On the plus side, this building is located in a wonderful area of the city. Close to all subway lines, Time Warner Center, Central Park, Theatre district, etc. Another positive is the doormen are all very nice and helpful. Whenever I request that something get fixed in my apartment (i.e. kitchen sink gets clogged up), it is taken care of within a few hours or less. Now for the bad news: Earlier this year, Rose Associates took over the building. Now anyone that lives in a Rose building knows all too well that your rent is going to go through the roof when your lease renewal arrives in the mail, regardless of the economy, the condition of your apartment, or regardless of anything else. Many tenants upon hearing about this in early 2013 all agreed they were going to get screwed over by Rose when their lease is up. Sure enough, I received my lease renewal and they want to raise my rent by almost $500 per month. Completely insane. But I am not at all surprised because that is what Rose Associates is known for. Hating their tenants with a smile. Bottom line is that Carnegie Mews is an okay building in a great area. It is by no means a "luxury rental" building, but the rent is now priced as if it were a luxury building.

I hope you like mice. Had a mouse problem in my very clean apartment for almost two years. They blamed it on me after I complained to the city and sent me a nice letter threatening to evict me. The letter also listed everything they found rummaging thru my garbage cans during their "investigation" and pointed out there were some dishes in my sink. Sorry, can't have breakfast and then go to work...Found out half my floor had a problem with mice. We're on the 7th floor. Amazing. The "exterminator" came and put glue traps down. I watched the mice run around them every night while I watched TV. He sealed off a hole under the sink with plastic. I listened to the mouse chew thru it and two seconds later get caught in the snap trap I set. Also, I hope you like listening to power washers outside at 5:30 on Sat/Sun mornings. I know it's not the buildings fault, but still, it's a con of living here. Also, the door men, while generally polite, couldn't give a half a care in the world if you have any problem. In 4 years I've had at least 6 or 7 issues while doing laundry. Usually with a dryer, so that's nice that I get stuck with a load of wet clothes after wasting $ on the drying machine. At least the refund check comes pretty quick. Also had my laundry basket stolen and was told that the cameras didn't work and it was my fault anyway for leaving it down there while my clothes were drying. Since my bed room is a converted two bedroom, if it's windy, the false wall feels like it's about to collapse. Luckily it's never windy in Midtown Manhattan. Your only cable options are Verizon Fios or Time Warner, so that's nice. My rent went up 16% this year, so I'm out. Pros: Convenient to Central Park, almost all subways, and other than my laundry basket incident, the neighbors generally keep to themselves, are quiet and nice. Hooters is in the same building if you're into that. The rooftop is pretty sweet, even if it takes forever to get up there sometimes.

Pros: 1.) the building location is super convenient, with access to the park and most subway lines; 2.) many of the units have excellent views, and there is an amazing view of Central Park from the roof (to which there is unlimited access); 3.) the staff is helpful and friendly; and 4.) by far the best deal for a doorman building in the area. Cons: The single-paned windows make the noise level the same as though my windows were open, even though I live over 20 floors up. If you have a unit facing west, you are inundated with fire truck and ambulance sirens and horns from Broadway, 57th street and 56th street. It's actually incredible how often an emergency vehicle goes by due to the proximity of both a hospital and a fire station. Construction in the area that starts at about 6am will also rouse the light sleeper. While the south-facing units get less traffic-related noise, the late-night and early-morning construction noise from 888 7th avenue is much worse. Other: The walls between units block out all but the loudest noises. The building could definitely use some remodeling (e.g., new carpet, wallpaper/paint, etc.), but for the below-market price of the units, I wouldn't complain about the overall upkeep. All things considered, if you are not sensitive to noise, this is a good place to be.

this place is OK. pros: you won't find a better price for the location - tons of subway lines just a block or two away. the doormen were great and very nice. cons: management is totally incompetent. you won't ever get the manager on the phone, or in person. it's probably a fake name that they give out. everytime i visit the office to discuss my rent, i always get the line, "sorry [name redacted] isn't here and i can't help you."

The doormen there are not very helpful or friendly. I do not see the point of paying their salary if they do not provide any service. Besides the view, there are much better buildings around the city for that price.

Decent Until Management Decided to Gouge You With Rent Increase
Doormen are friendly and helpful. One.elevator is out of comission sporadically but having 5 elvators help. Its a normal apt to live in. Was worth the 1290 rent for a convertes 2 bedroom until the rent hike at lease renewal. Its now 1450 and we didnt get any room for negotiation nor upkeep of apt. Bathroom remains moldy, heater a/c still makes loud tapping noise and doesnt work. Window is paper thin and i can hear outaide noise even when on the 17th floor.

