouldn't be necessary, but it is.

BAD PLACE
THIS COMPLEX IS PRETTY BUT OLD. MANAGEMENT IS CRAZY AND ACTUALLY FEEL THEY HAVE A HANDLE ON THINGS. THE ACTUAL MANAGER IS A B**** WHO THINKS SHE IS TOO GOOD TO SPEAK TO THE RESIDENT. I HAVE NEWS FOR HER MY RENT PAYS YOUR SALARY

I don't live there and I never will
I have to say that I would never rent at Schooner Bay. The property has great potential but the management is ridiculous. Who do they have in that office leasing apartments? She was so unpleasant that we couldn't even finish the tour. She had no customer skills was telling us her personal business. They might have a chance if they look at who is dealing with potential renters. We were leaving the place and wondering what the hell had just happened. Was that woman for real?

RIP OFF
AFTER READING ALL THESE REVIEWS ABOUT SCHOONER BAY, I REALIZE I AM NOT ALONE. I ONLY WISH I KNEW ABOUT THIS SITE BEFORE I MOVED HERE.

FIRST OFF I AGREE WITH ALL WHO SAY THIS PLACE IS WAY TO EXPENSIVE. IN AN ECONOMY WHERE MARKET RENTS ARE GOING DOWN, SCHOONER BAY FEELS THERE COMPLEX IS SO GREAT THAT THEY SHOULD INCREASE RENT. WHAT THEY DON´T KNOW IS IF YOU DO GO SHOPPING YOU WILL FIND BRAND NEW COMPLEXES WITH THE SAME DEALS IF NOT BETTER. THERE ARE TWO BRAND NEW APART. COMM. IN THE AREA THAT ARE BEAUTIFUL AND OFFER GREAT SPECIALS.

SCHOONER BAY MAKES YOU BUY RENTERS INSURANCE WHETHER YOU WANT TO OR NOT. THAT IS ANOTHER EXTRA COST YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER ALONG WITH THE USUAL WATER AND GARBAGE.

THE MANAGEMENT IS IMPOSSIBLE AND RUDE. THE ACTUAL PROPERTY MANAGER IS NEVER AROUND AND WILL NEVER SPEAK TO YOU BECAUSE SHE IS ALWAYS BUSY. SOME OF THE STAFF IS DECENT BUT REALLY CAN NOT HELP YOU UNLESS THE MANAGER MAKES THE FINAL DECISION.

THIS PLACE IS JUST THE PITTS. THE APARTMENTS ARE OLD AND MOLDY. THE WALLS ARE VERY THIN, AND THE APARTEMENTS ARE DARK AND AND GLOOMY.

I WOULD THINK TWICE BEFORE SIGNING THAT LEASE......

