Not a bad place to live but residents do not always abide by the "no smoking policy" so you can often smell weed in the hallways (and sometimes in your apartment if you live next door to someone who does smoke). Also, you do not have control over the individual heating/cooling systems. I for one have not ever turned on my heat and I am STILL often hotter than I would like to be. Can you imagine then how unbearable the temperature becomes inside in April and May before the air is turned on?. It is my opinion that the heat should be turned off earlier and the air system turned on long before the middle of May. Residents can choose to keep their AC off and they will be comfortable.

Right now I would say a 6/10 because of rats in the apartment. I understand the apartment is doing their best to get them out of the apartments. The last concern drains in the apartment but I'm guess building is old.

Great Maintenance Services
We had asked for some shelves to be put in, along with our garbage disposal being broke..plus something else was needed in the bathroom. Joey the maintenance man was very very attentive to our issue. He was very friendly, and got the job done pretty fast...We had many request and I can tell he is the best at what he does We wish we could have Joey everytime we have an issue.

Friendly and attentive onsite employees! Spacious apartment. The package room area could use a lean six sigma process. If your packages aren't put into a locker by the carriers it's a free for all in the package room.

Overall, I have not had a great experience living at Shirlington House. Last year, I had a serious rodent issue and it took nearly 6 months for this to resolve. I've also had issues where I'd call and leave voicemails and emails about things I needed addressed and it would take nearly 2 months to respond back.

The community is well managed. The maintenance team is exceptional. The availability of public transportation and entertainment options are a highlight. The guest parking spaces and the package lockers are great features.

the staff is terrific. the noise level in my apartment is good. However parties can go to 2am in the back outside party area. Ineffective notices are sent to remind people to end their parties at 10PM which everyone ignores.

I've been a loyal customer who pays on time and takes good care of the space. You're pricing me out and this is my last year here. The business model of rental pricing fluctuating like the stock market is not sustainable for students/interns/ and early career professionals. This isn't the only company that operates this way but treating your customers like cattle just because that's how everyone else does it isn't a solution

I feel it is a safe community. While I find current and past General Managers aloof, unavailable for those who have 9-5 jobs, I have found the other staff very hospitable. Maintenance is quick to respond and friendly. Cleaning staff do a great job. While I find many residents polite and friendly, I feel basic respect for shared space continues to decline: trash rooms (boxes not broken down/raw garbage on floor/furniture), laundries (not removing clothes from machines), noise on halls, late night screaming in parking area and down halls, barking animals, basic courtesy, smoking, dog excrement, shopping carts from grocery store left on residential halls. Rent goes up and services (security guard, concierge in evening) went down. Fees added for water and service charge to the company who bills us for water. Parking was free on lot, now $75. The location is primary reason I stay. I do appreciate the grocery store. Fitness was nice but it now gets trashed/broken machines. Would like to see a residents' council established. Snow removal poor. There is a pile of snow behind my car right now. Snow/ice piled against curbs made it difficult to walk to sidewalks, cars. Laundry rooms are kept clean. Parcel management system works well and property staff help if there is a problem. I appreciate this system and help.

I've had issues with the mail lockers. Response time from management/maintenance are unreasonable long. Staff is pleasant for the most part. Windows aren't sealed so you hear everything and is drafty.

The staff at Shirlington House is wonderful. They are very responsive and super friendly. I love my neighborhood and my neighbors. The only frustration I have is the recent massive increase to parking fees. I feel a 75% increase is a bit ridiculous and I worry about residents on a fixed income.

Staff are friendly and helpful (especially Troy), it's in a great location, package delivery is smooth, and maintenance answers requests quickly. New batch of neighbors are the worst. Above sounds like WWE or a medicine ball is being bounced. Next door neighbors yell all day and night. Dogs bark all day and depending on when owners return, all night as well. Mouse issue started in October (not even winter yet). Maintenance did what they could but it was up to me to resolve. Tenants leave dog droppings in building as well as outside or pet urine in elevator. Very selfish to leave maintenance to clean up after that.