Don't live here. Horrible management. Not worth the $$ anymore.
Management here is horrible b/c they refuse to talk to tenants. They are raising my rent 15-20% and refuse to negotiate after I have lived here for 7 years. I never really liked the management or the building all that much, but the price and location made it worth it. After this increase I'm definitely going to move. Other problems I've had with this building: - Occasional mice and roaches since Hooters is right downstairs - Single pane windows mean you hear everything outside, including Hooters patrons and late night jack hammers/garbage trucks - Drafty windows or AC/heater. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I've had them look into it with no resolution. My place is very cold during the winter and stuffy during the summer even with the unit running. - Poor paint job. They repainted last year and it is already chipping. Poor quality.

The doorman sucks! Extremely inappropriate and rude to guests.
I lived in this building for 2 years and its a decent apartment for the price. That's the only plus. The management isn't that good and does not cater to your problems. The biggest complaint I have is one of the doormen (I think his name is Tom but not sure). He is the fat and short guy who thinks he owns the building. He screamed at me one day because I didn't pick up my package for 2 days and said he would throw it (yes exact words!) if I didn't immediately take it. He is rude to guests as well. I went there recently to leave something for one of my friends who lives in the building and he screamed at me for no reason saying that I don't have the right to leave anything. I politely asked if that's the new rule. He then snatched the package from me and said "I need help" and called me names in front of a host of other tenants. I was stunned and speechless at this embarrassment and made my quick escape. Never am I entering this building again. Beware, if you are going to meet someone in this building, you might be humiliated by this guy!

All around average apartment
I live on the 8th floor and the noise level is ridiculous. You can hear car doors closed, the windows are so thin. It doesn't help that I have neighbors who like to play loud music all the time, so sleeping is a challenge. Most of the doormen are nice. The maintenance guys usually get the job done within a reasonable time and the rent is standard Manhattan price. The location is good. The building is old and run down looking for the most part ~ the laundry facility is kind of gross. I think this place is average.

Great building
I lived here for 2 years and loved it. They finally redecorated the hallways so they look professional. The staff and maintenance is top-notch and I always had positive interactions with management. The location is one of the most convenient in Manhattan. The only reason I moved is because I couldn't afford my own apartment here.

Great price for the location
It's not a perfect building, but I've been very happy in my year and a half (and counting) here. The staff is great, very helpful and friendly. There is roof access which isn't the best--no furniture or anything--but the views are excellent. Laundry room is fine; not sure what's up with others' complaints about it. Hallways have recently, finally, been renovated and now look quite nice (they were not so great before). Elevators are fine on the lower bank, where there are three; the upper bank which has only two seems a bit sketchier (from my observations of often seeing many people waiting for them). Walls are pretty thin, but I've been fairly lucky in terms of not having noisy neighbors -- so that's a crapshoot, I guess. Have not had any pest problems in the apartment, though I have a couple of times seen roaches near the garbage chute. The location is excellent, not only is plenty of great stuff within walking distance but there's also excellent access to multiple subway lines within a very short walk. I pay $2800 for a good-sized one bedroom apartment (by New York standards) with lots of closet space and big windows, and it's a great deal for the location and the apartment. Many of the people writing about this building (and other buildings, for that matter) seem to be completely clueless about New York real estate -- you pay a fortune, and you still don't get anything; even the newer "luxury" buildings, which charge far more, are known for having serious construction quality issues. So for my money, Carnegie Mews is a solid building at a good price.

Can't Wait to Move
My husband and I have been in a 1-bedroom on the "M-line" for the past two years. When we first moved in we were surprised to find how thin the windows are. We are on a pretty high floor and can hear the cars on 57th hit every pot hole; not to mention that there has been construction next door, which means a jack hammer feels like it is going through our heads on Saturday morning at 8AM! During this past winter a hot water pipe was replaced and we hear a constant clanking, which always seems to start at night when we are sleeping. So, we haven't slept for the past 2 years! WE bought a white noise maker and a fan going to try to block out some of the noise, but sometimes i just end up with the pillow over my head. The tile in the bathroom is falling off and they never EVER have the outside of the windows clean. On the upside, they are starting to make some improvements in the hallways. But ultimately there are 2 pluses to this place - The View & The Doorman/Super. But if you want to spend $3k for a 1 bedroom and no sleep - then this is the place for you...but we suggest going to a newer building with the amenities this place will not offer.

decent place for the money
I think its a decent place (almost 2 years now) but you get what you pay for. On the upside, apartments are clean, kitchen is small but decent and bathrooms are clean (free from rodents, etc). Location is awesome central to everything. Staff is very nice. On the downside, hallways are dingy and laundry room is sub-standard. The roof desk is horrible although it has great views. Elevators break once every 2-3 months. Overall positive experience.

