Opinion from anyone leasing a 2BR town home

I plan on moving to Tysons Glen this month with my family into a 2BR town home. Can anyone curretnly occupying one comment on their living experience in one? I noticed most of the reviews seem to be for 1 or 2 BR apts.

    Ultimately, it's the Tyson's Corner area I don't like.

Living at the Devonshire Branch of the Tyson's Glen Apartments, nect to the George Marshall High School.

Ultimately, I find the area to be laden with traffic and although everything is very close (i.e.: shopping, office buildings etc.) the area itself makes biking and walking very difficult.

The complex is near the high school which is great if you want to run on the high school track, but very noisy during their sports season.
The maintenence team is great and in the past few years the managers have been getting more helpful and the staff more knowlegable, (in reference to comment 7...getting better)
Overall, I'd say it's not worth the price, but an okay short-term living space.

      Overall happy but &$*%&#$*$%&$*% PARKING

I am pretty happy with this place (Devonshire) but this morning they just wrongly towed my car. I just moved in and have been waiting for a parking sticker, which tye ran out of and are ordering more. I have a temp permit (which lasts another 2 weeks) but they didn't even bother looking for it and just towed my car anyway. I like the place, its simple and quiet, but MANAGEMENT NEEDS TO CONTRACT WITH A NEW TOWING COMPANY. I hope they read this, I know another person who got wrongly towed a month ago. Management has been helpful in helping me get my car back (though now I am going to sue the towing company for incorrectly towing my AWD vehicle and destroying the transmission). So in short

Tysons and Devonshire will be 300x better if they get a more professional towing company.

        3 BR TownHouse is Great

I've read the reviews for this community and I'm a little shocked at how many people think badly of it. I've lived here for nearly 3 years. We're pretty happy with the place, we've never seen a cockroach, but then we live in the townhouses, maybe the apts. are different in that respect. Management isn't the greatest but the maintenance men are really great (if they get the message from management). The place is a little old so we've had our share of problems with things like the closet doors being hard to maneuver or falling off, there was a little colored paint on the carpet when we moved in probably from the last residents, and the bathroom's decoration is a little 70's ish. But the townhouse is huge and in a nice area. We even have a small front yard. Parking is never a problem...but again, we live in a townhouse, not an apartment. An overnight guest had his car towed once, but most day guests without guest passes were fine, and the towing companies honor hand written notes by the residents themselves. I like it here. By the way, they give teacher discounts which is why our first two years there were so much less expensive than our last year.

          Living Hell

I promise any reviews on this site that are good are written by the management, as you can see. There apartments are infested with bugs, management is rude and they will nickle and dime you for everything possible on move out.

Although there were bad reviews I moved in for the location big big mistake. Its not worth any location convenience there could be. Do your self a favor and run run run.

The biggest problems....

-Bugs everywhere (roaches, silver fish, fly's ect.)
-rusting peeling paint on the balcony railing
-smells (they seep through the floors and walls and dont leave)
-management is abusive
-things like the sinks tubs routinely clog
-the air conditioning breaks in the middle of summer and it takes 2 calls for them to fix it.
-no sound proofing at all you will hear everything
-the types of people moving in when we left was scary!!!!

there are far to many other places in the area to settle for this place.

Frequent Management Changes (Good) - Don't rely on Old Reviews

I've lived at Tyson's for about three years and in that time they've gone through a number of different managers. They appear to have settled on a good one now though, he's been with Tyson's for nearly a year and says he has no intention of leaving. Former managers have left a lot to be desired, but Jason has been extremely accessible and easy to work with. Transferring from one apartment to another is very easy and doesn't require a secondary credit check (you do need your two most recent pay stubs). Karen Witherspoon is especially helpful. Rents go up minimally each year and I've been happy there with my two large dogs.

Tysons Glen & Devonshire Square rated superior in resident survey!

Each year, A.J. Dwoskin & Associates contracts with an independent research firm to randomly survey the residents at each of our apartment communities. I am thrilled to announce that in the 2005 survey, residents at Tysons Glen & Devonshire Square rated these two communities as superior. In fact, 90.5% of the residents surveyed stated they would recommend Tysons Glen & Devonshire Square to a friend.

