I know of at least a dozen tenents who have been evicted after complaining to the management or owners.
I know at least two who were evicted just because they were complaing to other tenents.
Be aware that the SS is alive and well in this building.

One Big Soap Opera
Reading these comments about Aspen Apartments cracks me up all the time. It's obvious that the tenants share the same issue they have a big roach problem. It's obvious that all the positive reviews come from the landlord because all the reviews have the same corny line. I can't wait till renew my lease. I know that the Aspen apartment are not the best, but it's not a disaster area either. It's something about those crummy apartments you like or you would not continue to live under those conditions. If you truly believe that you are living under unlivable conditions and you are paying more than the value of the apartment, then why don't you call the health and welfare inspector? You get what you pay for people. I honestly believe that the condition of Aspen apartments reflect on the rent that your slumlord charges.

Not Bad
I lived here for a year as a geogrpahic bachelor. I rented a studio apartment on the top floor. It wasn't bad. The apartment was in good shape and requests for maintenance were handled wiithin a day or two. The laundry room was kept clean and bugs weren't an issue. While I wasn't happy with having to get a parking pass for guests, I never had a problem getting one for one of the many visits my wife and daughter made. The policy itself was clearly spelled out in the lease. The neigborhood had its seedy areas, but I walked down to the 7-11 almost nightly and was never threatened and only encountered the occasional pan handler. This place is a good example of you get what you pay for. Are there nicer places in Alexandria? Sure. At the same price? Don't think so.

EXCELLENT Opportunity for Crooks to CASH in - NOW
To all the Thieves / Crooks / Bad People:

The Aspen provides an incredible opportunity for you to enter the building past security and 'locked doors.' The outside entrance door with access to the 5th floor (south end of the building) is now COMPLETELY inoperative 100% of the time. The door does NOT latch 10 times out of 10. It has been like this for over 2 weeks now, so no need to rush and be hasty -take the time to plan.

Good luck!

Decent at best
We've lived in the Aspen just over a year. We're not leaving because of the Aspen, but we sure have thought about it.

1)Roaches - since they have changed the exterminator service things are better, but by no means acceptable. We live on a lower floor (meaning between 1 and 6) and roaches emerge from the trash room en masse. Don't live across from the trash room! What is worse is that people smash the roaches on the wall so you have double the number to contend with. They'll crawl into your apartment from under the door and through the walls. It is nasty and no one seems to give a lick.

2) Security - the guards at night are nice enough when you see them. We've never had a security problem, though the back door on the 5th floor rarely locks, the security gates have been up more than they have been down, and there are no security cameras on the front of the right side of the building (don't park there). As for the Section 8 housing - I've lived in worse neighborhoods in worse cities and states. You should have no problems unless you are doing something you shouldn't be doing anywhere else - ie walking around alone at night in a place where you don't belong.

3) Maintenance - we have never had a problem getting maintenance to fix anything. They have been great.

4) Management - we only had problems with the young girl in the front office. We have had great dealings with everyone else. Most problems stem from the way people are treated - and I mean tenants dealing with management and management dealing with tenants. Usually the management's response is in direct correlation with how the tenant approached the problem. This by no means excuses the response, but remember that management are hired by the owners and unless the owners demand better treatment, you can't expect management to be great. Chances are the owners regularly shaft management - remember they are tenants too.

5) Transportation - there are two bus stops, one at the end of Aspen at Russell and one on Mt. Vernon and Commonwealth. The one on Mt. Vernon is much more convenient and city buses run there as well as DASH.

6) Mold - there is mold on the AC as well as in the AC. We asked nicely for them to come and clean it and things have been significantly better since then. It is your apartment, you have to let maintenance know when you need them to do work.

OVerall, if you are looking for a cheaper place to live, this is a pretty decent place. My recommendation is to live on an upper floor, treat people the way you want to be treated and make sure you close the 5th floor door behind you.

It's All Building Owner's fault
The owners of the building are behind the whole mess. They are the one who unleashed the DOG. That's why she treats us like Sh...
The only answer to this, is some kind of Tenents commitee. Maybe then they start paying attention to us tenents and stop treating us like this.

Negitive Posts being delated
Why is it that only Negative posts are delated from this site?
It's obvious that the manager is trying to get them removed.
How about removing some of the posts that are so clearly written by the manager?
It would make for a much better review page.

Once again,The TRUTH about the Aspen
I moved out of the Aspen only 3 months ago, and it is even better than I had expected. I personally don't care if someone is silly enough to move in to this barn (I say better you than me), but there are some outrageous misconceptions about the Aspen written in these reviews, that MUST be spelled out. Sorry if I drone on. (but there is plenty to cover).

-The surrounding area IS dangerous- close to a bunch of Section8 housing. The statement someone wrote "well some homes to the south on Russell Rd are worth over $1M" doesn't mean a damn thing. The nice homes you see immediately when you turn left at bottom of Aspen Rd, don't some how magically balance out the dirty and dangerous Section8 homes that you see immediately when you turn right at bottom of Aspen Rd. The people that live in Section8 housing are dangerous, and of concern no matter how close the nice $1M homes are. Drive by them ANY night after 9pm, and you will see a cop questioning some of them, or have them handcuffed in the back of the car guaranteed.

