A major updating of facilities both outside and inside are adding many attractive new amenities that were sorely missing before. The transitions are being done in an organized and monitored manner to make the best of the situation. Location is great and the staff is attentive and personable and responsive in every way.

The value is good at Shirlington house (price for location/size). However, beware the property is currently undergoing renovations which cause the water to be out every Thursday, along with a few other inconveniences (like malfunctions with heating and water pressure). Overall, great location and good sized, bright, comfortable apartment, great staff!

Great location, spacious apartment great maintenance team. Very well maintained pet friendly apartment community. Improvements to the community this year of a dog park is a nice addition. Convenience store on site is a plus.

Lived here 3 months & can't wait to get out. Reserved freight elevator to move in & the keys were given to other people twice that day. We were told to wait or use regular elevator in spite of the fact that we had reserved it. There was a fire in the building and the fire alarm is so old it is just a ringing bell in the hallway and had NO idea needed to evacuate. Can't hear it in your apartment hardly, husband and I thought the noise was part of our tv show at first. Neighbors drunk at 9 am on a Saturday morning banging on my door, broke glass in the hallway and dropped lit cigarettes on carpet in hallway. Elevator number 2 gets "stuck" frequently also known as your trapped on the elevator. Which happened to me at 7 months pregnant and almos had to be taken to the ER due to severity of panic attack. Said it would get fixed yet another resident got stuck just one week later. I am now walking 7 flights of stairs at 7.5 months pregnant, to my apartment, due to being terrified it getting stuck. We're living here temporarily and I can't wait to get out next month.

I very much enjoyed my time at Shirlington House. That's probably why I ended up hanging around for 13 years. Overall I had a really positive experience as a resident. Noise: This is probably one of the quietest buildings you can choose. Sure, the building is old, but my goodness is it soundproof. I rarely if ever heard my neighbors save for a couple of months when my downstairs neighbor had a large dog with anxiety issues. Even then it was pretty muffled. Grounds: The front entrance is nicely manicured. Parking lot appears to be well maintained. There is a charcoal grill out back next to the swimming pool. Speaking of the swimming pool, it's pretty large given the size of the building. You can always find a seat for sunbathing. Also this building is very "dog friendly" with plenty of pet waste disposal bins on the lawn. So Fido is at home here too! Safety: I personally never felt unsafe while living at Shirlington House. There is a concierge desk at the front of the building that is manned 24 X 7 which can be comforting if you are rolling in at 3am. Neighborhood: What can I say? You are in Shirlington which is absolutely one of the cutest neighborhoods in Arlington! Sure, Shirlington is not on the metro, but there's an awesome climate controlled bus station that is just a few steps away from the building. From there you are a quick 7 minute bus ride to the Pentagon. Or you can hop on a bus to Crystal City or Old Town Alexandria instead. That being said, why even bother to leave the neighborhood given all the amenities Shirlington has to offer. There's a grocery store, veterinarian, library, dozens of restaurants, a wine and cheese shop, movie theater, etc. within a couple of blocks of the apartment. There's also a dry cleaners in Shirlington, but I recommend using the on-site dry cleaner at Shirlington House inside Shirlington Market. The prices are cheaper and they do a good job. Maintenance: Whenever I have an issue it's usually fixed within 24 hours and the maintenance team is quite courteous. There used to be a rather cantankerous fellow running maintenance but I didn't see him at all during my last year or two at the building leading me to conclude he has moved on. Everyone else on the maintenance team has been GREAT. Staff: The management team here do a good job! Felisa is a true gem. For example, Shirlington House is a smoke free building and someone near my apartment wasn't following the rules. Within a couple of weeks she was going door to door to try to figure out who the culprit was. She must have found them too because I never smelled it again. While the management team are both competent and personable, there is room for improvement with the evening shift front desk staff. It's very frustrating to argue with the individual at the front desk as to whether or not they have one of my packages. Frankly, I was treated quite rudely by the concierge and that's the last thing anyone wants to deal with after a long day at work. The building recently implemented a package tracking system to better manage packages, but I still had issues. I think occasionally they simply weren't logged. Bottom Line: Sure there are fancier places you can live if you want to spend the money, but Shirlington House offers the best value in Arlington. You won't find "resort style amenities" or "luxury" but you will have an spacious apartment in a safe neighborhood that has all the amenities.