I have only lived here a couple of months but I love it already. Jackie and Troy are two of the most helpful people I have ever met. I love my apartment. The building is super-clean too. Great!!!!

The front office and other staff at this apartment are super friendly and responsive. With that being said, my wife and I aren't having the best time. The apartment itself is decent but not upgraded and things are falling apart. Our apartment faces the garbage area and it's always full with people leaving whatever they don't want when they leave the apartment. Also, there are hundreds of crows by the tree line where they "crow" super early every morning. And not to mention that we hear everything from the walls either next to us or above. I really haven't slept since I moved in. There's more but that's for another time.

I have lived here about two years. Really enjoyed the dog community and friends I have made. I wouldn't recommend the apartment complex though. Heat/air shuts off automatically before the seasons really change, slow to respond to maintenance requests (if at all), and refuse to address smokers in the building. A few of my friends and I have started to see small bugs in our apartments due to the weather change, but no response from the office or maintenance team on requests to rectify. Also difficult to get renewal notices, answers to questions, referral bonuses - really anything. All while they are begging for online reviews. Go spend your $2,000+ dollars somewhere else.

The leasing process was easy and the staff were attentive and responsive during the process. The apartment building is quiet and most residents stay to themselves. Maintenance responds quickly and gets the job done. Leasing office staff is nice and very helpful and always available to answer a question.

This community is almost perfect. The AC being shut off and using a vague guideline by Arlington County (which is easily findable) to justify shutting off the AC is a single minded, and quite frankly, rude move. DC does not get cold by October 1st and it does not stay cold until May! People have pets, health issues, and other things where shutting off Air Conditioning just to make your profit margins a bit higher is a scumbag move. Literally the only reason people leave and bad mouth this place!

I enjoy living in Shirlington House Apartments since 2013. Management makes sure everything is kept up to date in the building. Close by to restaurants, supermarket, drug store and bus stop. Thank you

I have been a big fan of Shirlington House until recently. This place accepted me with questionable credit and gave me a great apartment to live in. It's the nicest place I've ever lived. What soured me recently: My expensive brand-new bike was stolen. It was housed in what is supposed to be a secure garage that only people with key fobs can access. Clearly that is not the case. Because of the deductible on my renter's insurance, the bike will not be replaced. I trusted this building and used the facilities available to use to make my living space easier for me by keeping the bike in the garage. That trust has been violated and I'm not sure how to move past it. Secondly, my rent has gone up from about $1,600/month for a 1-BD/BR when I moved in to now $2,200 a month over six years. That is a huge spike in rent. I don't see new amenities or securities in place to justify that increase. I know other tenants here have been stunned by the giant hikes in rent. There are people who have lived in this building 20+ years and are getting raked over the coals in rent.

Great location but overpriced for the quality of the apartment itself. The renovations that have been done are like putting lip stick on a pig. For example, how many times can you paint over something? They keep painting over issues like rust instead of fixing it. The glue is seeping out of the tile and looks disgusting. The grounds keepers do a great job of cleaning and maintaining the building. If that were not the case, I don't think I could stay here. The AC seemed better this year than last year so that was nice but apartments still get uncomfortably hot and get turned off when it's still insanely hot. You're simply paying for location here. Property Management/Leasing staff are friendly. However, I don't have the most confidence in the Maintenance Manager & his level of expertise and professionalism.

I love this community. The maintenance team are always prompt to address issues, we enjoy the activities that are provided here as well, such as movie night, sip and paint, donut days etc. Our only issue is we really wish the freight elevator nearest our apartment would be fixed. It has been out of service for quite a long time and it makes bringing in new furniture pieces or large boxes a bit of a challenge.

Disappointed in raised rates for an apartment that doesn't have a/c and charges for parking. There should also be pest control hired by the apartment office to take care of cockroaches that seem to plague many apartments. I've heard from other tenants that this is becoming more problematic.

I am pleased with the overall apartment here at Shirlington House, but most of all I am please with the staff especially Troy (Assistant Manager). He has the most upbeat personality and he will willing to go out of his way to assist with any of my request and concerns. The maintenance team is great as well.