I know this website can be a bulletin board for the handful of disgruntled residents who are few and far between. When reading this website, please consider that the best indicator of the professional management of an apartment community is the overall opinion of its residents. I think the superior rating from this year's annual resident survey speaks volumes about how satisfied the residents are at Tysons Glen & Devonshire Square. Thank you for taking the time to read this posting.

Julie Contos
Marketing Director, A.J. Dwoskin & Associates, Inc.
Peaceful..

I have lived here for about 2 1/2 yrs and am pleased that i can go month to month if i have to for moving unexpectedly. costs more but fair trade. Staff has always been really nice to me. Weight room is small with only two of each machine (like noah's ark) w/ cable tv to watch. away from noisy streets and highways so relatively quiet. noise from highway is buffered by trees and other apartment complexes. be careful of getting an apartment that is right by the high school though, bright lights from baseball field might keep u up at night. but that is if you are right next to the school, most of this place is away from it. landscaping is great, parking great, some maintenance probs but nothing to cry about. noisy neighbors but yu can always put in a complaint now and then. no scary hood stories or gangs or anything!! nice place to live.

                    Boy Was I Fooled!!!

I had previously written the review entitled Decent for the money but I was oh so wrong. The last six months have been all down hill.

First of all the neighbors here are rude as h*ll. I mean some of them actually will not speak to you even if you say hello. The office staff is equally rude particularly one woman and you will find out who quickly.

They will not work with you at all! They lost our rent check and instead of admitting to a mistake sent us an eviction notice.

They really do not have emergency maintenance they come when they want which could be days or weeks. The utility bills are outrageous here the electric bill for a small 2 bedroom is almost 200 a month.

What made us finally decide to move out is there are roaches. ROACHES!

The rent here has gone up almost 100 dollars in a year and trust me this is not worth it.

These apartments are dumps real crap. I read a lot of these reviews and figured I would have no problems and decided to move in anyway but it really was the worst decision I ever made. Do your self a favor believe these reviews and go some where else!

                        Devonshire A-O.K. :)

I live in Devonshire Tyson's Glen's other property down Rt.7. I see some people complaining but personally I think it is a just fine place to live.
The Pros:
- free shuttle to the metro
- swimming pools
- reasonably priced
- well maintained
- accept bigger dogs
- friendly office staff
- stoarge space
- realitivly quiet
The Cons:
- they said there was a playground when we moved in but it was gone
- most neighbors aren't too friendly, they keep to themselves
- you can hear you neighbors a bit but personaly I think that is just part of apartment living
- You can't walk to Tyson's and Rt. 7 can be a mess traffic wise
I know people complained about parking but I find that parking is pretty good here. They aren't too crazy with the tow trucks when you have visitors either. The fix things ASAP here too. I think that all in all these apartments are a great value and nice.

                            Decent for the Money

I am kind of surprised about the complaints, but its usually the ones that have bad experiences that -----. I moved in about 6 months ago and really have no MAJOR complaints. I mean this is an old complex and it is an apartment so can you really complain about noise and old fixtures?
I don't really hear people in their apartments I can hear them in the hallway when I am in the living room but that's it. I live in a two bedroom its a tiny kitchen no real work space and the bathroom is teeny tiny but again its cheap and an apartment.
I hear some residents couldn't keep from complaining about the shuttle being really late one day, even THOUGH if you call a cab the complex pays for it, so now we are stuck with the freakin vans again.
No real bugs to speak of. We get fruit flies in the summer if you don't do dishes every single day but oh well.
Parking can be a pain if you have a problem walking like more then 100 feet. I guess some folks are that lazy because worst comes to worst you park on George Marshal (which I have NEVER had to do) which isn't even a walk no matter where you live. You can buy a guest pass for $50 dollars, its worth it.
My complaints are as follows the water heater sucks you never know what the temperature coming out of the shower is going to be its like a game.
There is a new manager apparently rose couldn't cut it. Mike is really great remembered me after 6 months just mentioning my very common last name. The maintenance staff is kind of slow and they do not speak english but they smile and do their work.