Told me price of studio was 1300 and raised it to 1400 two days later. Refused calls during those two days. Very outdated rooms. Most likely not updated since the 90's. Large but old. Expenses are included in prices. Parking is only $10. Absolutely refuses to negotiate price from one day before. Application fee is $65

Hi, I've been living at Shirlington House for almost 3 years now. I would say that at first I fell in love with the building but as soon as I ran into some issues, I realized how poorly managed this building actually is. It is something fixable but the Management is not working on resolving anything. Management Someone from the front desk either gave away my Queen size inflatable mattress or took for themselves! I had bought online the mattress which was shipped express 2 days and confirmed delivered to the front desk, yet the package disappeared while at the front desk and I had to let one of my guest sleep on the floor as Management never came back to me and Amazon was nice enough to ship another express to accommodate the following day. Yet after talking to front desk, Hayley (the one who receives the packages who had signed off the delivery is asking me if I'm sure I didn't pick up my own package and the other guy at the front desk tells me that it's out of favor that they receive packages for residents). Well that's how everyone receives packages and I went to pick up my delivery with my UPS slip in hand (if you don't have a slip they usually don't give you your package) and I went to pick it up barely 24hrs after delivery. I have left a note to the Manager and was told she would get back to me. No news and we are 6 days later! I even called back the front desk to let them know the manager never came back to me!!! I'm expecting them to make sure no one is stealing from their front desk as they have a camera... but NO... nothing...they don't care. Conclusion: Do not trust them! Whoever took my package is lucky! And what's funny is that management is not at all occupied by this yet UPS delivered and I have electronic confirmation. Maybe they took it which is why they haven't even returned a call. Needless to say I have made also a complain with UPS, spoke to UPS guy face to face who confirms delivering the package which is why it's electronically written and also complained with Amazon that the front desk at Shirlington House might be stealing packages and they should track to see if others have experienced the same. Parking Garage A: The door is always broken, therefore garage door always opened. No security at night time in the parking as anyone can hide in the parking lot. For the last 3 months, the door have been working for max 3 weeks! Go ahead if you're thinking about moving here and take a look for yourself! just drive on 31st Street and you'll see the doors constantly open. Pet Fee: Dog: Payment of I think $500 AND your rent increases by $150/month. Is that normal? I don't have a pet because I don't see why I would give them extra $ with no extra service Laundry room: Well, it's a laundry room. One per floor.. It's ok and does the job Maybe I'm unlucky but last year there's a male resident who actually decided to put his dirty clothes in my washing machine while it was working. YES, as I emptied the washer I found men clothing so through them on the floor. To see later a man with key access pick up his clothes from the floor and leave. No I didn't confront the greyish haired dude as it was midday so building is empty and you never know how crazy he would react. Made complaints, sent emails and talked to management. What do you think happened after? Nothing, no follow-up, They listened and heard but did NOTHING. Unit itself are nice and big Plenty of room Everything is white and beige Usually don't hear neighbors Nothing updated, no granit, nothing pops out. It works. Water: There's usually a water outage once a month, not sure why. Forget about hot showers in winter months. Many times we were out or ran out of hot water so now I plan on taking it at nights. Also, random times the boiler breaks and no hot water in the building, even during summer (usually at night) Shirlington Village: This is the reason people stay here! Clean, secure and has everything Boring neighborhood and far from metro or any dating scene but very safe and filled with restaurants. If you don't possess a car, forget the bus service late nights and week-end! You'll waste so much time waiting or trying to plan an outing.... so make uber or taxi your friend. Rush hour: bus service is actually amazing Maintenance: Actually, they are very nice and act fast! Conclusion: Problem here is management. I would stay longer if they were responsible and responsive. But as my renewal is up soon, I'm moving. I wouldn't let one other incident happen while I live here to see their inaction and non-responsiveness and blame myself for staying in a building which doesn't respect its residents and act like they care when they just don't. I had a great time here but I rather a little more to get service and respect! P.S I actually don't care that Management can identify me with my obviously very honest and accurate post. I think people should know what they are getting into. Would I recommend this building? Depends. If you don't order anything online and need a place for 1 year... YES.. otherwise NO