RUDE/ DISHONEST MANAGEMENT
LET THE CONSUMER BEWARE.... THIS PLACE IS NOT ALL WHAT IT SEEMS TO BE. WHEN YOU FIRST MOVE IN THE OFFICE STAFF IS MORE THAN WILLING TO PROMISE YOU THE MOON AND THE STARS TO GET YOU TO SIGN THE LEASE! BUT WHEN YOU MOVE IN IT IS A WHOLE OTHER STORY.
THESE APARTMENTS ARE OLD, DARK, AND NEED A LOT OF WORK BUT ARE LOCATED IN A NICE AREA NEXT TO THE WATER. THE ONLY PLUS IS THERE IS A GREAT WALKING TRAIL IF YOUR HAVE PETS. THE SERVICE IS EXTREMLY AWFUL. IF AN APPLIANCE BREAKS THEY WILL NEVER REPLACE IT. I WAS LEFT ONE WEEK WITHOUT A WASHER BECAUSE THEY WERE WAITING FOR PARTS.. THERE IS TONS OF ANTS AND MOLD NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU CLEAN.
MANAGEMENT IS RUDE AND WILL ALWAYS MAKE EXCUSES WHY SERVICE DOES NOT GET DONE.I AGREE WITH THE REST OF THE VIEWERS, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO TAKE ANY CONCERNS TO THE MANAGER SHE IS NEVER AROUND AND IS ALWAYS IN MEETINGS.
WHEN OUR LEASE WAS UP I WAS TOLD THAT I HAD TO SIGN ON FOR AT LEAST SIX MORE MONTHS TO GET OUR OLD RATE. THIS IS THE FIRST COMPLEX I HAVE EVER LIVED AT THAT RAISES PRICES AFTER YOU HAVE COMPLETED YOUR INTIAL YEAR. WE ARE VERY GOOD RESIDENTS, ALWAYS PAID ON TIME, AND WE WERE REWARDED BY GETTING A HUGE INCREASE OF ABOUT $150 FOR A MONTHLY RATE. NORMALLY I WOULD SIGN A 6 MONTH LEASE BUT THERE WAS A CHANCE I WAS GOING TO BE RELOCATED AT MY JOB. SO BASICALLY I WAS LEFT WITH NO OPTIONS. I AM LEAVING SCHOONER BAY AND I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. THE MARKET AND ECONOMY IS GOING DOWN THERFORE RENTS SHOULD TOO. THIS COMPANY IS VERY IGNORANT! IF THEY JUST DID THEIR HOMEWORK THEY WILL FIND THAT THERE IS TONS OF COMPETITION WHO WILL ACCOMIDATE MY NEEDS.
MY ADVICE TO ALL IS SHOP SHOP SHOP. THERE IS A LOT MORE APARTMENTS WHO HAVE NICER UNITS WITH BETTER DEALS. REALLY THINK TWICE BEFORE SETTLING HERE. I WOULD NOT ADVISE ANYONE TO LIVE HERE.

Poor value
Other places my husband and I have lived were priced at market rate. Schooner Bay is about 50% over market rate. In addition to the inflated rent, tenants have to pay for their own garbage, water and sewer. Who knows what fees management will pass along next.

Very thin ceilings and walls, and lots and lots of ants that are impossible to get rid of.

The office staff will try their best not to do anything for tenants. It takes a personal visit, as they ignore phone messages.

With rents this high for such poor value, and interest rates so low, it´s better to buy a condo instead of making Schooner Bay´s owners richer.
can´t ask for much more in foster city(two thumbs up)
My husband and I are enjoing living at Schooner Bay. We have a apartment near the pond and have a very quiet surrounding. The management and maintenance has always been prompt about returning our calls right away unlike other properties we´ve lived at in Foster City. Neighbors are very friendly and parking is great. I´d definetely recommend this place to any one looking in Foster City.

Happy Camper
I´ve lived at Schooner Bay for about 4yrs now and I´m really happy. If I could buy into my condo I would. The office staff has changed a lot since I have been here, but I have never had a bad experience with anyone. I was really suprised by reading some of these other comments other people have written. I know all my neighbors and they have been here for a while also and seem to be happy.

Unsecure
If you are looking for security, privacy, etc. this is not the place for you.

I was sleeping soundly, and when I awoke, (I sleep in the nude) I heard noises in the other room, it was the maintenance men - they simply allow themselves to enter whenever they want.

I was caught three times, taking a shower, and bath - walking out of the bathroom with very little on, if anything at one time, there they were staring at me and I couldn´t believe this was happening again and again to me.

They do not give you warning when they are going to be there, if they are even suppose to be there!

They sometimes knock once and if you are awake and can hear their knock, before you can get dressed and to the door, they are already in your apt.

They have let themselves into my apt. with the excuse that I requested repairs - I did not request repairs!
Terrible Management
- Property manager treats residents as trash (no exaggeration).
- Emergency phone number doesn´t work when leaking from upstairs.
- They took action on leak 3 days later.
- Leasing office staffs don´t even answer the telephone.
- They prohibit using garage door opener.
- Garage is stinky.
- Everything is old (built in 1980´s).
- Garbage disposer sometimes upflow.

DON´T MOVE HERE!
Not worth place to live in
We´ve been staying in these apartments since nearly a year. Externally, the apartment looks great.. but when you enter in, you see all flaws. The gadgets and carpet are so old that the management doesn´t bother to replace them for years.Though you give a complain about any repairs to be done, they give you a temporary solution. The management is very bad and cunning. After your lease term, if you want to stay on a month to month basis they increase your rent by $500 to $600( the initial rent itself is expensive here). That is highly RIDICULOUS!!!!!!! Haven´t heard of such thing elsewhere..