                              Manages just to make money

The management of Tysons Glen apts threatened me for eviction or even not renewing my lease if I keep complaining about a neighbor who was harrassing me constantly. Their decision was that it is just fair to evict both tenants if they are causing fights. The reality is that this fellow tenant who has been renting this apartment unit for years and because of bad credit cannot purchase their own home, instigates it and stalks me day-in and day-out. I brought it to the management abd they told me that I have to show proof that I am being harassed, so I video taped this harrassment many times. But when I presented and showed the video footage of the many incidence, they never evicted the person but concluded that both of us will be evicted. if I make a complain again.
I think this is a morally wrong decision or rule. The instigator or the offender shd be punished and not affecting the victim. The offender or the person harrasing is now empowered to do further harrassment.
I have noticed that this apartment complex has not only kept shadowy tenants but is continually accepting "not good" neighbors.
They maybe getting the left-over applicants on the Mclean-Falls church community.

UNSAFE apartment complex...

                                Living in hell with demon's

Bang!! Bang!! This is all i hear in the middle of the night after 12:00 am. Can anyone sleep peacefully? My upstairs neighbor is human night owl living demons. They are awake the whole night i guess what they do for their living. They run move their furniture make loud noise they go to sleep around 2:30 am and keep me awake too. At last i have to call 911 and it take a cop to calm the devils. I can't be calling the 911 everyday. Lately the Tyson’s glen community is becoming a not so safe place to live. I saw someone car was smashed and the owner of the car did not know who could have possibly done that and for what reason ? I feel bad for him.
I approached my neighbor explained him; he thinks i am bugging him for nothing. Despite my complains, to property manger requesting my neighbor not to make noises in the middle of the night there seems be no change. This place is no good. All i learnt is stop complaining and leave Tyson's glen.
I surprised see some good comments about Tyson’s glen. Noise is a common problem in Tyson’s glen. Two reason's wooden floor with no sound proofing and the Management don't care attitude when you complain.
In spite of all this if you still decide to reside, be my guest. Welcome to the Tyson’s glen world of demons.

Good luck.

Not a bad place to live

Overall I've been happy with Tysons Glen. I live in a townhouse, so I don't have any problems with noisy neighbors. I think they finally did something about the bug problem that everyone else complained about. I've barely seen any bugs and I've lived here for a year.

We've had a few maintanence problems (the closet doors are always falling off the hinges), but they're usually taken care of promptly. The buildings are older so it's expected that things will break and need to be repaired. We haven't had any major problems with appliances, it looks like ours were replaced before we moved in.

The townhouses are pretty roomy, but the kitchens are a little small. There always seems to be plenty of parking, but you do need to be careful with visitors since they tow. The grill areas are nice, they just put in new picnic tables. I enjoy the pool, just wish the hours were longer. The fitness center is very small and equipment is limited.

The location is great! Less than a mile to 495 and 66. The metro is 5-10 minutes away. There is a school across the street with tennis and basketball courts.

The one complaint that I do have is about the shuttle service to the metro...it's unreliable. It seems like it either breaks down at least once a week or it doesn't show up at all. Now that they're using 15 passenger vans again some people are getting left behind because there's not enough room. If you plan to use the shuttle then you better have a backup plan just in case.

Your pets will like it. High School cuties within reach.

My roommate and I shared a 2 bedroom, 2nd floor unit and had our share of probs. The parking enforcers are a -----, and I had to head to the impound lot on more than one occasion (the last time happened during my last month at the apt, so I deducted the $ from the check and split!). The walls were thin and there is ZERO storage. Ancient buildings, washing machines built by hand in the 14th century, stinky pipes, and paper thin walls. I LOVED waking up to my neighbor urinating! We had a couple of roaches, but after a couple of exterminator visits we never saw them again.