I've lived in Shirlington house for over 4 years. The location is GREAT...so many options for dinner. It's really great when you have guests to be able to have a short walk for a good meal and great atmosphere and/or to go sight seeing. YES, the building is older, but the size of my apartment reflects that. Overall, the staff is pretty good. Some more than others (Felicia), some less than others. Some with a good attitude some with a HORRIBLE attitude (Sterling). However, the morning front desk staff member, Rachael is GREAT. ALWAYS helpful with a smile on her face. I've seen residents giving her such a hard time and she always maintains her cheerful composure. The building does offer great views, and the grounds are pretty. Parking, well, if you're late coming in and don't have a reserved space, pretty scary! :-)

Roaches. I've lived here for three years, and most recently I've noticed an influx of roaches in my kitchen, in my bathroom and in my living room. It is disgusting. Because I was desperate to get rid of them, I paid for services from Orkin. I also contacted the building managers to inform them of my issue, and they implied that it was my fault because I was using an outside service. When I requested that the apartments around me also be treated by the building's extermination service, the most confirmation I received was "probably" and I was brushed off. Yes, compare to other buildings in the area, my rent isn't much; however, I still pay too much to be dismissed. And I will continue to get the word out until the issue is resolved. It is miserable living here now, and I will me moving this year.

Great Location - Friendly Staff (Felisa, Jerome, Elizabeth, Sterling) - Solid building, no chance of outside noise - Real value for your dollar. It's funny to read the No's in this survey. You're steps away from one of the hottest communities in all of Arlington, halfway walking to the Village you have a newly built bus stop, there's ample parking, an enormous pool, a fitness center unheard of for building this age, of course you're going to pay rent. I had a delightful time here. In fact I've enjoyed all Virginia Management locations (about 3 for me now).

I have lived here for almost a year now and love it! The location is convenient since I work in DC-bus to Pentagon metro just outside apt bldg. Wonderful restaurants and Harris Teeter in walking distance. Building older but sturdy and well maintained by friendly and helpful staff. Great place to live.

I lived in this building for over five years. I never thought I would stay so long but for the very same reason I moved in, I stayed. It is the best deal in town. You get what you pay for, this is an older building which allows for more space in a great neighborhood. It's fun to walk to restaurants, bars, the library, pilates and the movies. More shops are coming into the neighborhood. Along with the 24 hour market, it really is all you need. There is a shop onsite that can handle your dry cleaning and has any last moment item you might need. Jerome, the Leasing Manager took care of any escalated requests, I really appreciated that. The managers are friendly and the staff is also. If you are looking for a lot of space and want to be able to do without your car on your personal time, for the best dollar value then this is the place.