Poor Management, Facilities just OK
This property looks ok at first glance. Then you get to know the management team. What a bunch of uneducated, unethical and and unorganized people. Don´t live here if you want a satelite, they´ll make you regret it. Not only were we allowed to install a satelite when we moved in, they encouraged it. Now, they are saying that we must leave the premises if we do not remove the satelite. Every lease we signed said "no satelite" but they assured us it was no problem. No, they say we are inviolation of our lease. The turn around in the management office is crazy - you won´t recognize people from month to month. I´ve been there 4 years and this is my last! Good Riddance Schooner Bay - YOU SUCK!

Stay away- this place is a trap - an obnoxious trap!
I have been the best tenant they could wish for but have received nothing more than bad treatment from the management. The maintainance workers as well the office staff are nice, but the management is unhelpful and will treat you like sh***. I have already had problems with the new manager who will only officially start next week. Lots of tenants have been getting threatning letters the last week for complying with the "old Management" rules, which apparently are now wrong...
DO YOURSELF A FAVOR - STAY CLEAR FROM THIS PLACE!!!!

Overall not very positive
Where to begin,

I lived in the 2 bedroom townhouse for 5 years and have a some experiences I would like to share.

First off, I choose Schooner Bay because they were the only place in close to my work that took pets over 30lbs. They do have a very liberal pet policy and that is a good thing considering how most places have a 20lb limit.

Having moved in prior to the run-up in housing costs my first rent was $2050 per month. It was subsequently raised 10% per year during the boom but ONLY if I signed a year lease. Of course that turned out to be a good thing considering that in 2000 they were charging $3500-$3700 for the 2 bedroom townhouse. My final rent was below $2000 the last year I was there. It was nice to actually pay that price after watching so many people get gouged.

As for the actual quality of the units, it is obvious that the complex is a cash cow for the company that runs it. Most of the units have had NOTHING updated since they were constructed in 1986. This includes but is not limited to:
Lighting fixtures, hot water heaters, washer/dryers, cutting boards in kitchen, stove/oven, faucets, plumbing, screens, and the carpet is NOT replaced at 5 year intervals as recommended. In regards to the hot water heater, mine failed and dumped the tank into my living room after having been in service for 15 years. The maintanence person who fixed it said they knew that specific model was prone to failure after 10 years.

Getting someone to address maintanence issues was a hit or miss proposition. Several requests to fix the washer/dryer unit were not acted upon until I had some ´face´ time with the staff, several calls were needed before someone would spray for ants, issues with vermin were frequently met the response "we are near wildlife areas" and last but not least if there was work to be done in the units or on the exterior of the units, residents were lucky to get 24 hour notice. On several occasions when work was scheduled, it was not carried out at the scheduled time and the residents were never informed. This happened with the re-sealing of the patios.

The exterior windows were not cleaned during my entire stay, the grass was consistently overwatered making it impossible to walk, sit, run, or otherwise enjoy, residents consistently speed thru the parking lot at 30-40 MPH, and residents cats had the run of the complex and your cars hoods, roofs, etc.

The staff had turned over completely at least 4 times during my stay. At best the staff was apathetic. At worst, downright hostile. Calls were not returned, messages not relayed, and on more than one occasion, the staff blamed me for maintenence issues that were the result of age/poor quality.

Overall I think this is about slightly below average compared to other places I have rented from.

Schooner Bay should take ´Luxury´ out of the title, charge a bit less, and begin a serious upgrade from their mid 80s´ decor.

Foster City is a safe, quiet, well managed place to live but Equity Property Management(www.eqrworld.com) is obviuosly more concered with profits than with service. They manage Schooner Bay, Lantern Cove, Creekside in San Mateo, Southwood in Palo Alto, as well as Briarwood and Arbor Terrace in Sunnvale.

If you are going to pay more than $1600 per month in rent, I would recommend steering clear of Equity Properties. There are newer complexes that offer more at comparable price.