There is a high school next door so there is a track, tennis courts, and b-ball courts that I made use of. Very handy. Plus, lots of 18 year old cuties to invite over for weekend prayer meetings! *wink*

As far as commutes go, it is about 1/3 mile from 495. Any other place you are going to have to get there via Leesburg Pike.

The dog loved to run out back by the woods. If you are lucky enough to have a rear facing unit, you will have a nice view of the woods behind you and a minimum of noise. Essentially, you get what you pay for. These apartments sorta suck monkey-butt, but for around $1000 a month, you aint gonna get Trump Towers. I would advise trying some other place that wasn't built by the Pilgrims.

All my appliances are new, I haven't seen very many bugs and most of my maintenance requests have been quickly addressed.

The bathroom and kitchen are small, but the bedroom and living room in my ground level garden apartment are quite large. Parking is only a problem when a major snow storm hits (rarely) and snow occupies spaces. If you don't have a pass for your guest they will get towed - a lesson I learned quickly.

The Metro shuttle used to be a cramped van, now it's a large van that doesn't always reliably follow the schedule, but management is switching shuttle companies this month.

The pool is open in the summer six days a week from noon til 8. Last year it was nice and quiet, but lots of people with kids must have moved in to the complex as there are tons of loud kids there now.

Since you're allowed to have cats and dogs, the community seems friendly because you always see people walking their pets.

A downside is you can't have packages delivered and have to have them shipped elsewhere or pick them up yourself at the post office. Leaving a bribe for the UPS man to leave a package works, too (he left the package, and the $5 I left for him).

Overall, I can't complain.

                                          Look elsewhere

We've lived here for a couple years and are looking to move elsewhere. Parking is decent, but if you forget to have your decal up for a second, plan on going to pick up your car from the impound lot. Noise is HORRIBLE, especially if you are in the apartments with hardwood floor. Be prepared to submit several noise violations a month, and get several in return. Grounds are decent, nothing special but not awful. I have always felt safe, except for one car a couple buildings down that keeps getting its windows smashed out. Construction in general is poor... You can tell the apartments were built a long time ago. We've had to deal with applicanes breaking down several times during the lease and leaks from the apartment above us, among other things. Maintenance does not seem to speak English, lies 99% of the time when they say they will be coming back, and do not really seem to know what they are doing. It's not worth the money they're charging.

A nice place, depending on your neighbors

I spent almost two years living in one of Tysons Glen's 652 sq. ft rambler units.

This apartment complex has many things going for it:

* Friendly staff - never had a problem with them.
* Location - It's on the door step of Tysons Corner, McLean, Falls Church, 495, and I-66.
* Free shuttle to the Metro station. It used to be a cramped van, but now I believe they lease a medium-sized bus.
* Decent floor space for the price.
* A nice swimming pool complete with life guards.
* An exercise room with trendmills, and a decent multi-use weight setup.

There are, however, factors that keep this place from rating above average.

* The ceilings are thin. If you live under someone, count on hearing them. This wasn't a problem until my last 4 months there, when a new neighbor moved in above me started throwing social gatherings and watching movies at 3:00 AM on weeknights.

* Cockroaches can be a problem. These are garden apartments, and if one of your neighbors is messy, you will be seeing cockroaches in the spring-summer-fall. The staff was pretty concientious with having exterminators show up, however I had to personally scout for eggs for a couple of weeks to prevent hatchings.

* My bathroom was small. No medicine cabinet or place to put a towel rack.

* No storage space. Your closets are all you have.

Overall, I felt I received good value for the money. I used some of the money I saved on rent to eventually buy the condo I am in now. And as someone who works in DC, I must have saved over $1,000 in Metro parking using the shuttle.