Location: With average rent in the area being enough to have a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath house in the majority of the country, Shirlington House looked like a deal. It is a five minute walk to Shirlington: library, grocery store, a couple of restaurants and two indy theaters. However (huge emphasis), the price is not worth the location as it is not anywhere near metro (buses that run every half an hour or longer do not count as feasible transportation in my opinion), you will tire of the Shirlington amenities in two to three weekends, and there is never ending traffic on the 395 to make any commute excruciating. In addition, you are still at least a $25 cab ride to Arlington proper, D.C., or Alexandria. So yeah, you need a car and calling this an urban village is a joke. Good access to bike/running trails is a positive. Parking: As you will need a car, I suggest that you do not intend to come home or leave after 7PM. If you do, you will not find a space and may even be forced into a metered space (self experience) if you work any type of night shift. Sure, you can buy parking but do you really want to add another $40 on top of rent you are already paying? Isn't free parking one of the best selling points of living in the suburbs? Front desk staff: The weekend staff is amazing but unfortunately I like to get my mail every day, not just on Saturdays. If you feel the same, then you will get to experience the glory that is Elizabeth. She is one of the rudest people I have ever met and will make it seem like you are asking her to kill her first born if you hand her a package slip. Then there is the condemnation/condescension on occasion where you can experience her direct quotes to one of her friends whom she is always talking to instead of working (as she slowlyyyy gets your package) such as, "our residents have a lot of money so some get two packages". One, if I had a lot of money you better believe I would not be living at the cheapest building in the area and two, it was the holidays so shame on my family. If you want to read other reviews about Elizabeth, there are many on this site. For submitting work orders the same goes as above: use the weekend staff or the late-night/early morning if you want more than a brush off. Power: Seems to go down weekly for at least a day at a time. Air conditioning: May to October with nothing to do with actual weather conditions outside. It is miserable if you have allergies or if it is a warm spring. Let's not forget with the power going down you will also not have it all of those days. Hot water: Like warm/hot showers? Don't expect them on the days without power. Maintenance Staff: Joey is one of the nicest people you will ever meet and he is very good at his job. He is courteous, efficient, and always does great work. Sterling on the other hand is the head maintenance man who you will probably deal with more often and is the exact opposite of Joey. Hey, can't win them...all? Pool: Memorial day to Labor day but closed on Mondays or the Tuesday after if Monday is a holiday. Store: Friendly owner, mediocre dry cleaning, has the basics. Laundry: 3 washers and 3 dryers per floor costing 1.75 to wash and 1.75 to dry per load. As there are 50 apartments per floor there is surprising few times that I have had to wait. You can also use the laundry rooms on any floor. Pet Policy: Dogs are 50 dollars per month and there is a one time fee as well. Cats are 25 with the same one time fee. Maximum of 2. Noise: Quiet. Solid concrete construction and mostly middle class working neighbors that just want to be left alone. Overall: Shirlington house could have promise but it fails. The location is poor and the building is falling apart so you get to pay cheaper rent. However, the rent does not make up for long commute, bad parking, washer and dryer not in the unit, and especially the overall hostility of the staff. It could be doable if the staff did not make every interaction miserable and you keep out of mind you are paying 3 times the average Americans mortgage and only slightly less than the average mortgage for the area. There are far nicer buildings/townhomes/condos for rent that are closer to D.C., FT. Belvoir, or Tysons for about the same or slightly more which have full amenities and a staff that wants to keep their tenants.

I have lived in Shirlington House for a year and a half and highly recommend it. The location is unbeatable (walking distance to Shirlington Village. The management, the maintenance crew and the front desk staff are all top notch. The small but well-equipped gym is kept spotless and isn't used by many tenants so there's always a treadmill or weigh machine available. The party room is roomy and well equipped with a bar, kitchen, TV, dancing area, seating and dining area. There is a lovely guest apartment if you can fit all of your guests into your apartment. My friends stayed there and they loved it. The pool which is open in the summer is delightful at the end of the day and it's never crowded (at least it never was when I went--which was every afternoon. We did have a power outage after a huge storm last summer but so did several hundred thousand other people in the area. The maintenance staff are knocking on your door with their repair cart minutes after you call for help. The rooms are huge as are the closets. I guess you can say I really like this place because it's true. I'm moving out west soon and will miss the great service.

Pros: - Unbelievable location. Easy access to 395, Metro buses, and Shirlington Village, which is one of the nicest areas in Northern Virginia. By far the biggest advantage - Nice, bright apartments - Responsive maintenance staff - On-site parking lots and garage available - No pest problems - Utilities included - hassle free - The people who live in the building are mostly quiet, nice, working, middle-class people * Cons: - Rent goes up by $100 every year like clockwork. Used to be a great value, but now just a decent/fair value. - Electricity goes out for extended periods a couple of times each year, and last year there was a burst pipe water outage that lasted a week. Not the fault of management, but they are supposed to refund rent for the days the apartment is not habitable with electricity and running water. They don't do this and make up silly legal explanations - "not within our direct control" - so if I lose my job, I can stop paying rent because it's "not within my direct control"? No, didn't think so. - Heat/air conditioning is a full on/off switch and the management saves money every year by letting you freeze in 45-degree weather for two weeks in October. Wearing winter coats in your apartment for two weeks isn't fun. - Some of the front desk people are lazy, incompetent, or have attitudes (e.g., older guy who works on Sundays), but others are fine. * The single exception to the quiet environment was last year when management rented nextdoor to an incredibly loud family with a young kid. They would have their large extended family over every day, the wife didn't work and was screaming Spanish at all hours of the day, and they'd crank the TV up to the max. We complained and management just told us to fight it out with them on our own or call the police - really stupid and irresponsible advice - that is an issue management should handle (and why didn't they screen these tenants?). I would recommend the place, mostly based on the amazing location and lack of good alternatives, but these are things any renter should be aware of in advance.

