I discovered my apartment has mice right after I moved in. A month later and no progress has been made, just a few sticky traps and several visits from rodent control. I live on the backside and the crows and backup alarms are LOUD every morning. Floors were quite dirty when I moved in. The gym is surprisingly nice though, that gets 5 stars for the money. I chose this apartment for the location, cost, apartment size, and full washer/dryer. I am satisfied generally but I have discovered a number of minor annoyances and inconveniences since moving in. I don't think I'd recommend this place. I came from a very similar older building in Crystal City and was very satisfied with the level of money and effort their ownership/mgmt put back into that building and its amenities; I am quite displeased with what I have found at Shirlington House. Everything feels like a bare minimum upgrade and a thin facade. Also, every day that I live with mice, my frustration grows.

Very helpful with fast response to maintenance requests. Staff has worked to help keep building reasonably quiet, and have improved that situation greatly from situation 5 years ago or so. Current on-site management and maintenance are friendly and help when matters brought to their attention.

Experience has been very lovely thus far. The occasional noises in the morning - garbage being collected, residents moving in, etc. These things are necessary and I understand that they probably can not be avoided.

With the exception of the Assistant Manager, resulting in the 2 stars, the staff are amazing and extremely helpful and friendly. The maintenance staff is responsive when they can are extremely communicative when explaining what they are doing.

Shirlington House has been a bright, beautiful place to live. The pool community is nice and it’s almost never crowded. The high ceilings in the apartment units and the fact you can’t hear your neighbors makes the space feel very private and huge. The neighbors are all very friendly and the staff has thought of everything to make living here as convenient as possible. They really do go above and beyond to make everyone’s living experience great here. The general store located inside the building has come in handy so many times. And the trash pickup service has made that chore much easier. Also the location to Shirlington Village is unbeatable.

Hate living here
General rule for renting apartment is to pay rent on time. And when moving out, leave it in decent condition. Opening the windows to breath fresh air should definitely be allowed. Happen to live right above the leasing office and I constantly see cute squirrels and birds running around. I love seeing them. So I went ahead and removed the window screen. WHAT IS SO WRONG WITH THAT? It's been nothing but DRAMA AFTER DRAMA with the Apartment Manager. After having poor communication repeatedly, Samantha first tells me that she will have maintenance guys put device on my window, so I cannot open it. Two of them came and installed this window locker. I WAS SO MAD! I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT!! I am paying $2000 each month and manager decides that I should be restricted in terms how much I can open the WINDOW...!!! I knew it was INSANE but I continued to cooperate because I wanted to keep positive relationships. Samantha doesn’t even know to appreciate that but insists on her point of view. That’s when you know dealing with this person will be very difficult and unpleasant. A week ago I come into my apartment and it says maintenance are performing critical service. And what do you know…? The manager told the maintenance guys to go inside my apartment without me knowing and to REINSTALL THE WINDOW LOCKS ON ALL OF MY 4 WINDOWS!! Was so surreal I thought I was dreaming. I work long hours Day shift and Night shift. Have 3 days off now and wanted to clean up my place nicely. What do you know. I look on my entire living room wall and guess what I saw? About 20 TINY WORMS ALL OVER. I was FREAKING OUT LIKE CRAZY and called Racheal, the Very Nice Professional Assistant Manager. She said that she understands why I'm freaking out and that PEST CONTROL people will arrive in am tomorrow. Then the maintenance manager comes to take pics of the worms. He was SO HAPPY IN TELLING ME THAT THEY ARE CATERPILLARS. Why is he so happy....?? The answer is because HE CAN NOW POINT THE FINGER AT ME SAYING THE CATERPILLARS ARE COMING FROM THE TREE BY ME OPENING THE WINDOW.....!!! HAS ANYBODY HEARD ANYTHING CRAZIER THAN THAT? I asked him DO YOU REALLY KNOW HOW CATERPILLARS LOOK LIKE...? In another words, how can you prove that? And YES I GOT UPSET WITH HIM. Then spoke with Racheal who said "Jenny, let's get the pest experts to come tomorrow to find out why this happened. And then we will try our best to resolve the situation." Can't say that made me happy but I appreciated her comment very much. Professional and how a REAL APARTMENT MANAGER SHOULD SPEAK LIKE. BUT NO NO NO from Samantha, the upper apartment manager. She sendS me an email pointing the finger at me buying every word the maintenance manager said. Samantha wrote in her email that THE SCREEN NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED. AND THAT IF DON'T ABIDE BY THAT RULE, THAT SHE WILL BE FORCED TO PERMANENTLY LOCK MY WINDOW SCREEN. PLUS INSTALL LOCKS ON MY WINDOW SO I CAN ONLY OPEN IT COUPLE INCHES. HAS ANYBODY EXPERIENCED SOMETHING LIKE THIS….?? SO SO READY TO MOVE OUT AND SUE THIS MANAGER FOR WHAT SHE DID TO ME. DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO MOVE IN HERE. The not well qualified or educated manager TREATED ME AS THOUH I'M IN SOME DETENTION OR PRISON. THE HELL WITH YOU...! THIS STORY CANNOT BE PUT POSITIVELY IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM.

Wouldn’t recommend living here unless you don’t mind moving out in a year when they raise your rent by 15% after your first year. Great community and the proximity to Shirlington is a huge bonus but not being able to afford your renewal could be a real concern since they seem to have no problem raising rent to unattainable levels.