Deceptive Management Practices
The complex engages in deceptive and arbitrary business practices. For example, they did not provide me a copy of the lease until AFTER I signed a "term sheet" that references the lease. That is, they shove a paper for you to sign without letting you know what you are signing until after the fact. In addition, although they have garage door openers, they did not tell me in advance that these openers do not have remote controls until after the term sheet has been signed.

Incredibly, they state that they do not allow tenants to install and maintain garage door openers at their own expense. Their reasons: (1) Garage door openers are loud and disturb the tenant using the opener; and (2) garage door openers tend to break garage doors!

Thin walls
This is a lousy place. The walls and ceiling are so thin, you can hear your neighbors tinkle
and flush the toilet. Also had some long, thin red worms crawl in from around the sliding glass door into the bed room, which was gross. You should look elsewhere.

One of the worst places to live in foster city
We have been here now for a yr and are moveing as fast as we can the lack of responce from the office staff is enough to drive someone crazy. And dont tick anyone off down there or your rent suddenly gets raised now you may think Im just trying to get even for our bad experiences but you would be wrong. example... I called the office the other morning started calling around 10am called till about ten till 11 finally I went to the office and the two office girls are having coffie as the phone is ringing and just letting the answering machine pic it up. We have had very bad problems with ants and rodents our boxes in the storage unit are all eaten up(let me add that we kept no food in the boxes we stored as the question was asked us by the management)time and time again we asked for help and time and time again we got none the trick they use when you ask for something to be fixed is they fill out a slip for one thing then put the rest of the problems on a sticky note so that if there ever caught they can say that they only knew about one problem how do I know this? it was done right infront of my face while I stood in the office. My neighbors were great with the same problems and have also moved. you can hear everything in the apt from the neighbors the walls are paper thin. my biggist complaint is that the staff is all cookies and cream till you sign the lease but once your in forget ever getting help the bridges and little lakes are not worth the headachs you have to endure all the appreation little things they do is not worht it to us my recomendation for what its worth STAY AWAY. RUN SOMEWHERE ELSE DONT WALK RUN

Suggestions?
Instead of just complaining about how bad these apartments are and telling us that we´re better off elsewhere, how about offering some suggestions as to which other apartments are worth considering? It doesn´t help too much when most of the apartment reviews for this area tell you to live elsewhere.

Worst Ever Office Staff and Overpriced
The office staff at this complex is inexperienced with handling anything major, inefficient, rude, sarcastic, condescending, snotty, and downright ------! Oh, but if the manager should be around, all of a sudden they are sugar-sweet. How fake and disgusting. It should be a crime the way they treat tenants. This place has more turnover than a cheap motel. It´s no wonder people are moving out, the rents are staggeringly high, outrageous, especially for the lack of quality here. I mean, it´s not rundown, but it is a far cry from "luxury" which they claim it to be. What´s so luxurious about these old buildings with cheap construction and shabby carpets? Everything mechanical is always out of order, from the whirlpool to the gym equipment. It has been a year, and they still have not fixed the gym equipment!! My god, get it done already. There is never enough parking, and they never clean the outside windows. Ok there is plenty more I could say but I am outa here at the end of the month. In short, the place is decent enough, but not worth the money and if you have to deal with the bimbos in the office, then watch out.

Great place to live!
My husband and I have lived at SchoonerBay for over 15 months now and could not be happier with the location, the apartment we live in or the management and maintenance team.

The apartments are older but are designed really well so you rarely hear your neighbors. The layout works well and we love having nobody living below us.

Any maintenance request has always been addressed and taken care of in a timely manner. The maintenance crew is great to work with and will go out of their way to help out.

Management has been very professional and is always available to discuss any issue we might have. We have dealt with the same person in the office since we moved in which is unusual. Most apartment complexes we’ve lived in, the office staff is constantly changing.

Yes there are ants that make their way into our apartment about twice a year but if you don’t leave food out, keep things clean and put out the ant traps, they usually disappear after a week or so.

We renewed our lease in January and would recommend this complex to anybody. We selected this complex after an extensive search and have not regretted our decision at all.