Im a native Arlingtonion and grew up in Fairlington, work in property management and know the market very well. I've lived at Shirlington House for nearly 2 years and for the price you cannot beat this location, free parking, free utilities. There is a pool, fitness center, you can walk to Shirlington and close to DC. The apartments are massive,as are the closets. Also, this place does not seem to allow your car to be towed which is unheard of in Arlington. And to the people who complained about the no heat and water this past winter? Really people, this is not the mangement's fault, this was the entire block, a main pipe broke. It was not fun i admit, but we forget stuff happens, this is why the rest of the word thinks we are spoiled and intitled, live in a third world country and then just maybe you'll have a bit of respect for what the rest of the world goes thru to even to have dirty drinking water. As for the comments about the staff, i have my favorites and my lest as does everyone. Daryl the assistant is fantastic, his customer service is superb, personally i wish he was the main manager, but Oh Well... And Elizabeth at the front desk is always sweet to me. Anyway hope this helps anyone looking:)

A review from someone who has lived here a long time!
Most of the reviews are inaccurate or posted by novices to apartment dwelling. Really, a $1.50 is too much to wash/dry your clothes? What do you expect in this area! I am an experienced apartment dweller who has lived in many places in the US and can tell you without hesitation that Shirlington House has the best customer service. I have lived here for 7 years and have yet to have a bad experience. Yes, there have been water and electric outages, which were out of the control of management. Each time they have kept us well informed, either in person or by posting notices on each individual door. They stay through the night to make sure we are comfortable. They provide food/refreshments to help us pass the time. Darryl, Felicia, Esa and Elizabeth are the best. Whenever I have a problem, which is rare, they greet me with a smile and take care of it right away. They go above and beyond the minimal levels of customer service. For example, when my insulin is delivered they place it in the refrigerator and let me know right away. When I have any service done in my apartment, I receive a call at work if there is an issue. I would recommend Shirlington House to anyone who is looking for an apartment that has exceptionally large rooms and closet space, reasonable rent for the location, close proximity to DC and a staff that makes you feel that your issue (no matter how small) is the most important thing on their to do list. Horrible place to live
I recently moved here towards the end of last year to start my residency at Georgetown and so far have had a horrible experience. First off, the staff, especially the front desks, is in no way friendly nor helpful (beyond signing your contract). It was almost like an inconvenience to them to hear any complaints from tenants. Now I would normally be able to deal with this, but I need something done with the leaks in my apartment that are never repaired and the mold that was here prior to me moving in. Now on the bright side, the outdoor parking is free (covered parking at a reasonable fee) and the $1.50 for washing/drying laundry isn't bad; however, having to deal with everything else just isn't worth it to me. It is also located in close proximity to Shirlington Village which is definitely a plus. If I got to do it all over again, which I will when my lease is finally up, I would definitely find a better place. A lot of people say you get what you pay for and I definitely couldn't have stated it better myself.

Decent prices given the area
My husband and I have lived here now for nearly two years. We love the area and the close proximity to our jobs. The apartment itself isn't bad for the price ($1,200/month for a one-bedroom on a higher floor). It's also nice having a convenience store on-site which also offers dry-cleaning services to an off-site location. A few issues: They've been having problems with the plumbing as the water pipes have busted twice since early March, and I wish they could turn the AC on though a little sooner than after May. There are some at the front desk who could use an attitude adjustment; Specifically the woman who works B shift, think her name is Elizabeth. There's also an older female resident who roams around it seems aimlessly who is kind of spooky. I noticed she went up to someone's car the other day while they were idling in the front of the building, and it looked liked the woman in the car was a little frightened as a result. Other than that, it's a convenient place to live, and the furnishings are all recently renovated. I'd recommend this place to anyone who wants to be in proximity to DC, Arlington, and Crystal City.