Don’t waste your money
My time here was spent constantly working with management and maintenance to make my apartment livable. I had no less than 5 water leaks causing water damage to the laundry room and kitchen ceiling, then I had mold from all the leaks. I had 3 floods (they didn’t give me a dehumidifier until the last flood) so I had mold growing up the walls and mildew under the floorboards. The crow poop that they very rarely cleaned made the outdoors smell and you couldn’t use any of the furniture. I had a mildew outbreak from their ac unit which caused the humidity in my place to be 74% humidity in July. Mildew grew all over my furniture and clothing. The walls were wet to the touch. So many more things I could complain about. Them constantly saying you didn’t pay a fee or a fee wasn’t charged right just to have to prove to them you did pay it. Cars being improperly towed and them not caring, the crime in the building, package thefts. Despite all this I was possibly going to renew as I made so many friends in the building and didn’t want to leave them but they decided after all those issues they needed to raise my rent by $400 (23%) month. I will not pay over $2000 for a building with mice, roaches, crow poop, and mold. Found a much better place in the same area for the same amount they were trying to up my rent too.

I absolutely love living at Shirlington House. Everything is so convenient! The only thing missing are balconies but that’s something that can’t be fixed lol. All of my neighbors are friendly. It has been a wonderful experience living here.

Definitely the hidden gem of Shirlington. Convenient location, quiet, great for pets, nice amenities, several floor plans to choose from. Walking distance to grocery store, library, theatres, and restaurants, along with fantastic public transportation.

The apartment complex is pretty good, with a great location. The largest issue is how packages are secured. There is a locker system which works well for small packages, however oversized packages are either left in a locker room, or now, out in the open for anyone to take. I had a package taken, even though I arrived 30 minutes after notification of package delivery. The packages are in no way protected against theft which seems to be a major issue. There is no current resolution and little to no concern from the staff. If you can deal with making sure packages are delivered to you in person is a good place.

So far, living here has been good. A few cons like shower temperature, initial cockroach issues in my apartment (I had to buy a bunch of pest control items) and an odd smell outside of the apartment. Aside from that, utilities included in the rent like gas and electricity is a huge plus. Due to the Studios not having the laundry in unit the laundry rooms are smaller and are mostly empty which is great as you don't have to wait for anyone. Convenient store is convenient but you pay for it in the price (a bit expensive). Unit have new appliances.

Maintenance and office staff are inefficient and unable to resolve issues for weeks. The problems have been going on for months and there is no end in sight for resolution. The slow response times are insanely frustrating when it truly limits your ability to live in your apartment.

Overall experience was fine. The AC has a bit trouble in living the apartment, the time I moved in winter the AC was spreading the cold air. However, the maintenance guy was super nice and fixed in same day. Also, in the May there isnt any cooling system which was hard to stay at home during the day and night. The walls are thin, my neighbor always plays a instrument in everyday especially in the afternoon around 8-9 it fells like his in my room and playing the instrument next to me. Overall the community is nice, the grill and pool area is clean and comfortable.

It will be nice if the neighbors with pets keep it quite during night time. Especially with those noisy pet toys. Every night's I woke up because of my neighbors taking their dog for a walk around 2 am or 3am. Also super noisy doors. People keep slamming their doors

The Shirlington House is old building but nicely done, not everywhere, but mostly the apartment is nice, with wood flooring, nice kitchen area. The main best thing about this building is the staff - the leasing office, the front desk and the maintenance team are the sweetest people. Always responsive and helpful.

I really enjoy the location for the price. As a first time single renter, I feel safe and have everything I need within the building or close by. I love having a gym in the apartment and a small store for items such as groceries or toilet paper rather than taking a trip to the grocery store. It is very convenient.

I really dont like the assistant manager (-------). Shes kind of greedy and selfish. When the other staff saw me carrying a large package, he offered to help. ------- scolded him and tell him not to help me. I asked to borrow a roller, she told me that they no longer lent it out. So ok, I had to carry the huge package all by myself to 10th floor. When ------- saw that I had another huge delivered package in the storage room, she asked if she could take it. Since I no longer needed the item and seller didnt come to pick it up. I told ------- that she could take it for free. So she did without hesitation. When I had issues with excessive heat in my unit, I emailed and called many times for help, neither ------- nor the property manager could offer an appropriate solution. I had to figure it out on my own. In times, I have learned that the property management of this apartment kinda sucked. Those two women (------- and her manager) couldnt care less about me as a renter. So I wouldnt even bother calling them anymore. Then, the worst part came when it was time for my lease renewal. ------- sent me a reminder letter and new lease offers for significantly increasing rates. Last year, she didnt renew my lease but had me sign an entire new lease agreement with increased rent. It was in the middle of pandemic so I didnt question and sign right the way. This year, ------- did exactly the same thing, but with larger increases on lease options. I got upset and notified the leasing office. The property/community manager asked me why. After explaining the reasons, she offered alternatives for my lease renewal. -------, on the other hand, ignored our email conversation and kept sending me the letter, both in email and printed, to vacant my unit. That made me feel like she wanted to move me out ASAP. Other than my unpleasant experiences with ------- (assistant manager), other staffs are friendly and helpful. I had to give bad rating on staffs because of that awful woman. I dont understand why they could hire someone like that to manage the property. I would have given ------- a negative, minus 10 rating if I could.

The proximity to shops, restaurants, super market, and movie theaters makes this a great community to live in. The location in reference to the highway as well as to DC makes this apartment building ideal.