-The Aspen is NOT conveniently located near public transportation. The nearest metro station is Crystal city which is 2.8 miles on mapquest. There is a bus stop at the bottom of Aspen Road, but no matter where this infrequent bus goes (I see 1 bus on Russell Rd a week if I am lucky), lets all agree that nobody would classify this as convenient public transportation.

-Although it is close by proximity to Crystal City and S. Arlington, it will still take you at least 20 min to get there. This is due to a number of factors: The constant construction on bridge just south of Glebe and on Glebe itself bringing each direction down to 1 lane; The idiotic new timing of the traffic lights on Mt. Vernon that makes you catch every single red light, and; The poor and unreasonably slow driving antics of our latin friends in Section8 area.

-Yes, the immediate area around the Aspen infact is dangerous TOO. There might be a few well to do people who have recently paid $400K to buy one of those junky outhouses along Aspen Rd and Landover St. (-------'es, but probably nice people just trying to pay mortgages, etc.), but there is still the majority of those who have lived in these outhouses for the past 5-10 yrs. , who paid $75 - $100k way back then, who have not gotten around to selling their crappy duplexes just yet- do you suppose these people are the model citizens you would like to have for neighbors? We have all seen the cops visiting the various homes.

-Your car insurance probably WILL go up $200/yr (mine did- on a 00 car worth $6000) once you file change of address. This I learned was b/c the majority of my latin neighbors that live in the Section8 housing do not have car insurance, so I had to pay more incase I get in a wreck with them.

-Someone getting murdered in a room on the 11th floor IS something to worry about. Who gives a rat's --- whether the poor girl knew the murderer - that somehow makes the event safer for you?? This is serious....not sure what else needs to be explained here....

-Security is poor. The back door on 5th floor doesn't latch a third of the time. Do you think that a non-tennant opening an unlatched door at the back looks suspicious enough for the security guard to go persue them? Probably not, especially if he is too busy watching his portable TV in his car parked down by the dumpsters.

-The old bitter manager is a complete idiot - no need to waste your time going into detail on that. Any new tennant will learn that soon enough.

-The heating and cooling vents DO spew out thick dark mold that builds up on the convectors and yes this IS a safety concern. To the women who responded that complaining about the mold is unreasonable- you are an idiot - go read about the dangers of mold. Why would you accept that type of living condition?

-Having to deal with the severe roach infestation (lower 10 floors) IS ACTUALLY unacceptable, and those complaining about it are not unreasonable. To the lady defending the roaches: What kind of filthy, nasty slob are you?!? Why would you be okay with roaches crawling around on you, in you food and nesting in all your stuff? What is wrong with you? 1 in 4 people are illergic to coachroaches (and the things they leave behind like larvee eggs). I bet many tennants have experienced new breathing problems and issues since moving in.
When you go to complain about the roaches, the old nasty manager will tell you that 'no previous tennants in your room ever complained about roaches - maybe you brought them when you moved in'. You will then learn there is a weekly roach spraying appointment you can make for your unit every Monday. Yes, they have a guy come in on a weekly basis. What does that tell you? It also doesn't do much, as I continued to have roach problems after weeks of spraying or whatever he does. I also found that depositing dead roaches in the rent mail slot and under managers office door did not seem to motivate them either.

I will continue to keep copy of this posting incase you decide to delete again - I'll repost it as soon as I can so, no worries.

I'm not surprised to hear about this freak.
The Aspen changes tenents the way most people change their socks. With such high turnover, they have to take what they can get. If we had decent managment, we wouldn't have this problem. Don't forget about the murder in the Aspen, A crack-addicted tenent MURDERED another tenent for her ATM card, so turover definately affects our collective saftey.

Disappointed
There are consistent bug problems if you live on the bottom 5 floors. I spray the outline of the front door about every week and that's helped out a bit. The A/C in the bedroom is a joke and blows out hot air, even after we've had the maintenance guys come in several times to repair it. I've also seen bugs in the market in the lobby so I wouldn't recommend getting any food or snacks there. The pool closes early during the weekdays (7pm)& weekends (8pm).

Great place singles and young families
I have lived at the Aspen for almost four years and really like it. I have lived on two different floors in two different types of apartments and have never had cockroaches. There is always parking and guests can park on the street right outside the parking lot. The pool, gym, and store are great extras that many apartment complexes in the area do not have. The studios are much nicer than similarly priced studios in the area. I always feel safe in the building and parking lot. I can't believe there are so many negative reviews on this site. I highly recommend the Aspen.

I cannot wait to get out of here. This place is so tense that I rather stay at work as long as possible. everytime i have to pass the office, my skin crawls. it is not just roaches or parking problem, no matter wath you ask them, the answer is NO. they just get sick pleasure to treat tenents like inmates. I have an advise for the management. Apply for County jain guard position, and give The aspen tenents No. for reference.

The fires!
I lived on the 16th floor of the Aspen back in 1998-2000. There were at least 4 fires and middle-of-the-night fire alarm calls in that 1 1/2 year period. It was ridiculous! I remember seeing visible damage to hallways, floods coming down the stairs, and a doorway torched. Couldn't wait to leave the "death trap".

Problem starts from above
The problem with this place is the owner(s) of this building. They have unleashed the management to run this place like Auschwitz. The management is very secure that nobody can change anything around this place.
It is sickening to see this kind of attitude in a free country. If you ask me, the mentality of these peaple matches lots of third world countries with no concept of freedom and respect. If you don's care how peaple treat you, you may find this place a great deal. but if you have any self respect stay away from these people.