Don't use the Dry cleaners.
If you haven't lost your clothes, you are lucky. But if that situation happens, you will never get them back and nobody there is going to be responsible for the lost clothes. The best they can say is "they don't know what happened" . The woman Kang is nice but another woman is very RUDE and mean. She refused to look for what they lost and used bad language. I've never seen anyone this disgusting. I regret sending my expensive clothes there. Never will I go back to that place again.

Good location
I definitely love the location of this apartment building (close to subway, time warner center, etc...). I loved my view too. I had the whole unblocked central park view, river view, columbus circle view. For the price I paid ($2,100), it definitely is a steal (for the views). The doormen are extremely nice and they know you personally. The maintenance isn't too bad; however, my toilet got stuck a few times. My kitchen was relatively new, so no complaints over that. My bathroom was a bit older, but it was still clean. I didn't experience any rats/roaches problems, which was a big plus. The hallways definitely need an update, but no one sleeps in the hallway, so it isn't a huge problem for me. I heard that the prices kept going up in recent years, but I felt that a studio at $2,100 in a doorman building at that location is really unbeat. Would I live there again? Probably, if they renovate the bathrooms...

The prices are definitely going up (I haven't heard of any buildings where rent has gone down, but please let me know if you find one), but I still think it's a great place to live. Location is blue-chip, walking distance from all subways and in the heart of everything. It's true the corridors are in bad shape, but the apartments themselves are well-maintained with renovated kitchens, good floors, no pests/rodents, etc. Laundry room was recently upgraded and the doormen & maintenance staff are always very helpful. Ecletic mix of residents keep the place from feeling like a retirement home or college dormitory.

Management sucks!
There are many lovely features of this apartment building- the doormen and super are wonderful, the views are amazing, and it is actually a reasobale deal for the neighborhood-- I basically enjoyed my apartment. But none of this is worth dealing with the miserable management. They are a bunch of liars who are completely unprofessional, untrustworthy, and incompetent not to mention rude, lazy and disrespectful. They really give the building a bad rap.

My advice is to find some place else to live even if it costs more!!

rising rent
i've lived here for 2 yrs. and the rent went from 2395 to 2780 to 2950. moved out cuz it wasnt worth it anymore...the windows are so thin you can hear everything even from the 35th floor and they open by themselves when it's really windy! the doormen are super-nice though and the location is great. you got time warner bldg., central park, all the trains right there, shops, restaurants..but that's about it. the bldg is old and the hallways are dingy..

Good place for the price and location
I lived here for two years. The apartment was huge and location was great but that's where anything nice about this place ended

The building is in really poor condition, dimly lit floors with old carpeting, the laundry room is about the scariest place I've been and the lobby is very shabby. The elevators are really old and keep breaking down.

The doormen are extremely nice though but I really wouldn't stay here. Not worth it for the price and as other reviewers say -- they keep increasing the price without improving anything.

It's getting expensive
I lived in this building from 2003 to 2005 and I loved it. Unfortunately I had to leave because the rent increase was not worth it anymore. The location is great and the staff super. The noise at night (even in high floors - 18) is also a big con.

25% increase in rent price!!!
We are liveing in this building for 1 year now and the rent is now increasing by over 25%!!! (from $2100 to $2700) that's unbelievable and we will have to move as it's too expensive.

All in all the building is very nice, the doormen are very nice, the handymen and super are always available and fix any problem almost immediately. The apartment we have is huge in the city terms and the equipment works fine. The location is also great - very close to all transportation and the park.
However note that this building suffers from a major problem - the windows - they are large and composed of thin glass (non double glazing), meaning that noise and frost penetrate into the apartment easily so it's pretty noisy on a daily basis (also at night) and when there is construction - be prepared for non stop noise day and night and when it's cold - make sure to keep the air-conditioner on.

We don't think that such an increase is justified considering the poor condition of the windows in the building and the non stop noise in the area!

Close to everything... was the best deal around Midtown
I have lived here for 2 years and it is a great location. The rent has been much less expensive than other similar apartments but is on the rise!! The new rent quotes are close to prices paid for other midtown apartments but they have a gym with better foyers and corridors. The doormen are lovely and any repairs are done quickly. I'd recommend it, as long as the price doesn't escalate much more.... please note I have not seen any vermin while I have been here!!
