My experience was excellent!! April 2005 to June 2007 #5213
The only reason that I moved out was to help my brother and nephew, otherwise, I wouldn't moved out. My apartment was clean and quiet, not like the other one in Riverwind where my neighbors were loud. Here I found peace and quiet even though friends, had told me the area wasn't the best. My rent was a great deal, the trees surrounding the property reminded me of nature. I really enjoyed living at Brook Pines and I would go back. Occasionally, I had a roach, but what home doesn't? The appliances where in very good condition, the pantry - a plus for me. Extra storage space. For 1 person, my former apartment 5213, was wonderful. Maybe when those others that have written before stayed there, it was in other years. Being from a big city, I'm used to hearing sirens occasionally, so that didn't bother me at all. I recommend this apartment complex to anyone who is trying to save money and wants a good value. Being close to I20 and I26, with shopping within 10min was also a great plus.

I had the "pleasure" to stay at this putrid hell hole for almost one year. The manager completely misrepresented the place. She said its a diverse community and she talked about all the amenities. But she didn't mention being woken up in the middle of the night to the sound of gunfire. The grounds progressively got dirtier and dirtier. If you complained they simply ignored you or talked down to you. The washing machine was broken for months and they refused to fix it even after I complained several times. There were cigarette butts and chicken bones thrown all over the premises. The swimming pool was a cesspool. The management is possibly the worst I've ever had to deal with. They let the place go to hell and then had the audacity to send me a note blaming me for their filth. They will make everything as difficult as possible for you then give you an attitude when you want to leave. Then the residents... My neighbor played loud, obnoxious music as loud as possible all hours of the day and the night. In a normal residence you could complain to the individual but here you may get gunned down for such a request. You could tell that there was a great deal of drug dealing going on in this place and periodically you can smell the smoke around the apartments. This place is not, let me repeat, NOT FOR A SINGLE FEMALE. The guys will scream at you if you walk by. You will constantly be harassed if you move into this place. Its extraordinarily dangerous. The apartments are spacious and they sweeten the deal with a balcony. But what you may not realize initially is that these balconies are death traps. The wood is basically rotting away. The one thing that is decent about this place is the rent prices. However, you are pretty much playing Russian Roulette just to save a few dollars. Stay away!!! Don't be a victim of Brook Pines!!!!

You wouldn't want to live here
First of all, looking back at other reviews and a few responses, I've really noticed lbaileyfireball's responses. Kind of funny that there is an L. Bailey in the management office. Coincidence? Don't think so. They know this place is horrible, but don't want others to know that!

This place is a crap hole. I wish I had done more checking in to this apartment complex before I decided to move in. But, I was pressed for time and it was the cheapest place I could find. I have had NUMEROUS problems with ants. I've had to have my apartment sprayed 5 times in 4 months for ants. And my apartment is clean!!! The last time, the freakin ants were all over in my closet, including my CLEAN clothes. It was disgusting. I had to wash everything again! And I was told that the ants are only going to "get worse when the weather gets warmer." Great!!

My neighbors suck. I've had to call the cops on them numerous times. I've had to sleep in my living room on multiple occasions because the walls are paper thin! Management doesn't seem to care, just as long as they get paid. Just take a look at the vehicles they drive!

DON'T LIVE HERE IF YOU'RE A SINGLE FEMALE!!! I have never felt safe being here by myself! Know what you're getting in to before you move!

very scary
If you are a female, you will not be able to go outside your apartment after dark and daytime is also questionable. I have to run straight to my apartment from the car and immediately lock the door. You cannot do your laundry, (the facilities don't work.)Also, unless you sell and or purchase illegal drugs there is no need to go to the pool. Lastly, if you see more than 1 police car at the complex stay inside and lock your doors because it probably means one of the prisoner's has escaped from the pre-release center behind the complex.

Not as bad as it sounds
I lived in this complex for three years. I understand the pros and cons and I also know that my experience was probably better than most.
First, it is the ------. I never felt unsafe but I could totally understand the people that did. There are a lot of shady characters here. Also, the maintainance guys were great but I took care of my stuff so I didn't have much problem. I got my full deposit back. The office staff lacked. They said they had mixers every month and in three years they had one!!
The pool is nice if you get there at the right time of day. My favorite BP story was the day my girlfriend and I were at the pool with at least 60 black people (yes, I'm white) and the office staff came around checking ID's. Everyone was asked to leave the pool area because almost none of them actually lived in the apartment complex!! There were 5 people left when they were done.
The police do patrol a lot which either means there's a reason or they have things under control. It had a reputation at one point for being a hub of gang activity but I did not see this. That's not to say that it didn't exist.
Parking could be horrible at times and our lot was cracking and falling apart.
Rent was cheap and my apartment was spacious. Cable sucked and the walls were thin. I made friends with one girl in the whole time I lived there which goes to show what the neighbors were like.
I lucked out and had a good experience but I'm assuming that you will not.