                                              mixed reviews

I have lived in Tyson´s Glen for a year now. There are many complaints and many things to love about the area. I do admit when Sarah left things went down hill for a while. But I really think Rose is working on improving- just taking her a while to catch up to what sarah already knew. We had Mike as our leasing guy. He´s wonderful. Our whole building loves him and even though we have no faith in anyone else in the leasing office we know that if we call mike the job will get done quickly. It´s not that the others won´t get it done, it´s just we know mike will get it done quickly.
I´m not so fond of the apartments in the build, I definitely prefer the townhouses.
The apartments have thin walls and floors and a lot of times it sounds as though the people living upstairs are going to fall on us. We had a bug problem after a few months. We are Very clean and dumb the trash daily and run the dishwasher daily so we weren´t sure where they were coming from. the exterminator said from with in the walls. and it took a while to get rid of them. Mainly due to the fact that he said we were going to have to call and get treatment done weekly to get rid of them. we have poor ventilation. I have the masterbedroom in a 3 bedroom apartment and in the summer it was burning up in there even though the rest of the house was cold or comfy, in the winter my room was freezing and the rest of the house was warm. I have friends in the complex and that doesnt seem to be a problem with the 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments just the 3 bedroom apartments. i have not run into a problem of being charged for things that i should. There are many pluses of the neighborhood that seem to not be mentioned.
I am resigning a lease but moving into a 3 bedroom townhouse instead. (the vents are on the floor upstairs instead of the ceiling which will be better for air circulation in the house) The dining rooms and living rooms of the town houses are really large. and even though the kitchen seems small it´s VERY long. they all have washers and dryers in them and dishwashers. the parking could be improved, in certain parts i have noticed that there isn´t enough parking but the closer to George C Marchal drive you get the more parking their is. The pool is cold for the most part but still wonderful to have, there is also a small work out room. (it is small but non the less it is a work out room!!), there is a shuttle that run to and from the metro station and if you by chance miss the last one there is a bus stop literally a block and a half away that my roommate would catch occassionally. (it´s only a 5 minute bus ride-if that) the shuttle runs morning and evening. it´s also good when you have family coming in and want to show them the city. and if you want to you can get a cab for $6. It´s not as expensive as people think!!
the bedrooms are large for the price of the apartment. and the masterbeddrom´s closet is big enough to fit a queen size bed in!! I have a small dog and he loves the area, there is lots of sun and shade so he gets to play. and they have a fenced in dog walk area that he absolutely loves because he can take off his leash and run around. and if your dog is well behaved there is a dog walk area that isn´t fenced in that you can take your dog off their leash and let them run around and about 3 miles away is a HUGE dog park that there are lots of dogs for your dog to play with if you want. My dog is really attached to a few of the dogs in our neighborhood and they are all pretty friendly if given the chance.
the neighbor hood is very friendly as well. Our whole apartment building is pretty close and do dinners together occassionally. there is a mix between young and middle age proffessionals in the neighboorhood. there is a redecorating fee instead of a security deposit.

When I moved to DC and into this apartment, the area was great, the apartment was nice, and the staff seemed helpful. As two years passed, I moved into their two bedroom apartment, began to run into a lot of problems. The biggest, the staff changed, the new property manager went from good to bad real fast. We had cockroach problems from the crazy neighbors next door, and the complex would not do much to help or correct the problem created by them. It gets better, once we moved out, we were then charged for painting. The paint swatched had been approved by email from the old property manager, but of course two years ago, we never saved it. The complex has taken a turn for the worse, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!

                                                  ----- in Disguise...

I was a resident of Devonshire Square apts from Januay 2003 to February 2004. Things started off good at first, then Sara the old apartment manager left and all hell broke loose. We had cockroaches in our apartment and everytime I called to complain about them the leasing office pretended like they didn´t know we had a problem (even though it was documented several times, and I was on a first name basis with the exterminators). They knew our apartment was super clean, and yet they tried to act like it was our fault. Things got so terrible that we inquired about breaking our lease and they said it was impossible, yet offered no solutions to fix our problems. We were also given approval to paint a few rooms in our apartment when we moved in and miraculously, when we moved out, they cannot find our records and are trying to send us to collections for "repainting fees"...hello - we paid a $300 redecorating fee when we moved in...apparently they forgot. I just think it´s pretty sad that they have lost so many tenants in this building and are trying to compensate for lost income by charging innocent tenants for ridiculous expenses...Run, Don´t walk away from this one...you will be sorry if you don´t!!!!!