Great Deal!
I live in a 2 bedroom with my husband and 18 month old child. This building has met every one of our needs. Affordable (less than $1900 a month, including utilities, parking, and pet fee), Safe, and Clean. We love being able to walk down to Shirlington Village. There is a laundry facility on every floor (which is way better than trecking down to a basement). We have had no issues with noise, bugs, mold, or unfriendly neighbors. Our child loves running around the lobby and is friendly with all of the staff. The onsite convenience store is pricey, but works in a pinch. Parking is free (and only $40 for a guaranteed garage spot)! And easy to find most days. The commute to DC is very doable. I drive into work, near the Capitol, and if I leave at 7:30 I am at work by 8:00. Our biggest complaints are really for problems we knew we would have when we moved in. We want more space, including another bathroom. It is really uncomfortable on 90 degree days without the Air Conditioning in the building being on. Some days, I just wish I could do my laundry on my own schedule... and not have to share the machines with my whole floor. The snob in me would prefer granite and stainless steel. Parking can be impossible if you arrive home later than 9 pm and I don't want to pay for the garage. Wish we were next to a metro.. because it takes way to long to ride the bus, then the metro, then walk to work. Etc. Etc. Is this place perfect? Nope. Is it an amazing steal for the price? Absolutely. My family has been looking for somewhere equally affordable, safe, and clean since we moved in (simply because we want a 3rd room for a future child and an additional bathroom). We have yet to find anything that could possibly match our satisfaction here.

Wish I could have Stayed Forever
I have lived at Shirlington House for three years and I would say it is the absolute best building in the area. The convenience to restaurants and shops in the Shirlington Village is just on of the many perks. The building is very affordable compared to others in the immediate area and annual rent increases are very reasonable. The building is very well maintained and although not a luxury building, is kept very clean and updated. For those looking for a safe and clean apartment building at an affordable price, this is the place. The staff at Shirlington House is not to be beat. The management staff is always available via phone or in person to discuss concerns and makes it a point to get to know residents. The 24 hour front desk staff is comprised of residents and outside staff persons who take their job seriously but do it with a smile and are always willing to help you out with a missing key or garage parking pass at any hour of the day or night. The parking is great because you don't have to pay former than one spot in a two bedroom and the building floor plans are much larger than neighboring buildings. When I found this place I thought it was too good to be true but have been a resident ever since and have never had a single complaint. Ni know I will have to leave some day to raise a family but it breaks my heart to think of living anywhere else!

Great place to live
This apartment is a great place to live. The location is excellent. If you take public transit, you can walk to Shirlington Transit Center to take many buses. Metro Bus 7 would take you to Pentagon Metro Station in 10 minutes. If you drive, you can get on I-395 in 5 minutes. The apartment is within walking distance to many good restaurants, a grocery store, may hair salons, a library, a movie theater, USPS, UPS, subway, Bank of America ATM, etc. There is also a convenience store in the building. The apartment has good management. The front desk is 24/7 and very friendly. The front desk accept packages on behalf of you. The maintenance staff respond quickly and typically solve your problem in 24 hours. Overall, this is a great place to live.

totally not worth what you save
First off, I had to crack up at the option to upload a photo - I seriously contemplated posting the picture of mold in my apartment. I moved here because I really didn't need anything fancy, and I was excited at what seemed like decent rent right by Shirlington. I should have known that I was going to get what I paid for! Do not move here. I am tired of living in a place where I have to constantly call maintenance because of leaks that are not fixed, deal with mold in my apartment (my eye actually swelled shut - we will go ahead and assume in fairness that this wasn't the mold?), know the laundry machines will eat my money, and get my hopes up every day to see if may, just maybe, the one of two main doors will be fixed (we're going on day 24 now). Also, the halls look like the setting of a campy 1970s horror flick, and it's really hard to ask the front desk anything. I've been a student for a very long time so I have a really high threshold for complaint. I like that I'm saving money by living here, but if I had known about these issues, I wouldn't have had a problem with paying more elsewhere.

Loved It.
I lived in Shirlington House for 2 years, one in a studio and one in a one bedroom. I loved the place. Great location, close to everything in Shirlington, and the best rent in the area. In terms of cleanliness, I never saw a mouse, roach, or other bug while living there. Not one. Maintenance was pretty good, we didn't really have any problems but Sterling treats the place like his baby, he takes care of the building. Some of the people at the front desk are a little clueless, but in an absent minded professor way, not in a rude employee way. They generally are pretty good about answering questions, and most live in the building. I have no complaints.