THESE APARTMENTS HAVE A HUGE ROACH PROBLEM. THEY CAN SPRAY YOUR APARTMENT BUT THEY'LL BE RIGHT BACK IN LESS THAN A MONTH. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ROACHES THAT ARE SO BIG EVER IN MY LIFE. I MEAN HUGE THE ONES THAT FLY TOO. LATELY THE MANAGEMENT TEAM HAS CALLED THEMSELEVES FIXING THE BUILDING UP, BUT GET THIS THEY HAVE REPLACED THE WOOD ON THE OUTSIDE BUILDING BUT THEY HAVE NEVER PAINTED IT. IT LOOKS SO TACKY. THE LAUNDRAMATS ARE A JOKE. OUT OF 4 WASHERS FOR FOUR BUILDINGS ONLY TWO OF THEM WORK. OUT OF 4 DRYERS ONLY TWO OF THEM WORK. IT'S 1.25 TO DRY YOUR CLOTHES FOR 45 MINUTES, BUT WHEN THE 45 MINUTES IS UP MOST OF THE CLOTHES ARE STILL WET. I HAD CONTACTED MANAGEMENT ABOUT BUILDING 11 LAUDRAMATS WASHING MACHINES BEING BROKE ABOUT 4 WEEKS AGO AND I WENT BACK THIS WEEKEND AND THE ---- IS STILL BROKEN EVEN AFTER THEY PROMISED TO FIX IT. ------- LIARS. MANAGEMENT DOESNT GIVE A ----. THE APARTMENT BUILDINGS NEED TO BE PAINTED BADLY. IT MAKES NO SENSE FOR THEM TO MAKE ALL OF THE MONEY THEY MAKE, BUT THE BUILDING LOOK LIKE THIS. THE RENT IS CHEAP BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT THE MONEY YOU SPEND GOING TO THE LAUNDRAMAT MAKES UP THE DIFFERENCE. THE LAUDRAMATS ARE NOT SAFE IT'S LIKE A DEATH TRAP ONE WAY IN AND ONE WAY OUT. I CANT WAIT TO GET OUT OF THIS PLACE. I WOULDNT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. WHEN I MOVE IM MOVING TO THE PAVILLION WHICH IS MUCH MUCH BETTER. MORE EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH IT!

Gang-affiliates, Criminals, and Drug Lords Welcome!
This place shouldn't even exist it's so crappy. The folks under the national poverty line would be ashamed to live here. Management is almost non-existent except for the friendly shoe out the door when there is a problem. As for the maintenance crew, well, YOU are the maintenance crew when it comes to their “high-end†appliances inside and their over-priced and defective washers and dryers in the so called “laundry facilityâ€, to which I was given a key (if lost $10), but the knob was broken, defeating the whole purpose. If that’s bad enough, there is, apparently, a large amount of homeless BUGS in the area that really need roommates. Let's not forget the REALLY out-of-date cable system that only THEY provide (it’s like 20 channels, 1st movie CHANNEL for extra $12) on ONE wall outlet, NO OTHER CHOICE except satellite? To add even more icing to the cake, their security situation is a constant reminder of how UN-SECURE you really are. The local police are forced to constantly monitor, patrol, and camp out in the parking lot because it is a COMMON HOTSPOT for SKETCHY ACTIVITIES. Oh and the 1st floor bedroom windows have NO LOCKS! Take my advice and STAY AWAY from this place!!! Don’t get distracted by the low rent. You’d be better off living in the SEWER or a TOXIC DUMP!!! -student

Stay Away!!!!!!
Please do not ever even come to Brook Pines to look you DO NOT WANT TO LIVE THERE. I couldn't wait to get out of the hell hole! The management sucks and so does the maintenance. The ------ deal drugs and smoke pot in the parking lot and the whole area is nasty. If you are a single female RUN as fast as you can!!!!! Eat up with roaches and trash is thrown everywhere but the trash cans.

PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW!!
Im a Cincinatti native and had a year lease in this hell-hole. After my 8 hour drive to columbia with all of my stuff, my apartment was not even ready! There was beer cans and condoms all over the place from where teens had broken in and partied! Management did not even help me clean it. my first apartment was in such bad condition I had to move into another one. and they charged me $650 for the piece of crap that was previously all screwed up! My car was burgarized twice, somesone tried to break into my slididng glass door at 4:00 a.m. The mamnagemnet is rude. The tenants are ------. Brook Pines is a great place to live if you like to fight, steal, or deal drugs! Please do not make the same mistake I did. Run run run run run and never look back!
Former Resident

