I came to visit my friend who recommended living at the Shay, but unfortunately when I told the concierge the name and unit number, her rude and nasty demeanor and subsequent refusal to assist me was enough of a deterrent.

This place is a joke. Do not live here. They hate DC culture. They are trying to go for a chic millennial vibe when really its just tacky and lacking in any style or taste. Young white women have been found PASSED OUT on the furniture near the elevators. SEE ATTACHED PHOTO!

The Shay is a great place to live in. Amenities are always available and clean, it's fun and well decorated, and staff are nice and always available. The move-in process was great, among other things, because the staff was open to help on the day I moved. The place has a permanent concierge so you can be sure you will get your online purchases on time and safely delivered. Shaw is a great place to live in, but mind that is very lively and thus can be a bit noisy! If you're a person that needs quiet all the time, this might not be the place for you. If that is not so much of an issue, you can always find an apartment that doesn't face the street, because the "inside" looking apartments are quite quiet.

The Shay has some great amenities and perks, and the community of residents is very friendly. Common areas are always clean and the cleaning staff is friendly. Management is decently responsive. However, EVERYTHING inside the units breaks. We moved in just over 2 months ago and have submitted nearly 15 maintenance requests. You name it, it has been broken: the A/C, washing machine, freezer/ice maker, outlets, toilet, closet shelf, dishwasher, water pressure, etc. Oh, and we have mice in our unit. Maintenance is quick (usually always comes the next day), but doesn't always fix the problem and something else is broken the next day.

The move in process was super smooth and the staff have been incredibly responsive to and patient with all of my questions. The building and amenities are beautiful and the apartment looked brand new when we moved in. The design and layout are exactly what we were looking for.

My move in was easy and the staff is great. The neighborhood is amazing. The complex is clean and the maintenance staff is responsive and does great work. The amenities are also great. They have a pool and great common areas. I love living at The Shay!

It has been quite interesting. They said dogs are allowed in common areas as long as they are on a leash. Funny part is, actually they arent or the management at The shay is making this new rule after we signed the lease.

I lived at The Shay for 2 years and recently moved out due to high crime in the immediate vicinity of the apartment complex. Overall, my experience was average. **My main points of concern included security and overall quality of the apartments and amenities: -Safety in the immediate vicinity. In the last couple of months of 2018, several people were shot right in front or around the corner of The Shay. Cars are not safe and prone to being broken into if you are using street parking; -For several months in 2018, the parking garage gates of the East side building were broken and anyone was able to access the building via entrances in the garage. Elevators were also broken down for a large part of summer 2018; -Cheap gym equipment (e.g. chest press machine is unstable and moves when used, treadmills did not have much shock absorption, machine TVs do not work, etc.) The quality of the equipment is not comparable to the equipment you find in gyms throughout town (mint, vida, etc.); -No dog friendly amenities, despite some being advertised publicly online (e.g. dog washing station). Dogs are banned from the rooftop. -Cheap quality of units. While I was fortunate to live in a beautiful unit with a patio, I could not justify the rent spent with the quality of apartment. My unit's bedroom was next to the trash chute & I could literally hear trash being dumped at all hours of the day. You can also hear everything happening in the hallways. **The good aspects of living here include: - Awesome community and neighbors. It is a very social building; -You can't beat the convenience of the neighborhood, despite the many security concerns. There are multiple bars, restaurants, pharmacies, etc. within a 1-2 minute walk; -Cool retail stores; -Free compass coffee on weekdays; -Common spaces are nicely furnished and comfortable; -Staff.

Overall my experience has been average. Something, ie the elevator, the garage door is always broken. I really liked the old manager. I have not interacted much with new manager so verdict still out. I really enjoy the location. It's close to transportation, food, lounges, bars.

My experience at the shay has been great thus far - saudia is a true pleasure to work with and the best leasing agent i've ever encountered in an apartment building! she is always very helpful and responsive. the front desk managers, gregory, steven, wendy, etc., as well as the maintenance folks, are a pleasure as well.

The Shay is in a great location with restaurants, bars, shops, pharmacies, etc just a short walk away. The construction of a building right next door has been a pain though. The last 6 months I've had an alarm clock in the form of a jackhammer Mon-Sat at 7am sharp. It's getting better now tho. The building staff is great.

Living at the Shay is Meh- When I first moved in, I would have given the staff at the Shay 5 stars. However, in the 3 years since I have been here we have gone through 3 managers and numerous concierge staff. The constant switch up has made it really hard for longtime residents. The communication is poor, as much gets lost in the constant switch over of management, the professionalism of staff seriously leaves much to be desired and overall the chicness that was once the Shay has faded. It is tiring and extremely frustrating to hear, "I don't know" or "I just got here" and of course, "I am new here." You almost have to train the staff as to what to do, otherwise you may not get your package, groceries or dry cleaning. As far as safety, we have had a resident hauled off by federal agents in the peak hours of the morning, a stabbing and two nearby deaths (a shooting and an overdose). I am from NYC so I get big city crime, but the Shay does little to protect it's residents. Random people often evade the key fob system by walking right past the front desk staff and piggy backing off residents. Unless you intend to aggressively confront someone, you're at a lost when they just follow you into the elevator (of course provided that the elevator is working). The building also has terrible acoustics and sound travel very easily throughout the building. You can hear whatever your neighbors are doing especially the neighbors above and below. There is also a bit of racism/classism present at the Shay. Oddly enough, most of the staff are ethnic people, but they seemed to be coached to jump to concerns of a particular demographic. I recently had a staff member knock on my door well after midnight on a work night to address a noise complaint. I was sleeping. You'd think with the quiet in my apartment they would have held their concern until a more appropriate time-but no. They knocked and knocked some more until I woke up and answered the door. I can tell you complaints in the reverse do not work this way. No Latino or Black resident could get a staff member to knock on a white resident's door after 11 pm unless the noise was audible from the hall. Meanwhile young white privilege residents and non-residents treat the building like a frat house and complaints are minimized and ignored. (see picture or random person past out drunk on property) Honestly, I am over the Shay and will not be renewing my lease.

Not quite happy with the level of professionalism and service provided. There seems to be more crime in the area as well. Alarm goes off every week in the lobby area and stays on for a while. More thefts have occurred as well.

Beautiful location. People watching is a norm here. The kitchens are really nice and everything is in walking distance. The gym here is very well maintained and stocked with plenty of equipment. Management in general are helpful.I enjoy my home here.

I've been here for about three weeks now and overall I'm very happy. Staff are great to work with, nice amenities, and the apartments have nice finishes and appliances. It's a younger vibe in the building so sometimes I hear parties or people in the hallways late at night, and I can hear my neighbor walking around above me, but otherwise it's pretty quiet for being in the middle of everything.

This apartment is great. There were a few hiccups in the beginning when we were signing our lease. We found out that this was due to some staff changes, but the remedied the situation fairly quickly and smoothly. Overall, the building is beautiful and the staff are great.

Shay is a great building and I rarely have problems. Bathroom light was out for days till corrected and I had to get ready in the dark. Unfortunately maintenance was slow to finally correct the light and had to come out multiple times.