NOT A PLACE FOR A SINGLE FEMALE
THIS IS NOT I REPEAT NOT A PLACE FOR A SINGLE FEMALE. I'M ACTUALLY SCARED TO COME IN MY OWN APARTMENT AT NIGHT. GUYS ARE ALWAYS LOUD AND HARRASSING YOU. NEIGHBOORS ARE SUPER SUPER ------ AND PLAY REALLY LOUD MUSIC. WE HAVE A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH ROACHES. PEOPLE THROW TRASH ON THE GROUND INSTEAD OF THE TRASH CAN. DONT LET THEM PLACE YOU IN THE BACK IT'S ESPECIALLY ------. THERES NEVER ANY PARKING AVALIABLE. YOU WOULD THINK PEOPLE WOULD MAKE THERE COMPANY PARK ACROSS THE STREET. IT'S ALSO SUPER DARK AT NIGHT. THE WALLS ARE SUPER THIN YOU HEAR EVEYTHING THE NEIGHBOORS ARE DOING INCLUDING WHEN THEY HAVE SEX. THE ONLY GOOD THINGS ARE THE RENT IS REALLY CHEAP FOR THE ST. ANDREWS AREA (BUT KEEP IN MIND THE COMPLEX LACKS SAFETY), THE APARTMENTS ARE SPACIOUS AND THE REPAIR MAN IS ALWAYS QUICK WITH REPAIRS. BUT EVEN WITH THOSE POSITIVES I STILL WOULDNT RECOMMEND BROOK PINES TO ANYONE ESPECIALLY A SINGLE FEMALE.

good deal
I lived at BP for many years. It is the best deal in Columbia if you have the patience for Broad River Road. It's larger than most and has inside storage, a huge walkin closet, decent fridge and stove and a laundry room in each building. My utility bill was also very low. You have to ask them to spray for bugs; I used traps and was fine.
The neighbors can be as annoying as anywhere else, you just work with them. My view was nice in that there are a lot of trees. It can be a little noisy, but so is my new apartment-and the one before that. And they don't do Section 8. As far as what you get for the price, it's the best I've seen. They don't rip you off like a lot of other places. I miss that extra money.
The maintenance will fix your problems and in a timely manner. The main guy has been there a long time and is very helpful and friendly. The management actually gave me back my full deposit and all my pro rate with no fuss. I was really impressed.

Run away
I have never wanted out of a place so bad in my whole life. There are ants everywhere. I left my car window cracked one day and I had to get ant traps to get them out of it. My a/c has broken 3 times and I've only lived here for 1.5 months. They only offer cable thru them which is nice and cheap but you don't even get the WB. Not very impressed in the process of finding a new place

affordable and OK
First things first: Unlike many nearby complexes, this apartment has not started accepting Section 8 vouchers, so it is still fairly decent.
The management company knows this complex is in a "borderline" area of Columbia, so they are doing everything they can to keep it safe and to keep out welfare clientele.
The office staff are fairly responsive and the maintenance is good. But they are no-nonsense about a lot of stuff, which is probably a good thing (see above).
Overall, I had a good experience at this apartment. The price can't be beat.
However, if I were moving to Columbia again, I would try to find something closer to downtown, as the commute can be aggravating.

Aweful
The place is full of bugs by the door steps. The neighbors are loud & no assigned parking spaces in the parking lots. Someone opened a door on my brand new vehicle twice in a week´s time. Maintenance crew is horrible. It took them four tries to fix my air conditioning, which is not fixed completely. It keeps going out when the air conditioning is needed the most. If you are a single, white female it´s not a place for you.

Horrible
This place sucked. The walls are made of cardboard and it didn´t feel very safe. The apartment next door sounded like it was a crack house! For what you pay, you don´t get a lot

Great until...
I was a tenant of Brook Pines for one year. Besides the ant problem it was a great place to live with friendly staff. I would have recommended Brook Pines to anyone until I received my security deposit refund.
I was charged $155 dollars for having "scratches on a kitchen counter top". First, there are knives in kitchens along with food to be cut, so forgive me for "scratches". There was nothing wrong with that apartment when I left and I dont like to lose money. So if you live or want to live at Brook Pines please take all knives out of the kitchen.

Fine i guess
Brook Pines is like i said "Fine i guess". It´s a very diverse corwd of people. The walls are very thin. I live on the 3rd floor and can hear people next to me singing and underneath me i hear others televisions. I hate the old kitchen appliances and the ants. The high porch doesnot feel sturdy. I have seen people urinating in the bushes and beer cans all over. Outside in my court is pretty noisy. Although overall it´s a nice place to sleep if you are rarely home

This place was the best!!!
I really enjoyed staying at Brook Pines and would have stayed longer had my company not relocated me. The staff was incredibly courteous, and the maintenance people were very friendly. My neighbors were nice, too. The apartments are very affordable, but i wish they would have let me put a washer and dryer in my apartment.
